my teammates used to do stuff like this every day...
I used to kirk on my teammates all the time for things like this... I was natural and the only black girl on my gymnastics team...
while I am still good friends with the lovely korean girl in this pic, me and another ex-teammate (white chick) were talking about this about 5 mins ago and I ended up hangin up on this girl cuz I brought up my hair, then she brought up these things they used to do to me... ie:

  • put skittles and other small candies in it
  • splash water on me or push me in the pool right after pressing it
  • putting chalk in it (gymnasts use chalk to decrease slipping)
  • calling me a wet dog...
  • hiding my scarves (i ended up just stopping my scarf use)
and she was like that was soooo funny, is your hair still like that or did you fix it yet... i was like B1t6h!!!! I know you didn't just say "fix"
I hung up the phone... i will not be looking at white folks in the eye for a few days... growl...

Yes, this is very annoying. I grew up around all white kids and they always acted like something was wrong with my hair. One time they dumped lemonade all over my hair. My mom was about to kill someone.

I have no advice to offer. I probably would've hung up too. I can't deal with folks like this. If they're too ignorant to try to even understand, I don't have the time. Respect is respect and folks know when the line is crossed.

I would never talk to that ignorant chick again! She is no good! She is jealous of how lush, thick, and healthy your hair is! She is most likely jealous of your gymnastic talents too! I am looking at her hair now and its thin and your hair is full of life! I am telling you she is HATIN!:angry2:

Who puts candy/chalk in someone's hair? That's just crazy. And chick all cheesing doing it that might be a reason to fight someone

. I probably would have hung up on the chick too talking bout did you "fix" it:nono: Your hair looks cute in the pic to me.

When I was younger, this little white girl from down the street turned the water hose on my head 1 hour after I got my hair pressed! She thought is was so funny. My moms was HOT!!! She went down the street and got her $30 from that girls momma.

I understand how you feel, OP. I lived in a mostly redneck area in North Georgia when I was in middle school. The people were so ignorant. They used to ask if I put "lard" in my hair to make it "greasy".:nono: (I wore a jheri curl back then). I was constantly asked if my hair would go up in flames like Michael Jackson's.:nono: I got tired of being teased and asked my mom to transition to relaxer. Needless to say, I went from APL curls to EL relaxer because a "stylist" didn't know how to do a safe transition to relaxer from jheri curl.

Anyway, I don't blame you, OP. I would be pissed too.:angry2::swearing:

Nobody every dared to do stuff like that to me, but one very sheltered soul did ask me how I could use shampoo without my spongy hair soaking it up. I couldn't get mad thought- she was one of those people that was so book smart there was no room for common sense.

Tha hell? That is just so wrong on so many levels. How can they do that? Just seems plain ignorant and racist to me. They were pretty much bullies.

Ouch! I'm so sorry they treated you like that..and had the nerve to think that mess was funny. They knew they were wrong, or they wouldn't have waited until now to speak up about it. I've never had people put things in my hair (lawd knows we woulda threw down!!!), but I did grow up around a lot of white kids, asians, and pacific islanders. The white kids were the worst though...I had one come up and ask me why my hair was always dirty because my mom used to put grease in it. I had plenty others just walk up and pull my hair (my hair was actually pretty long with the relaxer as a kid) and ask me if it was real or HORSE HAIR!!! Now mind you...I was pretty sheltered...and we wore our own hair out of our roots in my house so I had no clue this chick was referring to weave xD You get a lot of that though...haters who try to disguise it by making it look like there's something wrong with you. Tell them hatin' behind hussies to leave you alone and keep doing you.

Sorry to tell you, whether you are still cool with them or not, these people are not your friends (at the least they don't consider you their friend--friends don't act like that). They sound like frenemies: enemies that pretend to be friends.

It sounds like they must not know too many black people and they treat you as a fun "novelty" to get kicks out of messing with.

Sorry that happened to you but like another poster said these girls are not your friends. You need to stand up to them so at least they will respect even if they don't like you.

Question: You say you and the korean girl in the pic are still friends has she ever apologized for treating you like this? Is there a reason why you consider these girls friends?

Your hair is so beautiful. I would've hung up too but, just remember they were so ignorant. They have to get perms just to make their hair curly and it still wouldn't be natural or look like yours. I live in an all white town and that just makes me so mad!

Wait, did you say these people are your friends? Well, with friends like these... What they did to you was just mean. I agree with you hanging up the phone. I mean years after and they still think what they did to you was funny?

people seem to think there is a free license to touch black girl's hair and/or make fun of it
it's infuriating
im sorry
your hair is soo nice!

Ignorance is alive and well in 2009.

If you have to still associate with them, I would probably say as little as possible to them. I don't know how old they are, but they also sound immature.

I am sorry this has happened to you.

WTF??? :perplexed

I have never, ever, EVER endured anything like that, from white/black/red/brown/yellow/purple/pink with green polka dot people. That's just downright ridiculous. :nono:

My friends and I might joke about each other's racial differences (I'm talking men and women here), but it sounds like your friends took it a little too far. I wish a m*!#@^%?$a would push me into a pool right after I got my hair pressed and then ask me if I'd "fixed" it yet...

This has never happened to me but I can understand why you would be pissed. I wonder what give them the gutsy to do that type of stuff and WTH would they even do it? I can't understand that part.

What?! I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Your hair looks great! I remember that happening about 1 time in high school. Someone put pieces of paper in my hair. It was over after that. But the bad thing is you can't tell.

But make sure you've drawn the line so they don't ever cross it again if you still have to interact with them.

I know exactly how you feel - unfortunately. I grew up in a totally white area where they had never seen a black person before. My mum is white and she was constantly asked if she had adopted me and my two brothers and when she said no that the children were hers, they always looked totally puzzled!!

Anyway my hair has been called 'birds nest', mickey mouse ears (wearing two puffs), pulled and yanked as if it were public property often by teachers at my school and been the subject of many horrible jokes and taunts.

HOWEVER I have recently got back in touch with several of my school mates and one thing that I am sure of is that I would never swap to be them to get however possibly long and silky hair because I still look like I just left school and they DON'T :-) So our hair may give us a few more trials and tribulations but being a black woman has many more advantages overall!

I used to put stuff in my friends' hair all the time. It was usually pieces of paper though. I used to think it was funny to see how long it would take them to notice it was there.

I agree; they're behavior and the most recent comment are patronizing and not to be tolerated under any circumstances. I'm glad you hung up the phone - damn bright and out of order. :swearing:

This is why I don't let white people touch my hair.
