Halalco has some (Sadaf brand...Iranian, legit). They are in Falls Chruch. Is that convenient? Halalco Supermarket, 155 Hillwood Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22046

Here's their website henna selection, so you see what they have. http://www.halalco.com/henna.html

Thanks! I live in Alexandria, so they should be easy to find.

Indigo is usually not sold at the store, short shelf life. You will probably have to order it online.

Hey gurl...how are you? I keep tons of powders around (I'm something of a self-herbalist) and indigo lasts fine if it's kept in a dark dry place. So does henna.

If you want to test the potency of the indigo, just put a little in some warm water and salt w/ a white plastic spoon or fork. Leave the utensil in the indigo. You'll see the (strong) color on the spoon/folk and know if it's good or not in about 10-15 mins.

LOL...Catherine Cartwright-Jones is simply trying to sell more henna/indigo y'all!

Good. I've always wanted to go to Halalco when I get to Va, but never made it.

They have huge turnover, you know this stuff not just sitting around. Muslims are addicted to henna/indigo . The prices on Jamilla and other good brands of henna are very hard to beat.

I've heard good things about the Sadaf brand on LHC..it's pure and dyes great so they say. It's only $4.50, so it's worth a try. Read my spoon test to see.

Where do you find it? In Chicago, Indian shops don't sell it only henna.

Look closely for the Zarqua brand. They call it black henna, but don't run away from it. It's pure indigo from Pakistan. Look in Middle Eastern/Mediterreanean/Persian/Iranian stores too. They are quite likely to have it. the word "zarqa" is Arabic for indigo. The Persian/Iranian store probably have Sadaf brand.

If there are Ethiopians or even Sephardic Jews (kosher stores) around, check there too.

I'm going to Halalco tomorrow. I'll let y'all know what I find.

I went to an Indian Market on Little River Turnpike and a lot of the hair products had expired.
