Why is it so hard for a Black woman in this city?!

Why is it that the most easily-accessible salons in this city charge you an arm and a leg to do your hair?!

This girl had very lush-looking hair and I asked her where she gets her hair done b/c the mist made my expand a little :(

She told me about this place and gave me a 25% off referral card.

I called them and set up an appointment. Then I'm thinking... I don't even know how much they charge! So I call back and ask what's the range for what I am getting done: a wash, set, and blowout.

This woman tells me that the STARTING price is $60!
$60?! for a wash and set?!:wallbash::wallbash:

Danggit. U know I didn't show up to my appointment?
I am really looking for another place.

I found a couple of places nearby, but I really don't want to go somewhere where I will waste my money.

I am 11 months post and recently cut my hair to my collarbone. At this point, in some places, I just have 3" of natural hair at most. I want my hair to be done in a way that it looks super full.

Right now, it might look like my hair could be handled by just anybody, but I NEED an effective blowout. I can't go to any old place. I stopped by somewhere where they told me "oh yeah we do blowouts" and it's a bunch of Haitian women. I have found that Haitian stylists do NOT know how to do blowouts like the kind I need. (nothing against Haitians, I am one too:))
PLUS, they had a jar of DAX grease in there, and I thought hm... heck no:perplexed

I see this Portuguese (me thinks) place nearby, and I think I am going to stop by there and get some info.

RANT OFF.

But if you have recommendations, PLEASE let me know!

MonicaTodd charges WAY TOO MUCH. Spent $85 in there once and I did NOT even get a relaxer. On my college budget, they have the nerve to ask me if I want to live a tip.

Liz's Haircare doesn't blowdry, and I need my entire head of hair blowdried. I have nearly 6 inches of natural hair.

Please help:)

When I was in school there, if you weren't getting a rollerset it was almost impossible to find a place to go, and it was definitely impossible to find a place that would work with a college student's budget. I basically wore braids/fro/braidouts the whole 4 years. I did have one great stylist who would wash, blowdry, and flat iron for 25$ in Central Square but she moved to Florida.

Sorry, I can't help you.

I feel your pain- which is why I have had to learn to do everything myself. You need a dominican salon, they would do a nice blow out. Try PM'ing BostonMaria she should be able to refer you. What about Olive's there is one in Chestnut Hill and Boston not sure if its Dorchester or "The Rox". I used to like then, but you did mention college budget and I remember her prices being crazy expensive.

hey there,
I lived in Boston for 5 years and yes...it was always expensive to get my hair done.
I had great experience at the following salons
Structure which is right when you get out of the Fields corner t-stop. It's by puertoricans
Ana's beauty salon which is also in Dorchester. by Cap-verdians
It is also on the red line, savin hills stop

and His and Hers on Mass Ave, right between the economy hardware and a restaurant bangkok blue I believe. Ask for Omar. He's great :)
hope that helps

Try Pisces on Hancock St. and Columbia Rd (Use either Josephina or Betty if u just want a blowout for like $30 or $35)....Whatever u do,Do NOT go to Carman's on Huntington, They messed my hair up..They are cheaper than Pisces, but sometimes u get what u pay for. A more expensive place is Salon 350 on Newbury, They are expensive, but Black owned, and very good :)

You could also try Liz Hair care on tremont street (brigham circle T stop), they are pretty good. There prices are reasonable depending on what stylist, senior stylist are more expensive. They all do a good job.

Hey Op thanks for asking this question. I moved back to Boston and I am ok doing my own rollersets but I do my own touch-ups. I have been going to Domingas in Brockton, they charge around 60 as well. But since I moved here to Somerville, I am so lost.

OT: OP are you going to the Boston meetup?

I'm in Taunton. Where is Domingas? I'd like a blow-out when I stop HMH. Are they good with color?

Thanks!

If Charlene's in Roxbury is still open, try there. I don't know about the prices now, but wayyyy back in the day, Olive and Charlene were young friends and hair rivals. Olive went more high end, Charlene stayed in the hood, but they both always did great hair. (Olive passed a few years back, I don't know about Charlene.) When I went to Charlene's I would get my hair pressed and they would also do color rinses and I would have the shiniest, bounciest hair. That was a long time ago, so I would check them out before letting anyone touch your hair. Olive's is very reliable for high quality hair care and my mother's friends who have gone there for years have gorgeous hair but they are EXPENSIVE.

I've looked at various websites like yelp and other forums to find the following info:

In Boston there are plenty of Dominican stylists in the Dorchester area. One is called Pisces on Hancock street near Uphams Corne. Another is called Amy and Maria's on Neposent Ave in Dorchester. Also, you could go to Charlene's in Roxbury on Humbolt Ave. See Mercedes; she is great and can do everything. If Mercedes is not available, try John. Good Luck.

1) MonicaTodd salon on Tremont
2) Betty from Pisces hair place on Handcock and Columbia road in Dorchester (the sister salon to Marie and Amy's) is awsome! She does the best weave and she doesn't pull when she braids but somehow she manages to braid pretty tight. you cant beat that..."

OMG!! I didn't know that Olive passed. She gave me first hair cut when I was 15. I have also been to Charlene's (back when it was in Grove Hall and went to elementary and high school with one of her daugters) and Danny's His and Hers. They all did a good job but I can't tell you anything else because I moved to San Diego (now in Texas) after going to school in Virginia. Sorry, just had to comment. A friend of mine's mother has a salon there. Her name is Michelle Collins. Not sure where it's located but she does a good job. She used to work in Charlene's a long time ago.

Hey ladies!

thanks for all your replies!

Try PM'ing BostonMaria she should be able to refer you.

Will do:)
Olive's is crazy expensive. My friends have been there and came out having paid over 100 bucks:look:

A more expensive place is Salon 350 on Newbury, They are expensive, but Black owned, and very good :)

My college budget can't handle expensive on a weekly basis:lol:

You could also try Liz Hair care on tremont street

They don't do full blowouts :( I have been there before.. twice I think. First time my hair looked amazing! second time when i had a good amount of new growth, not so much... they're so concerned about health that they are afraid to blowdry my newgrowth properly.
How else will I get my hair straight, then?:lachen:

But since I moved here to Somerville, I am so lost.

OT: OP are you going to the Boston meetup?

I scheduled an appointment for Zina's Hair Salon tomorrow. I hope it goes well.
You're in Somerville? I am subletting a room there for the summer too!
And I had no idea there was a meetup. Let me go find out more details!

1) MonicaTodd salon on Tremont

I didn't really like how they did my hair at Simply Erinns.
I wanted a full look and didn't get it :ohwell:

MonicaTodd... sigh. Yes, my hair looks great when I come out, but most of the time, it feels dry really soon after... because of the products they use.

The prices are outrageous now... this is the salon I went to where I was charged $85 and all I got done was a wash and blowout, with a trim. I cannot understand why a trim is $20-25:nono:

If I want to go relatively often this summer... I can't hit up MonicaTodd....

this is EXACTLY why i'm looking for a new stylist in the greater boston area... i can't get down with todd and his $20 trims, not to mention, he ALWAYS overbooks and tries to bully me into having services I don't want or need :nono:

bumping for more recommendations...

I'm just co-signing on Pisces.
I also go to Salon Monet on Newbury Street, but i doubt your willing to pay what they charge.

I only go to Dominican salons. If you're from the Boston metropolitan area and don't mind the trip to Lynn (2 towns over) then I can highly recommend at least 3 salons.

2 of my friends go here and love it.

===================================

My stylist is working from her house. Once she moves to the salon I will update with her info. She does a great relaxer, wash and set, wash and blow, she is very heavy handed with the trims but will only trim if you ask. She is okay with styling and I wouldn't let her give me a hair cut.

I'm welcome to all suggestions and my friend lives in Lynn so I'm down for those!!!

Also how is the pricing at these salons? I'm from Connecticut so I'm used to expensive salons.

&& How are these places at sew-ins . I'm looking to weave it up all winter so I'm doing my research now
