Hi
When i was a child i remember that my cousin made her natural Coconut Oil, i kind of need coconut oil for a recipe, but i don't remember how to do it. Do any of you does?

Than you very much!

Hey Taina! Why don't you just buy coconut oil? You can probably buy a coconut but why do all that work when you can just buy the oil?

Question for you, I remember my mom buying aceite de ligereta to make the hair grow. What do you call that oil in English? I have no idea.

By the way, I take olive oil and coconut oil (I don't measure but its probably 1/4 cup of each) and put it in the microwave for 5 seconds. I apply it to my hair in sections and leave a cap on for 1 hour. I rinse it out and apply conditioner, detangle and style. Its a great hot oil treatment.

Thanks for the answer
I bought coconut oil but, it does not seems like "natural" maybe it have lots of additives and i did'nt like it. I can try going to a diferent store but i rather find how to make it natural.

And i don't know how can we translate the Aceite de Igereta, but i also remember that one.

Taina if it has additives then don't bother with it. I have been to the Dominican BSS near me and they sell coconut oil. It just didn't "look" right so I read the ingredients and it had mineral oil LOL I put it right back!

I found this e-how article about how to make coconut oil.
I hope it works for you.

OMG those directions made my mouth water! I think I'd end up making 1 oz of coconut oil because I'd end up eating the damn coconut LOL

This is what i was looking for. Thanks i will try this tomorrow., I'll show ya my results

If you decide to buy it going forward but want the real deal buy Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from a vitamin shop. Smells like coconuts and it's 100% coconut oil.

Here's a link at Vitacost.com. It's actually the one I used to use to cook with but now I prefer it on my hair :look:  http://www.vitacost.com/Nutiva-Extra-Virgin-Certified-Organic-Coconut-Oil

The one I cook with now is expeller pressed coconut oil, which is odorless but has none of the transfats as the fakey coconut oils they sell in the grocery store oil aisle.

You can also go to http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/ and they have all natural coconut products from every part of the coconut; Extra virgin coconut oil, Coconut Cream Concentrate, Organic Coconut Flour and more.

Of course if you're looking for somewhere local, they sell Nutiva and other brands of EVCO at Vitamin Shoppe and health food stores. Expect to pay more at health food stores.

I have to get the recipe from my father but my Puerto Rican grandmother used to make coconut oil for my hair when I was little. I'm dont know the whole process but I remember getting in trouble for opening the fridge when they were making the oil because the coconut had to "set". I'll probably see my dad today and i'll try force the recipe out of him.

Ladies, how do you open the actual coconut?

Back in the Dominican Republic I'd have someone open it with a machete. I don't have one and even if I did I'd be scared to chop off my foot LOL Anybody have a recommendation on how to open the coconut?

There is an actually tool you have to use. I need to look in my natural eating book because she explains. But yeah, there is something that can pry it open for you.

I haven't finished reading the thread, but I'm impatient. Just wanted to add that my coconut oil is from the grocery store, and is 100% pure and organic. Its also odorless. I think I may try to make my own just to see the difference. Otherwise this works wonderfully. Its just about reading the label if you decide to purchase IMO.

ETA: I almost forgot the opening bit. You can use something like a hand drill, or even a corkscrew to put a hole in an eye of the coconut and allow it to drain over a glass. Then wrap it in a towel and give it a whack with a hammer. You avoid shrapnel this way. Smell or taste a bit of the milk to taste its freshness- it should be sweet.

The guy that sells the coconuts here have the machete, so i'm not in big troubble. But i remember in my grandma house we had a coconut plant and after putting away all the bark we just throwed the coconuts in a nig rock in the yars. We couldn't take the agua de coco tho :S
