Is it okay to relax you while it's wet? What's the difference between a perm and a relaxer?

I know some people in the black community use perm & relaxer interchangeably (lol I used to)...but a perm makes straight hair curly & a relaxer makes hair straight. Oh, and I've never heard of relaxers being applied to wet hair but I'm sure others will comment...hope that helps :)

NO, and please don't ever again if you had. For one thing your hair is too soft when wet so it will be hard to tell the different between the NG, and relaxed ends, and also it won't get straight enough. A perm is a permanent curl, and relaxer is a permanent straight patten.

There's no difference between perm and relaxer. Some of us use the term "perm" because it's permanent.

theres no difference, as long as you're not talking about the curly perms that white people use.

And NO! Don't relax on wet or damp hair. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

I think putting a relaxer on wet hair will make your hair break off. I mean I know that's a no no but I always assumed that would be the result.

Even though many of us have used this term "perm " to mean a relaxer, please understand that it is not correct to use it to mean a "relaxer". A perm makes curls, a wave Nouveau or "Jheri Curl " is a Perm. A "relaxer" , "straightener" or "texturizer" take curls away.

ITA with this.

I just wanted to add that people say "relaxer" I guess because the hair's curl pattern is being relaxed. I said perm all my life, but I tend to say relaxer nowadays. I'm becoming a hair snob :giggle:.

Hmmmm.....is it not the same chemical process for all of these hair treatments? Maybe not the same exact chemicals, but the same process; i.e. breaking down the bonds in the hair? I never understood the difference.

I said perm until I joined the hair boards. Most of the people I'm around were new because I'd jsut gone to college, but they are always looking at me like, "Why she always say relaxer???" :giggle:

I've always thought of it as a technical difference that is mostly outlined by/for stylists, or people in the trade (and fellow hair snobs).

The bonds are being broken down, but the goals are different, and whats done to the hair physically as the bonds are broken is different.

So... it's not exactly the same thing... the chemical process is the same, but not the physical process.

relaxer on wet hair can't make it break off. but when your hair is wet, that affects the pH of the relaxer balance.

relaxers have a ph between 9 and 12.

hair has a natural pH between 4.5 - 5.5.

water has a neutral pH, of 7.

when your hair is wet, the pH from the water will automatically cancel some of the straightening that occurs from the relaxer. in a sense, because there's water in your hair, it dilutes the relaxer, and your hair won't process fully.

it's best to relax on dry hair.

also, you won't want to do it on recently washed hair, because the scalp manipulation you did in the wash may increase scalp tingling and burns.

i've done relaxers when my hair was slightly damp, and the damp parts didn't process fully.

hope that helps :)

I already know this. LOL. Read my post again. Maybe you didn't read the part where I said this "term" that some people use. And read the part where I mentioned curly perm.

I know a lot about hair, but I know you are just trying to help. I know you just didn't get what I was trying to say.
