defined 4a/4b curls tutorial

I'm trying this on my 5 yr old DD this afternoon. Just gotta run to Sally's to get EcoStyler. She's like "I don't want you doin' any more experiments on my hair".

Can't help it - this lady made it look sooo easy! I don't know about the 3 hours, though...I think I'll cornrow the front and then just do this from the crown back.
 
I've tried something like this but used a curl activator on a small section of my hair some time ago, you probably could get the same result with Kinky Curly Curling Custard
 
For the ladies who do this... Does the hair dry hard and stiff? Is it touchable ie not greasy or sticky?
 
I'm not interested in her technique, but can anyone identify that brush? I want to get it for my friend as a detangler. tIA

That kind of thing doesn't work for me :nono: That amount of manipulation actually takes my curl pattern out.

The less I actually do to my hair, the more it coils up :giggle:

I find it to be amazing though. So much variety in how our hair looks AND behaves :yep:

I have seen that brush at Sallys, Walmart and CVS.

I am not too sure about this. But I have a question, what is wrong with kinky hair?!?!?!

She made it seem that her hair without product was not good or acceptable. :ohwell:

Not too careful you can get a serious complex with some of these things.

Yeah, I did not like that either. Felt like she was scolding her hair. She used every negative adjective to describe kinky hair and used just the opposite to describe uniformed curly hair. I applaud her for being natural and to each her own but...:perplexed

Oh word? I couldn't hear the audio since I saw this in a noisy cafe and just wanted to see the style, thats too bad.
 
Something about her I just don't like. I know there was a post a while ago about how even natural women conformed to beauty standards by shingling. I didn't believe it then, but after seeing this video... I'm willing to bet she wishes she was a 3, no matter how "happy" she is with her hair atm.

I think it has more to do with her perception and characterization of her hair then it does with the act of shingling. RusticBeauty did a vid where she shingled her hair and she was raving about the way it defined her coils. Theres another proud sista I love on YouTube called AfricanExport who showed how she defined her hair with shingling. It depends on the woman.

Lawd knows I rock a different style every week, from kinky to curly to straight however I love and treasure the way my naked hair looks feels and behaves. I think shingling might be a great way to keep tangles and ssk's at bay as well. You just shouldn't be ragging on your own hair texture in favor of a style, maybe she's still going through her mental transition:yep:
 
I was annoyed by this statement: "You'll see how I turn this tough, kinky, kinky, thick hair into beautiful curls that get lots of compliments"

Neither you nor RusticBeauty call your natural hair (with no product): rough, thick (with neg connotation), kinky (with neg connotation), dry, coily (negatively), tough.

She had NOTHING good to say about her hair in that state. But once she put the gel in, it was "beautiful, shiny, glossy, healthy, curly" hair that "cooperates."

I didn't like that. It has nothing to do with shingling, so much as the results it gives her. Hell, I shingled just today and loved it, but 90% of the time I wear it in a WNG, without shingling, and my hair is just as beautiful.

WOW!:thud: its a good thing all I saw was the styling and wasn't able to hear what she was saying over the chatter in the cafe:perplexed yeesh......... thats just a mess:nono: I totally see what you're saying now.

I sincerely hope this is just the beginning of her mental transition.
 
Her hair was still wet in the results video. It wasnt finished drying. She did describe her unshingled hair as beautiful as well. In her comments she said she has had more growth and less knots with shingling. To each his/her own. This is like Teri's method with a moisturizer and gel and not conditioner only. Definitely seems time consuming.
 
Very cute, though the heavy product look is not a personal favorite for me. Still, if it was able to last her the whole week, I know I've spent that amount of time putting in some twists I was only going to wear for a week. It's a cool idea, too, first defining with all the gel and brushing and then grouping the smaller curls into bigger ones by doing a loose finger coil.

I don't think this method is for me, though. I can't even imagine what I'd have to do to my hair to get the comb and brush to slide through like that. I haven't seen a comb or brush slide through my hair like that in 7 years; it was the last time I got it professionally straightened.

I do want to see others' pics, though. :yep:
 
So I just finally watched it this time with the sound on:giggle: and I think she just didn't articulate herself properly, there were moments where I gave her the side eye because of the way she referred to her hair but toward the end she says "I'm so glad I made the decision to go natural it has been the best and I'm really enjoying my natural journey" you can tell that there definitely is a mental transition that is still underway but she means well imo:yep:
 
That is why I don't shingle, it takes TOO long because 4 a/b has smaller coils, and requires smaller sections. I get EXCELLENT results with Rusk Deep Brillance Shine Marine Conditioner(IT IS AMAZING). I would reccommend all 4a/bs try this conditioner on your hair.

This is why I don't sincerely "shingle". My version of shingling = more product than usual on smaller sections of hair. There is no way I am combing through every tiny coil on my head to make it uniform. :spinning:

Like another poster stated - when I try brushing or combing my wet hair it actually ruins the definition. After seeing this vid I would guess that my sections are too big.

ETA: Her hair does have some curl definition. When she separates the section to apply her water/products you can see a bit of it near the roots before she starts brushing. I think she could probably shake and go fairly easily and still get decent results but to each their own. *shrug*

Maybe this is more feasible for short hair, but just watching her do it was making my arms tired.
