kis is helping my retain length but keeping my hair in it's natural state is giving me tooooo many split ends and single strand knots. i never thought i would suffer from so many splits and knots. i'm fustrated, tired of them, and quite simply, don't want to see another. so back to 'ol school i go. i'm not aiming for bone straight, just straight enough to protective styling. am i the only one feeling like this? there's got to be better days.
i didn't loose hairs from the combs back then, well only when my mom would like ALWAYS burn me with that danm grease from the comb. don't worry, i will not buy grease, my scalp doesn't really like it. coconut oil will do. anyone else use the comb w/o heavey grease? any suggestions?

Have you tried rollersetting yet? You could use perm rods, flexi-rods, magnetic and/or mesh rollers to set your hair vs. straightening it so frequently.

This may be the solution for you. At present, your hair looks a bit too short for rollers, but you might press it until you get the length and then start roller setting.

You'll need some grease, IMHO. Coconut oil may not be enough, but I have no suggestions since I only blow dry my hair rarely and never self-press.

^^^I think she's gonna get one that plugs in w/ heat controls...at least I hope that's what she's gonna do.

i could buy some rods. i don't have any. i guess i'd have to get on amazon. lynnie, i'm just so tired of my hair. my hair is just so tightly curled together...okay kinky koiled together. and my back may be too hard for me. are there any flexi rods small enough for about an inch or two of hair?

Not sure of flexi's (probably are though) but definitely there are some teeny, tiny perm rods. I think they're white.

Ever seen a woman with a pixie get her hair done at the salon? They use this wide piece of cloth/fabric/? to wrap around the nape and behind the ears to hold the hair down so it can stay smooth while it dries? You can use that yourself. You'd probably get a nice wave pattern w/it on any hair that can't fit in rollers. Sally's I'm sure will carry it and probably most BSS.

All you'd have to experiment with is the products to set it with.

I feel your frustration, just hate to see you (possibly) damage your hair with so much pressing. :(

P.S.: The rods are really, really cheap so you wouldn't lose much if you don't like the result.

Are you gonna get an actual pressing comb, the one that you put on the stove? And use it by yourself?

yes a kizure a double press - prssing comb. don't worry jamaara i'm trained to do hair so i know how to use them. i'll have to buy another stove though since all my equipment is in storage.

btw, i do think rollers are way too big for my hair. maybe 4 mths but not w/ the bc.

There's nothing wrong with the old school stove and comb... that's what I use! I started practicing by using a lukewarm comb and "learned" how much heat to use. When in doubt, just let it cool more. There's nothing like a silky, safe and healthy press. I learned from Pinkskates' you tube vids and *fabulosity's* advice.

My stylist and I both do this and have been pressing since I started my transition. When my natural roots started getting thicker and growing out more, she started warmly pressing the roots only and curling the rest. Now that I'm about an inch from being completely natural, she presses the whole strand. I only get my hair done every two weeks - that means no water, poo, con or heat... and even comb for that matter touches it until the next wash, just daily moisturizer like a pomade butter or QB's Heavy Cream. When I can't make my appointments and do my own hair this is what I do use:

While wet, I put in a little leave-in and let it air dry about 80%. Then I put in a little heat protectant and Keracare creme press (while damp). I then blow dry. After that I put NOTHING else on my hair while I press... NOTHING and it comes out smooth, silky and shiny and with no breakage or burned smell. When I want to curl it, I put a little curling wax on each strand and curl because I wear spirals, but if I go straight, I add nothing.

Here's some small "flexi's":

One more option: Comb coils!!! No roller needed.

ooo thx lynnieb, i've never used the flexi's but they look pretty easy to use. i think i may try them and alternate with the hot comb.

forgot:

Great...as long as YOU know what to do w/ a stove model, A OK. ;) I sho don't! :lachen:

OP...however you choose to take it (rollers or comb) I think you'll have an easier time. Things might get easier when your hair gets a bit longer as far as tangles and knots go, but do what you need to for now. :)

hmm Keracare cream press-might have to try that

There's nothing like an old school pressing comb. Other tools just don't compare. As long as you know how to use it, which can be said for anything.

Though I am surprised you are having so much trouble with your hair at such a short length. Are you actually seeing splits? Like seeing strands that have been split in half? If so, I really doubt heat can fix that. Heat may help with the single strand knots, but it doesn't improve a split situation.

yes i am. they're at the ends and in the middle of my hair strands.

I don't know if it's been mention yet but Irresitable presses her hair and pretty successfully at that. Perhaps you can check that out.

And it has been suggested. I would try readjusting your regimen w/o heat before trying the3 pressing comb. First a good trim may be what's needed.

Have youi tried a trim? maybe you need to dust.
i did a dust 3 weeks ago. i don't really use heat/blow dryer. i just poo/co and air dry and wear a "so called" satin bonnet....i think i need a "real/100%" satin scarf/bonnet. i wear my bonnet just about everyday b/c i don't work or go any where. do you ladies think i should trim?

btw:fyi, i can't go to a bss because i live in saudi. i have to buy everything online.
so i've been looking for scarves and only been seeing those that goes around the neck or the square ones...which i have a hard time using. i've been looking for the long retangular ones.

eta: i need to scope out your fotki irresistable
