I only go to the salon for touch-ups. I plan to stretch no less than 9 weeks each time. If I had family or trusted friends here in L.A., I'd be fine. But, I don't as they are all in Philly. So, I have no choice but to rely on a stylist to re-touch me. Otherwise, everything else is me.

i don't know how anyone on this site can stand the salon. after learning all the right ways to do things, i'm too finicky. wash it like this, comb it like this, dry it like this...etc.

When I was living in nyc I would go to the salons for wash and sets. but in jersey the places I went to don't know what they are doing so i'd rather stay the pj diyer,

but normally i'm both diyer and salon goer depending on where I live.

i have to say im more of a DIYer. I like going to salons but it is just too much right now and i cant afford it even though i would love to bcuz i cant get the salon look tht i get at home sometimes, but im trying to practice so i can get it. I want to mostly want to go to salons to get trims anad thats it.

I'm a hybrid.. I do my hair 2 weeks a month and I go to the salon the other two weeks... Sometimes I just want it to look .. "professional" and yes that gap is slowly closing between what I consider "professional" and what my homemade do's look like. Plus sometimes I get tired.. lol.

The biggest compliment is for somebody to say... when did you go to the salon..when I did it myself.. I just beam.. lol. the small things in life.. :lachen:

like pp I am a diyer/salon chick. I like to go to the salon, but do my hair at home more than the salon...sometimes the pampering at the salon is nice to have!

Yeah.. I'm not that extra in the salon. My peeps already know where the bar is set... I remind myself this person is trained and other than the fact that I've read a few articles, watched a youtubes, and bought a few (okay a lot) of products .. I am not a professional; plus I can only imagine if someone came on my job (well they do:lachen: and I get pissed) telling me how to do it.. :yep:

I'm definatly a DIYer... I haven't been to a salon since 2005 because I just don't like people in my hair!! I've learned alot from here, browsing through fotkis, hair school, and the hair magazines, that I take pretty good care of it!! My hair hasn't been in really bad condition in years, even when I bleached it 2 years ago!! So I like to keep it in my hands!

I am a DIYer. I will go to the Salon every year or two for a cut and that's only if I have jacked it up!!

DIYer here...I haven't stepped foot inside a salon in years! I don't trust them, not even my own cousin who is a licensed cosmetologist! :lachen:

I'm a DIY'er becuase to me it's costly to go to the salon. I love my stylist, but I find that maintaining my hair can be done at home. I only go if there is a special occasion and i'm going to straighten my hair. I used to go every two weeks and that was costing me like $120. I recognize that we are in a Recession lol.

I can't call myself a complete DIYer yet as they're still things that I'm learning, like how to relax and also how to trim.

I'm a DIYer 'in training.' ;)

hard core Salon chick..every week like clock work. I have a good stylist that listens and doesn't do anything random with my hair, everything that passes through her hands I either give to her or we have previously discussed. I bring most of my products, I just can't handle washing my hair every week. (sorry I am not a biweekly chick, my hair will shed, break, and revolt if not cleansed). I can handle the maintainance during the week, usually down for the first two days, up in a bun for the rest of the week, unless special occassion.

I'm going out of town tomorrow so i wanted to roller set my hair. Been a LONG week at work and didnt feel like doing it myself. I usually do everything except for touch up. Am now transitioning. Soooo....I went to the Dooby Shop this afternoon for a wash and set and my NERVES ARE TORE UP! I've been in a bun since last Thursday...took the bun out and she proceeds to try and comb dry from the roots. I'm like tips to roots "boo boo"! Then she shampoos me like 4 times scratching my scalp with her nails. I'm like finger pads "boo boo"! She puts on conditioner while I'm lying back in bowl...NONE reaches the back of my head...again starts to comb from front roots to bottom. I'm like tips to roots "boo boo"! She said...I am going from the tips...HOW if my tips are lying in the bowl! I made her STOP! She now has an attitude! She rolls me. I dry! I said...no comb out...do you have oil? I'd just like a little oil run thru the curls and I'll be fine. She said YES we have oil. She proceeds to get the Mizani oil sheen and spray my SCALP! OH LORD!

Ok....I am NOW home under the dryer deep conditioning my hair...prepping to roller set!

I am and forever will be a DYI!!!!!!

I voted Salon Chick only because I go to get a touch up. IMO You're not truly a DIYer until you're amazing enough to succesfully do a relaxer on your hair (unless you're natural of course).

Thanks for everyone's input so far. The reason behind this question is that I am a DIYer "wash, cut, color, and relax for the last year and a half" and a PJ. I have grown my hair to APL after a two inch trim "which is the longest that it have even been since relaxing my hair". My problem is I have EXTEMELY hard water and I am getting tired of buying filters, buying distilled water, chelating and so forth just to keep my hair healthy. Therefore with me being a PJ I am wondering if the money I spend on products could be put to "better use" as in finding a great stylist and having her or him do my relaxers and so forth and maybe start going to the salon every 3 or 4 weeks on a regular basis. I will maintain in between but not so much and I am thinking on focusing more on growth aids. I have also gotten to the point where it seems that no condition works, even at chelating "Nexxus Aloe Rid" followed by Roux Porosty Control. Maybe after hearing more input will help me decide on what to do also going natural is not an option.

Or I can ask the Lord to take control of my spending problem!:yep:

Sorry so long.

I'm a DIY'er, and my hair has never been this healthy.

I too thought about the costs spent on products, but the time alone is worth its weight in gold. I used to spend hours in the salon only to get a hair style that I wanted to wash out immediately or looked like I never went to the salon a few days later.

I am a DIYER and have not been to the salon in 4 years.
The money I wound spend at the salon I use to invest in quality products and hair tools.
I am a PJ and have plenty of shampoo's,conditioners and styling product to do my own hair.
I can relax, rollerset and wrap my hair with good results, plus wear wigs.

I am a DIYer and havent been to a salon in 5 years. I basically taught myself to do everything (permanent hair color, relaxers, rollersets, etc). I would only visit a salon for aesthetic treats like facials and pedicures. However, I don't have to do that because I mastered doing my own acrylic nails and manicures way back in high school. I save a lot of money hair-wise because I have a lot of products and have invested in the styling tools I need to do my hair at home. I can't do my own braids, so that's the only thing I would go to a salon for.

I will never set foot in a salon again, even for a future wedding. I plan to do my own cleansing/dc'ing and just ask a pro to style it for my wedding day (whenever that'll be). I will not even risk sacrificing time, length, or health of my hair for a half-baked stylist to f-up my hair and have me regretting dropping the dough in the first place.
