Sore scalp when trying to transition

Has anyone ever experienced this? The couple of times I have tried to transition, usually around month 3.5, my scalp gets super sore whenever I try to comb or part my hair or anything. It usually scares me and I end up relaxing.

Is there a particular reason for this? Can someone shed some light on this situation? TIA

I think it's all the NG. :yep:

I get sore scalp whenever I have build-up, or a growth spurt. Usually it goes away after a few days. I massage it with a light oil and gently pull on my hair to relieve the tension. Sometimes I shed more during this time too.

It it really bothers you, try an advil.

I guess it is a bit of a growth spurt. I'm thinking of transitioning again. I hate to even say that b/c I've tried probably like three times now. But that is the point where I usually give up. And I was also shedding more...guess I will just be popping some Aleves :lachen:Thanks :-)

I know how you feel. It seems like the very top of my head ( the crown I guess) is always tender.

For me it was trying to comb through the hair with the new growth. No matter how gentle I tried to be, it DEFINITELY got sore on me. I would get a lot of breakage if I wasn't ultra careful. Like Soleil said, it should go away, and lessen as you get more accustomed to dealing with the textures. I'd say mine probably got better around the 4-5 month mark, meaning I didn't have any soreness. I cut 12 inches of relaxed hair off after 7 months, and the remaining 2 inches after 10. Dealing with one texture, whichever it is, is absolutely easier than dealing with 2!

Thank you. I just thought for a while that I had a really weird scalp!

This happens to me often...in fact it just happened yesterday and I just rubbed a little vatika oil on the area and massaged it for a few seconds and it felt a lot better.

BUMPING TO RANT ON SAME ISSUE: i just finished taking out these braids i had in for 11 weeks. my head is sooo freaking sore and tender, and i still have 1/3 of hair left to detangle  why me??? I am 26 weeks post and trying to transition.

is there anything i can do to make this better? I gotta leave the house and my hair is big and crazy looking and i cant even finish detangling let alone do a temp style. :wallbash:

If it wasn't for the goody brush and the mane and tail detangler, i would have been a ****headed sista tonight..

I had scalp pain, tenderness, numbness, aches, in my crown area when I used to relax

it went away after going natural. So I think it may have been the relaxer that actually was causing it

A couple of times when I left my hair loose too long it got a lil sore, but that's it.

Rubbing/massaging it with oil and/or a soothing conditioner should help

@Amazing, girl, be sure to use some oil too if you're not already

Bumping...I'm transitioning now and I find that my hair already has two noticeably different textures. I dont know how to categorize them, but there's a spot in my crown area and the center back of my head that is more wirey, coarse, and densely packed than the rest of my head and my scalp really hurts in that area too.

Idk if anyone remembers my previous post, but I posted a question asking if relaxers caused anyone else serious pain in their scalp. Once I started my HHJ relaxers have become unbearable. My scalp gets tight and they burn but they don't leave scabs. I have ezcema and sometimes I have scalp flare ups but I don't relax when I have my outbreaks.

I'm not sure if my scalp is sore right there just because the textures different or if my scalp is detoxing from a relaxer or what. I've rubbed an oil mixture of almond oil, peppermint oil, castor oil, and soybean oil on it last night and this morning.

Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance!

yes I had the same issue so after 17wks of transitioning I went back to texlaxing. I plan to start another transition maybe for the new year I have not decided yet. I was getting a really sore scalp because my new growth comes in very tightly coiled I could barely part with the end of a rattail comb or large shower comb.

This happen for my in my 6th or 7th month of transitioning (I'm 12 now) and and it just gradually when away on it's own. It was painful, but I really didn't want to give up transitioning so I just sucked it up, took a painkiller, and pushed forward. I haven't had sore scalp since.

Hmmm....that's interesting. I was just thinking about this last night!

I'm fully natural now (10months post relaxer), and my scalp STILL feels tender and even a little itchy in some spots! :wallbash: I don't know if my scalp isn't agreeing with something or whether I have product buildup or my scalp is dry in the winter or what! All I know is that after I co-washed and rinsed my hair last night, my scalp starting itching something FIERCE!! Especially in the crown area. :nono:

I know I shouldn't have scratched it, but it itched so much! What is the cause of this? Does it ever go away?? I figured that since it's been 10 months since I've had any chemicals in my hair, my scalp would stop being itchy/sore/tender. But I'm finding that my crown area (the coarsest part of my scalp) is always a little itchier than the rest of my scalp.

Is there a reason for this? Should I be concerned?? :look:

Aloe very juice helps my tender areas. I spot treat the area for a few days and it goes away. I'm relaxed, not transitioning and this happens to me deep into a stretch. I find that it happens when I over manipulate the ng.

from what my stylist told me, relaxer numbs your scalp....so when you stretch for long periods or transition, you "feel" your scalp again.

it goes away in time.

Wow, really? Hearing stuff like that makes me want to stay away from relaxers. :spinning:

I get recurring soreness in one or two particular spots on my head, but I never thought to put it down to transitioning. But now that you mention it, I never did get these sores when I was still relaxing, so that's intriguing. But when I made a thread on this topic, I was told it was Megatek. But I haven't used it in months now, and the soreness still comes back from time to time. Hmmm.

What I do to soothe the sores is to rub the areas with lavender oil and castor oil. Sometime I will also go rinse my hair with water if I feel like it, and that help to soothe it as well. And maybe take pain killers if it's that bad.

I have the issue where I am natural and the crown of my scalp is sore. It makes detangling more of a chore. Then I don't feel so bad that I leave my hair braided for more than a month at a time.

I know this is an old post but i'm resurrecting it because this issue is real for me. I'm not transitioning but I am 15 weeks post relaxer, my longest stretch to date. Getting to know my NG and my scalp, I've recently noticed that my scalp felt numb. I thought something was wrong because I don't remember if this was the case all along. At the same time, I started noticing my crown was sore, I got a little scared but then it went away. "NUMB" is the exact term I used when I noticed it. Now two spots on my front hairline is very tender to the touch. So now I just gently poke at my scalp with my fingernail and the numbness is gone...my scalp now feels alive when before I barely felt the pinches. I'm starting to believe there is a direct correlation between relaxers and transitioners/long term stretchers experiencing scalp tenderness/pain. My tender spots are the exact spots that has not grown past 1-2 inches in many many years. I hope this really does mean my scalp is now waking in that area and now my hair will finally grow there. I'm getting my relaxer next week at 16 weeks post and i'm going to tell my stylist not to relax those two spots. I'm in experimental mode now.

Bumping for more replies. I'm transitioning, most of the time my scalp is so tender that I can't even massage it. Need something that doesn't include "applying x to the scalp"!
