Especially you ladies with popular blogs and fotkis!

Nik from beadsbraidsandbeyond at blogspot just recently found out that pictures of her four-year-old daughter were stolen and printed on flyers advertising a salon! And they don't even live in the same state.

Here is more info on the situation: http://beadsbraidsbeyond.blogspot.com/2010/01/stolen-pictures-of-my-daughter.html

So please take the time out to watermark your images to guard against theft. You never know who is looking at your images and what a simple google image search might turn up!

She should have called her lawyer. I would have OWNED the salon when I got done with her

Wow that is just unscrupulous. :nono: Some people have a lot of nerve.

Her daughter's hair is so pretty too. Beautiful braid designs!!

she can contact the salon and ask them to stop using her photo since she did not give them permission and if they refuse after verbal and written warning. Lawsuit!

I read this this morning when she made the post on Facebook. Ridiculous! And for the stylist and the graphic designer to catch attitudes with HER was out of this world. ITA with Almaz, I would have had me a salon on the East coast!

that's a shame. businesses need to learn bout royalty free photos.

that's a beautiful child. i've never seen this blog.

This is why I will never post pics of my offspring on the internet. :nono: Too many loonies and creepers out there. I often consider taking pics of myself off the web, what few there are (I have before).

She did but they were acting Extra with her Hanging up and getting nasty and whatnot. Cohen Cohen and Goldstein I have a problem

Yeah pretty jacked up story! I read it on her FB page and Blogspot. I advised her to call a lawyer as did many others. We also encouraged her to put the Salon on blast, and she did! Hopefully she will get a well deserved resolution soon.

People are getting way too comfortable with the internet and don't realize how easy it is to get access to a person's personal information. I'm sorry this happened and I hope she takes legal action against that salon.

Putting big fat text on your pictures with something like paint is pretty easy to do, too. A pretty good deterrent, though not as elegant. Kickin' it old skool...

I love her blog and hate that this has happened to her.

As someone who has had their pictures stolen a few times, watermarking can help but that doesn't always stop some people.

I also don't put pictures of my child on the internet, but I hate that someone who is trying to educate others on how to care for kids' hair has to go through this.

How do you watermark your photos? Can someone please break it down?

spain4risha created a thread in the off topic forum yesterday asking how to go about watermarking your pics on fotki:

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=434980

I played around on my fotki for a little while before I figured out how to do it. Here's what I said in my response to that thread, along with the link to the individual post:

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showpost.php?p=9859574&postcount=9

bumping....

Ok....thanks for this thread....I didn't know Fotki had come up so much! I THINK I figured it out...but not sure.

Go to the 'photo albums tab', then click on an album. From there, your folders display on the right. Click on a folder to open its contents. Then, underneath where it says 'comments, hits today, visitors today' there is another submenu that starts with a check box that says 'select'...followed by the other choices. Click on 'edit properties' to open up 'editing album properties.'

Then, scroll down to the link that says 'advanced properties.' A whole bunch of other settings will unroll. From there, click on 'photo frame style' and choose 'protected.' Then click 'save changes'. Then click on one of your albums to confirm the changes/see the watermark.

I think that's how you do it! It took me a few minutes to play around and figure it out (I like a challenge!) But if that's not really how you do it, then I'm sure somebody will come back in here and tell us how it's really done.

I did it to my pictures and I think I'm going to leave it.

**the watermark will not show up on the thumbnails, you have to actually click an individual picture to see it**

After you have changed your settings to put watermarks on your pics, you can't right click to save the pics. It will show up as 'photo protected' in the right-click menu.

side note: there is also a 'copyrights' frame option, and I imagine that when you select that option it will display your name in the corner. I haven't tried it to see for sure, but you can definitely try it out if you'd like. I like the other thing better with the watermark.

also, the message that gets displayed across your pictures is going to depend on what you have saved in your account settings. To do this, go to the top menu in your fotki where it says 'go to, my albums, etc.' and select 'go to' then select 'my account.' From there, scroll down to the 'albums' section where it says 'copyright holder'. Whatever you have typed there is what will be displayed on your pics. To change it or add something, click 'change' in the 'albums' section. Then scroll down to where it says 'copyright holder' and type something there or edit it to say what you want it to say. Then click 'save changes.'

She needs to contact a local attorney or even go to civil court. This is very sad but she needs to go through this process while it's fresh or even call back and record the phone call. And when she feels they are gonna hang up just tell them I am recording this phone call or something to this effect.

The person who told her about that flyers. Is there anyway they can send her the flyer or get a hold to one of them?

I do believe it was also discussed in that thread that you can only watermark your photos if you have a premium account, but I imagine you could also use one of the tools another member posted or google some free tools.

Conversely, if you don't use a different photo sharing site other than fotki you could also see if they have that feature and if not, you could watermark your own photos and then upload them to whatever websites you choose.

Thanks for that info (about the free watermark tool)! I think I am going to look into it for my photos on other social networking sites.

For ages now the thought has creeped me out about who could have my pictures and what they're doing with them. At least now we can all be smarter about safeguarding our photos now that we have the information to do so.

I am so sorry that happened to the lady of Beads, Braids & Beyond. Her daughter is so cute! People are so shady and unscrupulous...we all have to beware! Now I see why a lot of you hide your faces or blur them out somehow or only take pictures with your backs facing the camera.

I hope that salon suffers the consequences and learns a lesson from all of this.

How did you handle it when someone decided to steal your photos? Is this an ongoing issue for you? If so, how do you find out about it? I think its great that people alert the person it's happening to. I have read many threads about it or seen it in other fotki accounts. Maybe we can all stick together and look out for each other in that regard to right some of these internet wrongs.

I believe she has one, and she scanned it onto the blog.

IMO it was dumb to not pick up the phone after the FIRST phone call and dialing the numbers of a legal professional.

All the back and forth phone calls... so dumb. To me back and forth phone calls just show the other party that you are weak and dont know how to/cant help yourself.

The moment I realized the conversation was going nowhere the very NEXT words out of my mouth would have been, "...Please be advised, my legal representation will be in touch with you shortly".

End of conversation.

WOW.

You can watermark a photo in Photoshop before you upload it onto a site.

I don't have a premium account and followed your instructions and it worked.

I also discovered by way of google search, someone posted my dd's pics on another hair site, but stated she did not own the pics. That was nice, my dd's pics only show the back/side of her head, no facial shots. I know who the poster is, so I am not mad.

i agree with what most of you posted as well. i'm more litigious than most, so I'm kinda happy some of you agreed that they'd own a new salon & graphics design company when they were done.

asides from the theft of the pictures, it's false advertisement. She clearly didn't do ANY of the styles she's trying to sell. Who knows if this chick knows the ins and outs of hair care.
