Ladies that use Alma and Henna

In the case of a henna mix, I add none. Henna supposedly loosens the curl pattern over time (not to the extent of having anything like straight hair) and amla's supposed to reinforce the curl. I figure take the alledged benefits of one rather the the counterbalance of both! I will use amla oil on my dry hair/scalp as helps keep everything nice and black, but not in my henna mixes.

Stacy amla is supposed to do MANY things, both internally and externally...however in this case see above.

ok, well i'll try it out because i bought a small bottle of amla oil and amla shampoo and am itching to try it out. Thanks Sister.

Also when you use it with henna it darkens the color so if you're using henna to make your hair brown or black alma will help reinforce the color.

When I mix my NUPUR Henna, I add about 3 tablespoons of Dabur Amla Oil. Its supposed to help maintain the hair's dark colors. It smells great to me.

I picked this up on one of the indian websites about AMLA OIL:
"Amla Oil enriches hair growth and pigmentation. It prevents premature graying of hair, dandruff, increases the strength of hair follicles (and thus preventing hair-fall). Customarily, a small amount of Amla oil is applied to the hair after washing. This not only brings forth a rich, natural shine and soft texture to the hair, but also helps rejuvenate hairs that are dull and damaged. It also prevents split hair ends."

That's all I needed to read! LOL!! :yep: I got myself a few bottles. I currently henna 2x's per month, and I always add amla oil and some conditioner to my mix. Additionally, the oil helps my henna rinse out as smooth as butter.

Amla :lick: Love it. I use it for pre-pooing, sealing, mixing with all Ayurvedic powders, and sealing. It definitely darkens your hair. If you are not using Henna, the effects can be pretty dramatic. If you are using henna to color and Amla to oil, Amla will tone down the red.

I don't think I have ever mixed the two though because of the opposing properties. Amla is somewhat of an astringent. Anyway Amla is my all time favorite Ayurvedic tool - in powder or oil form.

Almost every vedic herb/oil for hair is about getting and keeping darkness. After all, dark hair is ideal in India. Just FYI.

How much alma do you add to your henna?

For now, this is how I use henna, amla and brahmi powders together for my henna mix.

Brahmi Hair Growth Pack

There are so many type of brahmi, but I am talking about the brahmi with botanical name Centella asiatica. This is the local herb found in watery fields. Brahmi is very useful in hair growth. It enhance the total hair health. It darkens hair and gives body to hair. By increasing the total hair health it helps avoid hair loss, hair thinning and dandruff. This has got medicinal value in Ayurveda. It is a known memory enhancer.

The powder of brahmi leaves are available in Ayurveda stores or online. By mixing brahmi powder with amla powder you can make brahmi hair growth pack at home.

ingredients:
brahmi powder - 5to 10 tsp.
amla powder - 3 tsp.
natural henna powder - 1 cup (I use the 100g pack)

Mix the ingredients by adding water and make a paste. Before applying this brahmi hair growth pack on hair apply some oil. Use coconut oil or olive oil according to your choice. Then apply the pack all over hair and scalp. Wait for half an hour. Natural henna powder may give a light brownish tint on hair. Wash it off with water. If you have more hair increase the quantity of ingredients.

Apply this brahmi hair growth pack once in a week.

I tweak the recipe by applying coconut oil to my clean hair and scalp. I add lemon juice and lavender floral water to the henna mixture. After the henna color is released, I add 2 tsp of indigo to achieve a dark brown color, I apply the mixture to my hair and let it stay on from 4 to 6 hours.

After co-washing with Ojon conditioner or some other conditioner, I deep condition with Hairveda’s Stirnillah or Shescentit.com’s Banana Brulee deep conditioners. No dryness….only soft, silky and strong hair with a beautiful color.

I’ve applied this mixture every 7 to 10 days since my 9/24/09 touch-up and I am pleased with the results. I had see-thru hair after I went through this excessive shedding phase. I started taking garlic pills and doing these henna treatments and have gotten the excessive shedding under control and my hair is thickening back up.
