No matter what I do, my hair get EXTREMELY dry. It only feels soft on the day that I DC and after that, it's a wrap. I moisturize the ends and the hair shaft every day with some condish and EVOO and nothing is working. Mind you I have some raggedy ends with all the bad stuff i'm trying to grow out...
-----> texturizer, bleached higlights, perm. color <----
So, hopefully after i get my end trimmed:sad: my hair will thrive..are the ends the problem? what has worked for you ladies with extreme and excessive dryness in the hair?

I plan to get a GOOD trim and get some individual braids and keep them in until my winter break from school..

comments are more than welcome...

Sounds like your hair may be overly porous. Maybe you should try an ACV rinse or some porosity control, I know that's worked for a lot of ladies here.

Also, you may need to do a light protein condition which could help the hair to better intake the moisture.

Hot oil treatments work really well for me also. How often do you deep condition? Maybe you can do it 2x a week and see how that helps.

Maybe you could try something with glycerin during the summer, and some shea butter during the winter? What conditioner are you using? If its got cones or buildsup easily that may be the problem, especially if you do not clarify...

The moisturizer you are using may not be right for your hair. I went through several before I found one that works for me: Hawaiian Silky followed by Hot 10 Oil. You may just have to experiment.

Mine "drinks" stuff too.

Everything except for hair grease. I apply a light coating to the ends. Then I do about halfway up the shaft and back over the ends.

I LOVE Ultra Sheen, but its too hard for me to find where I live so I am using Silk Elements from Sally's right now. It as a great scent. It helps keep my ends from splitting and they stay strong.

Co-signing on checking porosity first. A lot of women add Porosity Control to their DCs; I like to DC with heat and then follow with an acv rinse as the final rinse. I started doing this when I joined the board, and the difference in my hair's moisture level in the past 3 months is really amazing to me!! I don't know anything about caring for hair while they're in braids, so I'll let other ladies chime in on that. Good luck, and HHG!

^Cburney-for right now i wash and DC my hair once a week..trying to keep a simple reggie. and i recently found some ACV in the closet so I might give that a try.

^^Aviah- I pre-poo with ORS hair mayo and DC with AO desert herb condish..love boht, but it only lasts for a day it seems..and I don't really use products with cones so I think i'm going to scratch that idea..i do think that i need to dilute my aphogee clarifying poo though..but i recently recieved my poo bars..

^^^dachsies-rule- I have been looking around, but my pockets are running slim with all my upcoming expenses, so i have been trying to make what i have work! but i have been through quite a few and now i'm using condish to keep hair moitsurized..

I heard, but don't ask me how true it is that when your hair is porous it's not in it's healthiest state. Something about the strands or the keratin or cuticle of the hair not being closed. I have no idea how true that is.

&& yes there is some truth to that. Luckily, hair grows and trims are readily available too..not saying that i want to constantly have to cut off my dry and ragged ends (an ongoing problem of mines)..but i'm just hoping that my hair doesnt grow out of my head porous (in a bad way)..

My hair used to be this way and I corrected it by:

1) Dcing like mad. I would dc 2-3x a week. I started out using Pantene Relaxed & Natural, ORS Replenishing, and Elasta QP DPR-11 before moving to natural dc's like honey/yogurt/baby food bananas, the caramel treatment, or sour cream and a little conditioner mixed. I would use a heating cap sometimes and I slept with these in my head overnight as much as possible.

2) I stopped using shampoo all together.

3) I soaked my hair with conditioner whenever possible and would wear it out like that during the day. All of my leave ins were conditiner based (like the curly pudding recipe in my blog)

4) ACV rinses after most cowashes. I would mix about 2-3 tbsp of acv, a tbsp of honey or molasses, and about 12 ounces of water. I use an applicator bottle to pour it over my head after cowashing and don't rinse.

5) Always sleep with my head covered and in a loose ponytail.

1) do you ever have a problem with over conditioning your hair? my mom always rants about i'm going to mess my hair up and over condition it! we have similar hair (very similar) so i keep her advice in the back of my mind...

2)Not an option, but when i do clarify, i vow to dilute it with all my heart!

3) all the others seem like great idea, minus the pontail only b/c my hair wont get in onw without the help of heat and i'm challenging myself to no heat for like a year..

but it's glad to know that this problem may not be permanent...

Not directed at me, but I do have a problem with overconditioning my hair. My hair needs TONS of moisture, but it needs to be balanced with a good dose of protein. When I tried to do moisture only, my hair suffered tremendously, so I've been incorporating medium and heavy protein treatments into my routine (I'm natural and do the aphogee 2 step every six weeks). So do make sure that you have a balance in your regimen :yep:.

I just find it hard to believe that a protein treatment every 6 weeks will balance out the moisture that i'm adding in..not calling you or anybody else who uses hardcore protein, but it baffles me everytime..

but time tells a lot and some of the pics on here from hard core protein say enough! but until i finish off my ORS hair mayo, it's pre-poo with protein and DC with moisture!

I have never tried Porosity Control before, but I think it's time for me to try this. Sometimes my ends get dry and break no matter what moisturizer and sealer I put on it. I can't have my ends breaking off, that's a big no no. :nono: I will definitely be trying the Porosity Control this weekend.

ETA: OK that does it, I have to get Porosity Control.

From the article: "The ends of the hair are typically the most porous because the cuticle layers in this region have simply been opening and closing the longest."

Thanks OP, I have the same problem (ie soak hair in evoo overnight for pre-poo and baggy then no trace left in the am ) and was thinking of starting a thread like this

now thanks to you and respondents I know I need to add some porosity control to my reggie :yep:

Adding porosity control to my weekly shampoo regimen has helped my porosity issues tremendously! My hair use to suck up humidity out of the air just like it was getting a good drink of water from a water fountain!!! :lachen:Experiment with products that are ph balanced; lay the cuticle down, and I bet you'll see a difference!

Do you use the Porosity Control conditioner? This question goes out to anyone else who uses Porosity Control as well.

yeah based on these responses, i think i'm going to start with some weekly acv rinses and see where that gets me and i'm thinking that alter ego garlic condish is calling my name..

My hair was like that too. Try porosity control and then apply castor oil while your hair is in a few braids. Let it sit a little while. Castor oil is a heaven send to me. It makes my hair so soft more than anything else on earth.

Actually, my protein routine goes like this:

Week 1: Aphogee 2 step
week 2: mild protein (like GPB, but I've got lots)
Week 3: Emergencee
Week 4: mild protein
Week 5: Emergencee
Week 6: mild protein
Week 7: Aphogee 2 step

I think it balances fairly well, but most women here are much more protein sensitive than I am. I wash 2x/week, Wednesday with moisture DC and Saturday as above. Some women can go every 2 weeks, once a month, once every couple of weeks without protein. As you can see, I cannot :nono:. My hair is much happier with the above routine.

Same issue my niece is having. her hair is damaged and it is extremely porous. so it soaks up the moisturizer and is still dry. Because the hair is damaged and porous, it cannot properly hold moisture. The balance of protein is off. so add protein to your hair diet...also ACV is good. Find other LCHFers that have hair similiar to yours, and try the same protein products that work for them. Mines are Aveda Damage Remedy, giovanni 50/50, and Vatika oil... but maybe try something hardcore.

My hair loves protein and I used the hardcore protein every 6 weeks and it helped me tremendously. I love it. It makes perfect sense that it would balance out the moisture.

The problem only comes when you use too much of a good thing.

That's what i was thinking. . .and i found out that it was the truth from experiencing it with my own hair. Try porosity control. It worked on my hair. think I'll stop by sally and get some today as a matter of fact.

Do you use the Porosity Control conditioner? This question goes out to anyone else who uses Porosity Control as well.

Yes the Conditioner (Corrector) that's what you want to get.:yep:

I also have the Shampoo, and the Mendex but haven't tried those yet. But I have heard Great things about them both.

I only use Shampoo now, basically to Clarify. And the Mendex acts basically as a "reconstructor" so I will probably use that next time I self-relax as the Step before neutralizing.

Or perhaps the week before.

okay so do you just implement mild and light protein in between the hard core treatments, or do you just use moisturizing DC's?

^^SuperNova- how do you use your porosity control? just the condish or do you use the whole line? and speaking of PC..someone just commented on a previous thread about PC products

-------> running to next thread!

I've used the corrector only. I used it after relaxing which left my hair really feeling good, filled in. And I've used it just after a regular wash to see if it would do anything. I like it .
