So I made great progress this past month and having the harsh winter coming up soon is scaring me a bit. My plan for this winter was to give my hair a rest and do a full weave. However, I am now wondering if this is the best choice since from what I have read they normally do not look like real hair. I do not want something that is going to look fake. My other option is to just increase my conditioning treatments and leave in conditioners. I might also increase the rate of BKT treatments since they are supposed to help the hair so much. So.. which would you?

I don't understand the logic. Having a weave does not mean that you don't have to care for your own hair. In fact, you have to make more effort to care for your hair under the weave otherwise you will end up with a nightmare when it's time to take that weave down. Don't jeopardise your progress!!

I guess my post was a little confusing. With the weave I would be using it to protect it from the harsh winter elements.

I know exactly what you're talking about. You have to still deep condition your own hair underneath the weave. You'll be sorry if you don't.
I have my hair in a full weave now but I make sure to take care of my hair underneath. I'm using Profective's Root Recovery System (Strength of Nature). There are 5 products in the system and they really are helping me restore my lost hair. I lost a lot of my hair when I tried to do an extensive relaxer stretch and I am battling other health issues that directly affect hair health.

Well, I love me some weaves. Love them. So of course I'm going to choose that. And full weaves don't have to look fake...though I don't wear them...I leave a little bit out in front (horseshoe).

But, I am lazy with weaves because if my hair is put away I don't have to do too much upkeep. If your hair needs a lot of attention you probably should just leave it out. Or wear wigs so you can get to your hair easily.

MSA, do you what type of weave hair do you use? And if you wear straight weave, how do you moisturize your hair underneath without getting the weaved hair wet??? TIA

I always try to wear weave that is kinky straight...I was really interested in some kinky curly weaves for a while but they seem like too much maintenance for me. I only like to wear hair that I can get wet and treat the same way I treat my own.

So right now I'm planning to get more kinky straight weave. I just wet it when I wash my hair, braid it up, and then wear it in a braidout til the next wash.

If you just want to moisturize your hair then use an applicator bottle (the ones with the tips, like a coloring bottle) and dilute your moisturizer, put it in there, and put it on that way. Or use a spray moisturizer. Also, things that are creamy/buttery are usually fine for my hair. The buildup keeps my hair moisturized lol.

I voted more conditioning. A sista is going to be wigging it up this winter! Stylish, protected, AND warm! Can't beat that!

Thats the exact reason why I dont wear kinky curly weave.....way too much manipuation to get my hair to blend. I know my avi pic is small but that hair was kinky curly and cost way too much money but I took it out cause I was tired of trying to make my hair do something thats not natural for it to do. I only lost cost of the hair cause my mother puts my weaves in. I never thought of kinky straight hair, can you post a pic of it???? I think I'll try the applicator bottle, thanks. My hair grows really fast so if I take care of it, it will be even better.

MSA, what brand of kinky straight do you use? My braid outs dont last so I need a different type of hair.

This may be a dumb question, but I've never worn a weave, lol. How long does your hair have to be to get an install? My hair is about 2 3/4 inches long now (TWA). Do they braid really tight or something before they sew the weave in? I have no clue how to take care of it either, but I wanted to see if it's even an OPTION first. I kinda don't want to have to wear a wig ._.

I'm going for a full weave...and no, they definitely don't have to look fake. My last one looked great, although the closure left something to be desired, but now I know better.

Check out the weaves/extensions forum on BHM for pictures, FAQ, hair brands, and pictures of installs to inspire you.

The tightness depends on your braider. If your hair is long enough to braid then you can get hair sewn on.
