How how often and for how long do you deep condition your hair with these? They both say 2-5 minutes :look:. I like to DC for around 30 minutes with heat and I only plan on using them the week before and directly after a chemical service. Does it really matter?

I use the 2 minute. I pretty much use it with heat as long as it takes my hair to soak it all up, about 20 mins.

I have the GVP K-Pak. I have used it two different ways:

1. Shampoo, divide hair into 4 sections, then apply K-Pak to the sections. Put a plastic cap on over it for 5 minutes, then rinse and deep condition as usual.

2. Mix K-Pak with ultra-moisturizing DC, divide hair into 4 sections, then apply mixture to dry hair. Deep condition for a while (depending on how much time I have), then rinse in the shower. Apply a detangling rinse-out conditioner while in the shower, do my other shower duties, then rinse again after about 5 minutes.

I'm leaning toward liking it the second way better. It helps with the moisture/protein balance.

Wow...the GVP k-pak sounds intense. That's the one I have. I remember using aphogee a long time ago (the old formulation) and it strengthened my hair, but my hair still felt moisturized. Does the GVP k-pak make your hair feel hard and crunchy if you don't use a moisturizing DC with it? I only plan on using it in conjunction with chemical services. Other than that I'll use a weaker protein treatment like Giovanni Nutrafix reconstructor.

I don't know how it would treat hair if not used with/followed by a moisturizing DC (I've never tried it). I remember a hair stylist telling me that I should always use a conditioner after a treatment, because treatments aren't meant to condition.

Also, I'm natural so our experiences might differ. I hope some of the relaxed ladies will chime in to help.

With Joico, it would be good to follow directions for the best results. I leave the K-Pak in for the recommended 5 minutes.

I've left it in for longer, about thirty minutes and was fine. It's not going to make your hair crunchy like the Aphogee 2 min, so you don't need to worry about that. Also I used in when I was transitioning (I'm natural now) so take that into consideration as well. HTH

Did you have to use a moisturizing deep conditioner afterward?

When I use the Aphoghee Reconstructor, I only use it for 2 to 5 minutes, covered w/ a plastic cap.

Since it's a protein so I always follow up w/ a moisturizing DC.

I do about 2 minutes normally and the wash after a relaxer I do 5-10 minutes depending on how my hair feels. But I don't use it with heat. I've used both and prefer Aphogee much better.

I use them both interchangeably every few weeks (I use a lighter protein in the interim). I apply to my hair, cover with a cap and process for 10 minutes. Rinse and apply conditioner for 15-20 minutes, or however long is needed. I used them both relaxed and natural this way, and it works well for me.

Thanking you once was not enough. This is the EXACT information I needed, as I am going to use K-Pak next week on my wash day as it is the one prior to my touch-up. Thank you SO much, this was VERY helpful.

You're very welcome. Glad I could help :D.

I found this website which offered reviews on Joico k-pak. I found this particular one very informative:

http://www0.epinions.com/review/Joico_K_Pak_Deep_Penetrating_Reconstructor/content_121098833540

i have been going back and forth on whether or not i should buy this product, now i'm sold. My ORS hair mayo is almost gone and i was looking for a simpler protein replacement, b/c i hate doing a protein DC then washing and following up with a moisturizing DC its too much for me. Thanks for the info

Hey ladies. Just wanted to offer a review on the GVP k-pak reconstructor (Actually called Generic Value Products Reconstructing Conditioner).

Short Story:
Pro's: Gets hair strong in very little time, pleasant smell, cone-free, ingredients are identical to Joico k-pak reconstructor, cheap price
Con's: Left my hair feeling a bit gunky, contains mineral oil
Overall Opinion: I'd use it again, but I would shampoo afterward.

Long Story:

I used the GVP version of Joico k-pak used it earlier this morning. I left it on for probably about 10 minutes (I was only going to leave it on for 5, but I got distracted, lol). Anyway, I think I like it. Everything that poster on the epinions website had to say about it is true. Made my hair feel strong in very little time. I followed up by deep conditioning with AOWC. The only qualm I have about it is that I believe it left my hair feeling kinda coated and sticky afterward (perhaps because of the mineral oil :perplexed?). In the future I will most likely shampoo after this treatment so I don't have to deal with the build-up.

*Muffin*,

Did you use a clarifying or chelating shampoo prior to doing the K-Pak? I wonder if that had anything to do with the stickiness? Maybe leaving it on that extra time?

I use the Aphogee 2-min. I apply it, then follow w/ a thin coat of avocado oil on each section. Then I sit under my heating cap for 15 minutes & follow up w/ KBB Deep Condish.

During the summer, I stopped following up w/ KBB Deep Condish b/c I didn't think it was necessary anymore. My hair started feeling rough-ish & I didn't like that, so I incorporated the KBB Deep Condish back into my routine.

Yeah, I did. I actually used it after relaxing. First I shampooed with the neutralizing shampoo, then I further neutralized with lemon juice and conditioner for about 10 minutes, then after that I shampoo'ed again. After that I applied the GVP k-pak, but I didn't shampoo after it and my hair felt grimy. But I still like the product. I read one person's blog and she says she uses the joico k-pak reconstructor as a prepoo and it works great for her.

REDKIN ANTI-SNAP IS PROTEIN?!?!? maybe i do have a protein over load going on?!?!? huh i dunno now!

From what the reviews on the site says, it seems to be. When I saw the word "anti-snap" I immediately thought of no breakage, and usually proteins reconstruct hair so as to stop breakage. Does it say on the bottle that it contains protein?

i'm not sure... *runs and checks* IT DOES!!! i need to read labels better! i think i'm using too much protein then. maybe i should lay off and up my moisture and see if that's what's been causing my breakage all along! i wondered why aphogee 2 step did wonders for every one else but my hair acted, felt, and broke exactly the same as before the treatment.

between my infusium 23, anti snap, and monthly 2 steps... i may be over doing it!!! duh me!

 :thud: Giiiiiiiirl, you know that is protein overKILL!

I use aphogee 2 min two ways as a pre-poo and as a DC, both ways I leave on for 30 min. I've realised that I need more than the recommended 5 minutes. I use this as a DC when my hair feels a little mushy, I don't follow up with a moisture con.
