So I BC'd last week and had to go to work today. Too bad for me, National Geographic was filming my group today and so the hat had to come off:afropick:. It was like all hell broke loose in brooklyn. Comments ranged from :eek2: to "Love the new 'do" to "This is nice on you, but I like long hair on women".

What surprised me was it was my black female coworker who said to me "better watch it. You can only get so far in your career before being natural becomes an impediment. The twa is cool, but any longer might be an issue".

Oh well. I'll add the bc to my siggy in a few.

It's always other black people who think that natural hair is an impediment...the white folks in charge don't care as long as your hair isn't distracting.

Reminds me of the Living Single episode where the black guy told Kyle he had to cut his hair while all along the white bosses didn't care one iota and were much more worried about his work than his looks.

Now let's see that bc pic, I'm sure you looked amazing :yep:!

Sorry to hear you got such negative comments. There's a young lady (early 30's) I know who recently BC'd. She got showered with compliments and questions. I loved her look, but she does rock it with a lot of confidence.

Rock your new do...you never know how many women may actually be inspired by you.

YOu know we have brainwashed ourselves into thinking that natural hair is an impediment. The thing is, your coworker was probably being sincere. I know when I was graduating from grad school I consulted my advisor about getting braids. and the perception in the work place. She told me that the thin braids were fine but the thicker ones were a no no. I think it all has to do with confidence and upkeep...and that's with any hairdo

your hair in your siggy is gorgeous, so don't let their comments get to you!

now... :ahem:

let's see them BC pics!!!

I definitely didn't get the impression that she was trying to be mean. she seemed pretty straight with me. No snide looks or anything so I wasn't offended. just disappointed.

I'm sure she wasn't trying to be mean...that's just how she looks at the world. Don't let her reality affect yours.

And where are those bc pics?

It looks great!

So your siggy said you were transitioning for a year...did you cut some of the new growth as well just so you could enjoy a twa?

I guess she hasn't seen Ursula Burns, the CEO of Xerox and the first black woman to head a Fortune 500 company. She has a TWA.

Anyway......

Sorry you got those negative comments. Your hair looks great! Congrats on your BC!

The hair on both sides of my head didn't grow as much as the top and the back did, so when my SO cut it, it didn't look right (kind of like a mohawk). I had to get it evened out. A year of growth literally down the drain:ohwell: On a good note, I do like the twa very much.:yep:

You betta WERK your big chop!
Ha, never mind the comments. In about 5 months of your hair sprouting like weeds, don't be surprised if those same folk ask you if you have a weave :giggle:

Your hair is gorgeous! Congrats on the BC! I definitely think the world is changing as far as their fews about black women's hair, but I would not let the world's perception of black hair affect your own. Wear your hair with confidence in knowing that it's all you, so no one should have a problem with your hair.

Did you say to them WHO ASKED YOU!!!

Your hair looks great. I know your coworker was just trying to help when she said that, but don't let that stop you. I wear my hair in an afro puff everyday or in my fancy bun style with flowers. I get more complaiments from the white people at my job than the black people. So I don't think it will hinder your career, because I have a woman that works at my job that works in upper management in our sales department and she has beautiful locks that are almost bsl. So it did not hinder her career and she is actually dealing with our customers face to face.

Congratulations on your BC! Your hair looks beautiful. Please don't let the negative comments deter you.

It looks good! I had a ex-friend call me nappy head a few yrs ago..I just saw her over the weekend for the first time in about two yrs...now she's natural! People like to push their insecurities on you and wish they could rock their own natural hair.

First, I don't understand why people feel it's their right to comment on how a person looks - whether negative or positive. For the most part I don't because I know how it feels to not really want the attention (positive or otherwise )- at work! You are not a fashion model or actress are you - who's job it is to look a ceratin way? I don't get where people get off? And if you must make a comment, how could you - in any form or fashion - say something negative to a person's face about how they look. I think it's horribly rude and offensive and I would tell people just that. I'm not here for YOU to judge ME on how I look. I'm here to work.

But secondly, were they saying this because you were going to be seen on TV? Even more ridiculous. Have they not looked at commercials lately. Most women I see that are African Americans in commercials recently, have natural hair? People are so backwards and should keep their negative comments to themselves.

Congratulations on your BC.
I believe that there is a lot of ignorance in the world. It's a possibility that natural hair could keep me from advancing. But so could the name on my resume, or the fact that I graduated from a HBCU. :perplexed I believe that I have the power to make my own opportunity and if people don't want to give me a chance based on things that should not matter, it is their loss. I wear my hair to suit me, I like my name, and I proudly rep my HBCU (Florida A&M baby).

THE AUDACITY!!!

You know what it is? HATE.

You look fantastic, and you go ahead, and remember, that hairstyle is as professional as YOU MAKE IT!

Hmph...Look like A BOSS to me!:yep:
