Does it act as a protein? I'm SO happy that my shedding has stopped, but maybe this is a sign that I should incorporate more protein into my regimen.

It binds itself to the protein in your hair, making it stronger.

Just a piece of advice, though Henna acts as a protein it is NOT protein, you may need to still incoporate protein in your regimen though not as much.
They are right it is not a protein but it works with the protein that is already in your hair. I think you will just have to see how your hair reacts over time. Some people don't need protein treatments anymore with the regular use of henna because it fortifies the protein that's already in the hair.

Personally for me I am not sure that I will need protein treatments anymore because a) I don't relax and b) the henna will bind to and strengthen the protein that's ALREADY in my hair so there's no need to keep adding more in my case.

Henna/Indigo is absolutely Great! I am just so fortunate to have found a "safer" alternative to bottled/chemical color/dye that has Healthy Hair Benefits as well.
I feel I have the best of both worlds with the Application of Henna. 1) Phemonenal Color and Natural Shine without that sometimes "dull" bottled look & superb coverage for my Grey -- 2) Healthy Stronger Hair.
Personally For Me, it's been Great.
