LADIES I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!

I have gotten into a pretty good regimine. I braid my hair at night and moisturize with coconut oil. Then I let them down in the morning. But I discovered that I am experiencing breakage:wallbash:! It has been a moderate amount, not a whole lot, but i want to get it under control, and QUICK! I tie my hair at night and cover it with a bonnet and I try to cowash 2x a week and deep condition 1x a month. What do you ladies suggest????

GRACIAS!

Where is it breaking? Is it around the areas were you tie your hair at night? Is it near the edges where the bonnet lays on your head? Have you changed up your pillow cases or your head wraps lately?

Just asking the obvious first. What are you doing now that you were NOT doing before the breakage?

I've been experiencing excessive shedding and breakage lately as well. Maybe you can increase the amount of times you dc.

I am glad you started this thread. I am having a breakage spell suddenly too.

Has anything changed that may have a domino effect on your hair? (Stress, new chemicals, diet, health, etc?)

The first thing I can think of that may be key is the weather. If nothing else has changed (diet, stress, care habits , etc) Maybe the cold weather is instumental in why this breakage is occuring.

Just in case, for the sake of damage control ,I am putting my hair up until it warms up and soaking it in coconut oil beacause it seems to give my hair strength and a thicker diameter.

Hth some!

wait, coconut oil dont moisturize....right?

Good question. I have read in a few threads that it doesn't . But it sure seems like it and the icing on the cake at least for me is that it seems to make my hair more sturdy when I comb it when it is wet. My hair is not nearly as fragile as it used to be since I started using it.

I have been wearing my hair out even with the ends unprotected lately. We have had single digit weather while I have been doing so.

Has anyone else that is getting breakage done this too?

I have to say that despite what everyone says about coconut oil being one of the few moisturisers to penetrate the hair shaft, for me, it just does not work. My hair is always dry and i feel the coconut oil especially just sits on my hair doing nothing but making it greasy.

I must say OP it may be the weather if you are doing nothing differently. I find that I must moisturize (I am talking about my whole body and hair) from the inside out during the colder months. Beakage can be combated in many ways. I moisturize regulary, take garlic pills, cholera (sp), I also regularly add garlic oil to my deep conditioner and DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

Hope this helps!

It's breaking near the ends, and I try to secure them as much as possible. I probably should increase my deep conditioning. And i'm natural so there aren't any chemical involved. Hopefully that tweak will work! Thanks ladies and I will keep you posted

Nothing to be honest, maybe because it's winter and I need to moisturize more...
Also can I retain length w/o protective styling? or should I just braid it up until the mini-crisis has been remedied?

Have you tried using water or a waterbased product ( spray or creamy leave in) on your hair before sealing with the oil? Could the breakage be related to dryness?

I too, was experiencing breakage, but from lack of care. I was sick for about a week and neglected my hair :nono:. No moisturizing the ends or sealing and I was too weak to wash/cowash and detangle. I am thus, getting a relaxer today after only a 10 week stretch :wallbash: and will try this again.

Co signing on the weather issue. You go from being in the harsh cold weather to your warm home (in my case hot!) it can really zap the moisture out of your hair. For this reason I'm really doing a lot of moisture DC's each week and oil rinses.

I do the same except I first use a water based moisturizer, then I seal with a butter or oil before braiding. I do not experience any breakage.

For moisturizer, I like Taliah Waajid's Protective Mist Bodifier, SheScentIt CoCo Creme Leave-In and Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1.
The Hawaiian Silky is pretty glycerin heavy (its the second ingredient), so if you try it out, don't use it in dry weather, or it'll make the situation far worse.

And I really like Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive Heavy Cream too...it's not exactly water based (water isn't the first ingredient) but it works very well. Something about it just makes me want to do some thangs to my hair.

Also, do you baggy at all or have you tried it? If your hair likes it, it can be a wonderful tool for infusing moisture deep into the hair. :yep:

Ok I put up a breakage thread a week ago and I DC with a moisture mask and it was a little better. Then a light went on in my head. I usually clarify once a month to every other month before a henna but I haven't henna'd in 3 months (wearing it straight too cold) and I have been using cones to straighten. I clarifyed and after the shampoo, no more breakage. I always forget to clarify. Then I have breakage. Then I remember. Try this on your next wash then a moisture DC you may see a considerable difference. esp if you have end breakage all over, it could be product build up

It's cold here, too, though not as cold here today as it has been. I've been ever diligent about keeping my ends protecting and just bunning. Tonight I attended a party and hated the fact that my hair wasn't down, but I'm determined to keep my hair protecting during these wintery, dry months. It is especially critical for me because my hair is so incredibly fine and prone to breakage.

I do believe that Coconut Oil does penetrate and is has a moisturizing effect. I would apply moisturizer, then seal with coconut oil.

The cold weather has a habit of breaking my ends...I Protective style, and keep extra moisture on those ends! Shea butter, castor oil, etc and increase my DC to once a week!

Increase your deep conditioning to once a week. And moisturize (ORS Olive Oil moisturizing lotion or creme) before you seal with Cocounut Oil.

My end weren't breaking but they wouldn't lie down. I realized I've been overmoisturizing them. Too much CO would definitely leave my ends soft...Do you you use enough protein?

I agree; coconut oil make my hair feel like straw.

I use products by qhemet biologics... I use the amla and olive heavy cream and the olive and honey hydrating balm to seal... works great...

You need to use a moisturizer first and then use coconut oil on top. Coconut oil does penetrate... but that doesn't mean that its a moisturizer LOL. Moisturizer... the key word there being MOIST... meaning water. Water and Oil are NOT the same thing.

You need to use a WATER BASED MOISTURIZER cream... THEN the oil on top.

Also, you might want to try using a protein treatment once a month.

I like the following water based moisturizers:
KBB(karens body beautifil) hair milk or nectar
afroveda shea amla, or curl define

with these products a little goes a long way :)
