hi ladies.. how do u all know when to do WHAT (ie protein treatment, clarify etc things of that nature)? do you actually write it out somewhere (which i think i may do ) or is it that you all have done your regimens so long u got it down to a science? Please give me some input cuz im tryin to start a regimen and having a 10mth old baby girl i tend to forget a lot of "mama" stuff tending to her lol

Thanx in advance

I actually put my hair regimen as appointments in my calendar on my phone. I have appointments set for:

1. Relaxers (every 16 weeks)
2. Clarify (every month)
3. Aphogee 2 step (1 week before relaxer)
4. Aphogee 2 minute (1 week after relaxer)

I also have a weekly hair journal and I write the products I used and how my hair felt.

I use to do that, but I found that I just listen to my hair week to week and give it what it needs when it needs it. :)

The calendar didn't work totally.

I only stick to the Deep protein right before my relaxer and won't break that. :)
I also Relax every 4 months
I wash weekly, deep condition 90% each weekend moisture &/or protein on needed basis
I am consistant
Clarify monthly now that I use sulfate free shampoo

thanx ladies, im still learning the whole limp hair=XX dry hair=XX thing. ive turned into a product junky after not having to buy much the whole 8yrs i had locs, but now that ive combed em out im on a whole other journey lol

I just know what day to do what. By I'm actually going to start writing everything out. I've already kind of started to. My friends on Facebook are so interested about my hair journey that they inquire almost everyday. I'm thinking about doing a blog just for them to follow.

I think it all comes down to what your hair tells you.

For me, I clarify my hair when I notice that it isn't accepting moisture well, if I see breakage at the ends,and/or if it feels waxy and gross. It usually comes out to be about once a month, but I don't purposefully schedule them that way, because IMO, clarifying should really only be done on an "as needed basis".

I do a protein treatment once a week (medium strength reconstructor) without fail, because my hair is relaxed and natural fine and fragile, so a little boost of strength is always needed. I let the condition of my hair dictate how long I leave it there. I was getting nape breakage, so I was leaving the reconstructor on for 45 minutes a week. The breakage stopped, so now I can start doing 20 minutes just to maintain the level of strength. But if it comes back, then it's back to 45 a week.

Everything else also gets done once a week...DC, porosity treatment, regular shampoo because that's what my hair seems to like. When it stops responding favorably to that, then I'll have to change some things around.

But in the end, if you just listen to your hair and do what it tells you when it tells you (or as soon as you can) then you should be okay. hth.

At this point in my hair journey I have it down to a science so me and my hair are one, but in the beginning I would alternate between my protein dcs and moisture based every other week. That method is so much easier if you can't tell what year hair needs at first. Usually in the winter your hair needs more moisture so that's a given, and just work it from there based on what your hair needs.

*tear, sniff* I love you gals...one day i'll have my Masters in LHCF lol, im still in my freshman level lol thanks again for the answers :)

i wish i did write it down. i guess i just kinda estimate when i need to do my next aphoghee treatment. as for everything else i just go by how my hair looks and feels.

HI newbie here..

I think I am going to start a hair journal. It seems overwhelming to get started on a hair journey so maybe me writing things down will help :)

I write it down in a journal. I just write the month and under that I write down the dates i do my washes and treatments.

I do everything "as needed" Hair feels dry? Time to DC!
Hair breaking more than "normal"? Time for protein!
Hair won't accept product? Time for shampoo (clarifying)
Hair not retaining length? Time to braid it up!

For the most part I have specific days that I do things each week (Sunday: wash/DC/rollerset, Wednesday: cowash & bun or twist). But I think it's a good idea to schedule big things like protein treatments and relaxers just so there's no guesswork. I might start doing that :yep:

Yes, this is what I do as well. I TRIED to have a rigid schedule for everything but then doing my hair started to feel less like a celebration of my inner diva :lachen: and more like a giant CHORE. Now I just look at it kinda like child-rearing. Kids look hungry? Bust out a snack while I prepare their meal. Kids look tired? They need to rest.

Yes...I keep a calendar.... I write everything down even what product I plan to use and the order I will use them in. However, I also listen to my hair if I have written down a certain date to do a protein treatment or retouch and my hair shows me that those dates will not work...end of discussion. My hair rules...

I've just started keeping track this year - i input whatever i put on/did to my hair in my phone's calendar.

After seeing this Guyanese female on Youtube - can't remember her name but her Youtube has been posted on here- I'm thinking about going back to the calendar method. Currently I get my hair rebraided every 30 days so when I take it down, I clarify & DC & do a protein treatment/DC. However, I've been doing the AO Glycogen Protein with my braids in every other week b/c I have a small spot where all of the chemical broke off down to the virgin hair. I need to keep up with those treatments b/c sometimes I forget what week I did what, if that makes sense.

ITA that listening to your hair is great, but when you are just starting, writing things in a calendar will help you get your regimen down! As a newbie, I know it's hard to listen to your hair when you don't speak its language yet. Plus all this HH stuff becomes overwhelming! So I write everything down and schedule treatments on my calendar. Once I get into a groove and really learn my hair (how it feels, what it's trying to tell me it needs, etc), I probably won't do treatments like clockwork.

I'm just learning what healthy hair feels like. Every month mine is thicker and healthier...something I've never had! HTH!

I write down everything I do in my ical calendar.
I try to be detailed. It helps if you ever want to go back to it because you won't remember every single detail.

i put it in my blackberry. so i know when the last time i dusted/trimmed was or the last time i did hard aphogee protein or the last real dc or other treatment. but i just listen to my hair for the most part.
