If you do, how is it working for you?

I really want to try hennaing weekly until September for the conditioning properties (not the color necessarily). The thing that keeps me from doing it though is the time consumption.

Thanks in advance!

I've been using henna weekly for the past 3 weeks and plan to continue with this regimen until I reach 16 weeks post (Im 9 weeks post now). The first 2 times I did full blown henna treatments with Karishma henna & water only (one for 5hrs and the other over night). The 3rd week I did a henna gloss (Defrosted pre-mixed Karishma henna & AO GPB) overnight.

My hair LOVES henna, I think this was the missing link to my hair regimen.

BTW: I have 4b, relaxed, very fine, medium density hair.

How are you able to do this?

I used henna because I wanted to thicken it up and I had a major setback (tons of breakage). Any suggestions on how to incorporate this in my regimen? I heard such wonderful things about henna so I must have done something wrong.

I would like to know to. Also, when ppl say using henna for conditioning, they mean protein conditioning right? You can't use this for a moisture DC can you?

Great questions. I want to know too.

I just purchased henna last night in hopes of thickening my strands. My natural hair doesn't like harsh proteins, so hopefully I can do this once a month.

hm. this is interesting. did you notice a thickness in your strands from doing this so often? if so, i might have to look into this.
i henna 1x every 3 months or so, but mainly just for the red color deposit.

Great thread! I was just asking this same question in a thread this morning. I just did my first henna this past weekend and I'm wanting to do it again this weekend.

I do it weekly. As I type this I have henna defrosting on my counter. This is my forth week doing this. I did overnight treatments for the first two weeks, and for the following weeks I have been steaming with the mixture in my hair for 1hr and keeping it in my hair two hours after that. I use Jamilla henna from the Indian store and I just use water to mix it, with a squirt of lemon juice. I apply it to dry hair btw. After rinsing it out, I DC under my steamer just in case.

This system has been a blessing. My hair is the most moisturized and the softest it has ever been. I thought that my texture would never get this soft. I just accepted my rough texture before the henna treatments. But it turned out to not be true, because my hair is soft like a cloud. I am a 4a with some 3c natural btw.

For me it acts like a protein treatment, without drying out my hair. My curls are more defined and my hair "hangs" better.

For the ladies that are having success with henna treatments, does your hair thrive on protein?

Are any of you protein sensitive?

I henna weekly and I love it. My hair is stronger, feels thicker, hangs better and I love the red highlights.
I use Jamila or Nupur henna mixed with paprika. I have also done two glosses with V05 Moisture Milks.

Ok. I am going to try this every week until October. Thanks for all of the replies!

Hi taz,

Where did you get your henna? What kind are you using?
I'm going to try henna as well. Let's be henna buddies.

I apply my full head henna treatments 2x's per month. Every 2nd and 4th friday. I apply it just before I go to bed. IN the morning I wash it out & proceed to DC with heat with some very very moisturizing products. Henna is NOT a protein, but the plant-based tanin appears to have the characteristics of protein to our hair. Henna gives my hair strength, thickness, shine, smoothness, and overall conditioning of the hair cuticles. However, henna alone will NOT moisturize your hair. Since I sleep with mine, I make sure to mix in some really great moisturizing agents like Aubrey Organics White Camelia Ultra Smoothing conditioner....mmmmmm:lick:, and also some Dabur Amla oil. That's it.

In the morning when I wash out my NUPUR henna, the condish + the oils make it rinse like butta. I STILL proceed to use moisturizing DC with heat for at least 30min. Then my treatment is done and my hair is thanking me for a very long time...:yep:

Great post, baddison. Thanks.

I plan on mixing my henna with honey suckle rose condish. Would castor oil mixed in with henna and condish block the effects of the henna?

I was henna'ing weekly, but my hair is very protein sensitive. So now I only do it when my hair begins to get mushy.

Not sure about being protein sensitive but henna is not a protein.

Henna used to make my hair hard until ...

I applied the Joico Intense Hydrator over night and my hair is like silk!

Yodie - Let's do it! I will start this weekend. I am not going to like the clean up though :nono:.

The only thing you will have to worry about is protein overload so just maintain your deep conditioning. I used to do it weekly but I got tired of making the mixes all the time and it can be messy. I'm planning on stepping my henna game back up but will probably leave it to once a month

Henna is not a protein.

so that would mean there couldn't be any protein overload? the lady at mehandi told me yesterday that henna was protein. hmmm...

guess we should say that henna can have the same effect as protein overload.

henna acts like a protein, because it infuses stuff into your strands and can make it stronger. but henna contains no protein. people confuse it because during the rinse-out process, henna can sometimes make your hair feel hard, slightly similar to a heavy protein treatment.

I just wanted to stress this part. Henna IS NOT PROTEIN. I am protein sensitive, and I used henna weekly the first month I used it without any problems. Henna can be drying, so I wouldn't recommend using a protein DT while you henna. If you're going to do this weekly, then I would suggest using a protein leave-in to make sure you're not thrown out of your moisture-protein balance.

I also saw a question about mixing henna. Mixing henna with conditioner, oils, honey, etc. will block the coloring effects. I mix my henna with green tea and honey, and my hair is already very dark, so I get a very barely noticeable color impact, but my hair was still much stronger so the conditioning effects were still present.

I only stopped henna'ing my hair weekly because it was really loosening my curl pattern when I did it that often. Now I henna every 2-3 weeks, and my hair is in GREAT CONDITION!!!

It can act like a protein, filling damaged/weak parts of the hair follicle. It coats the hair and acts like a protective barrier. But too much of anything can be a bad thing. So yes, you can have excess residue with repetitive henna treatments that may be similar to a protein overload.

I am currently using a mix of henna\indigo from Mehandi.com although I will switch over to hennasooq.com.

Let's do this!

Thanks ladies. I've been researching henna for the last two days, non-stop. I feel like I've learned alot and am ready to proceed.

I'm wearing a sew in, so I plan on henna'ing the exposed part of my hair every two weeks. I get my sew in done every 10 weeks. So, would I still see benefits from henna'ing once every 10 weeks?
