Ok..I am trying to stay calm. I found a new hair science website and just when I am deciding to wash/manipulate less I find out about these guys!

Apparently the older you get the more of them you have. They eat sebum, live and lay their eggs in the hair follicle, and apparently they can cause hair loss. BEWARE! VERY GROSS PICTURE BELOW!

Quote from website:
"Keep in mind, that harsh chemical laden shampoos can worsen the infestations, as they rob the scalp of its natural pH, and can upset the balance of the sebaceous glands causing an overproduction of sebum and prime breeding grounds for Demodex Folliculorum."

Oh my... that is disguting LOLOLOL Why did I even open your thread while I was having my bowl of oatmeal LOLOLL

I always thought is was interesting that so many things that were great for growth were actually anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, etc and I tell you what this is a great case for MN!

I feel like I need to henna, put coconut oil on my scalp, and use MN daily now. My skin is just crawling!

I think I might do the same thing.

Would these things be present on afro textured hair, which doesn't produce much sebum for them to feed on?

I think I have those in my hair right now. :perplexed There's this one spot on my head that itches like crazy and the hair falls out. But when I go natural, the spot stops itching and my hair is back to normal. It could be the relaxers, but now my mind wants to think it's the bugs. :look:

All I know is that they were discovered by the folks at Nioxin and not much research has been done about them. I will see if I can find more info...

That is gross beyond words.

I'll bet those things don't survive relaxers. :lachen:

J/K

I used to work with a guy who rescued cats in his spare time, and he would let the kittens cuddle up to his head when he went to sleep at night. His hair was pretty patchy, and I heard speculation that it was due to his contact with the animals :barf:

Oh boy...Next wash, Im def doing an ACV rinse to balance the pH in my scalp and diluting some tea tree oil and applying to my scalp.

That sounds more like ringworm which can be rampant in kittens and easily transmitted to humans. When it gets on hair/scalp it gets patches and falls out.

:cantlook:

eww my head itches soooo much right now

I wonder if those things can survive relaxers....probably not... :lachen:
My hair hardly survives them! :drunk:

I am so disturbed by this but I had to share with LHCF. I tried to warn you!

I found out that they weren't discovered by Nioxin, they were discovered in 1841, they are usually harmless, and it is virtually impossible to get rid of them. But, but, but! the more sebum, the more of these suckers you are likely to have so I will keep on washing once or twice a week and I started using a shampoo bar periodically but I think I will be using it once a week from now on. Plus no jojoba oil for me --- ever.

Imma kill with cleanliness!

AND THEIR products is the only thing that will get rid of this. Ummmmmm

Yeah right. I found out that the sites that claim these guys are responsible for baldness are just try to sell products.

Thanks for pointing that out. Off to edit my OP.
