Edges/Ears v. Bunning: a possible solution

I want to bun (that is, in public) for a variety of reasons, but two things stop me:

1. I do not expose my ears, period.

2. My thin and thinning edges need absolutely no more stress on them than necessary, and even the loosest of buns and ponies pull the edges somewhat.

So, I'm thinking of a possible solution:

a. part the hair from ear to ear and comb that hair forward (as though preparing to put on a half wig). This front section will naturally include the hair connected to your edges/temples.

b. put all the rest of the hair (in the back) into a bun in whatever bunning method you prefer.

c. Now, return to that hair left out in the front. Put some sort of part (either middle or, as I prefer, side part) into it. Then, you can do whatever you want with this hair. I'm thinking you can do a few different things.

e.g. for pressed or relaxed hair--either curl the ends with an iron or put them on rollers the night before and let them frame your face (and semi-cover your ears!) almost like fat tendrils. No edges stress!!

e.g. for curly hair... wet this hair, detangle, and put whatever leave-in you need to allow your curly tendrils to reign down over your ears and frame your face. For example, you could put gel, or leave-in-conditioner, or brush with a 7- or 9-row Denman brush, etc. No edges stress!!

Any other ideas?

Thanks Ceebee3,! I figured that for me, edges are so much more of a problem than ends that the trade-off would be worth it. Also, the hair that comes out of my temples is much shorter (because of the tighter curl ) than the back, so the ends will still be well above my shoulders, at least for the foreseeable future.

Would it be too nosy to ask why you don't want to expose your ears? I can't think of many bun styles that would hide the ears

This sounds like a great solution. Roller setting the hair that is left out is a great protective style...but you have to do something to the hair in the front so frequently. There might be a marked difference in length from the front to the back. Hmmm...

I have a friend who does not like her ears exposed in any kind of hairstyle either and that's why she has never cut her hair and why she never wears it up - even when wearing it up would look great or when she needs to put it up when working out, etc. I'll share this with her.

Thanks so much for this idea!
