Getting Roller Sets at Cosmetology School

I've never gone for a rollerset, but I used to get my braids done at one when I was in HS. In my experience they were less sure of themselves - which meant they weren't bossy and they were gentler.

Also it's super cheap. :yep:

I'm wondering what is the shampoo/set/ finish. Could that be the roller set? I would get my hair rollerset and wrapped 2 times a week:yep: for $10. I can handle conditioning on my own. Updos 17 dollars. That price list is like heaven, lol.

I went to a high school with a cosmetology program (that I was enrolled in). This is a good way to get your hair done and for a lot less- in some cases, even FREE. It's a win, win: You need a service and they need to practice and perfect that service to you and others.

I am still grateful for that school. Til this day I can bang out a rollerset with NO problem :)

I used to go to a beauty school in Cleveland Heights for roller sets; I figured they couldn't do too much harm doing just that. I would not let them do anything chemical or color or cut me. I remember that they were closely supervised and clients, aka guinea pigs, were encouraged to immediately call a supervisor if they had any questions about the student's technique.

I have visited a cosmo school for a rollerset. The student works within one of my work settings so I just went to give her a confidence booster and more experience with rollersets. She used Biolage products, listened to my requests (comb ends first, use my wide tooth comb, etc) and even sealed my cuticles with cool water after my rinsing out the dc without me having to tell her .

I was pleased and best of all the d.c and rollerset totaled 10 bucks !

Btw, her teacher was quite close supervising too.

I only go to cosmo schools unless I am getting a relaxer. They do a really good job and because they aren't getting paid (except tips) they aren't pushy

I've had my hair done at a cosmo school a few times....Just make sure their policy states that it's ok for you to bring your own products and you should be good.

If there was one in my area, i would surely go there for a rollerset, but nothing else :nono::nono::nono:

I used to do it all the time, they listen to you and will not add product when you tell them not to. Yes, and it is really cheap! My theory, after so many poor attempts with seasoned stylist, how could a newbie mess up a rollerset, and it worked like a charm!

I love the hair schools. I used to go and still do at times when need a do and can't afford a regular salon. I loved my experience. The school I went to they would brush a my hair while holding the dryer rather than straight blow drying the hair which is much better. Their cheap and very grateful to have you as a customer. Not sure about their products though so you may want to ask what types of products they use for the hair.

I'm glad that most people have had very positive experiences with them. I do my own relaxers so I would be going weekly for a rollerset or wrap. They website says they use Rusk Products.

Vogue - on Cedar across the street from Heights High School -- is it still there? The other one I went to was in Maple Heights - at Southgate.

Oohh! I'd love to get a ten dollar rollerset every week! I'd DC at home and just have them style it. That would be GREAT! Anybody know of any great ones in Chicago?

I do. I have only had one bad experience at a school, other than that...top notch service.

They are not getting paid so I find that they are less pushy and since the point of them doing hair is to learn, they take more time to do things right IMO.

I went there to get my inverted bob cut and I was there just Thursday for a trim. I make it point to form a relationship with my favorite students and show them some love after they graduate.

Paul Mitchell just opened a school in University Village (near UIC), I'm not sure how much their rollersets are though.

I used to go to Capri in Oak Forest, they also have a school on the Southside. Otherwise, Pivot Point has several locations around the city and their flagship location is in Evanston. HTH!

Went to one today. Got a nice rollerset for $10. I brought my own products but they used Mizani so I didn't need mine. Will be making this a regular visit and got cheapo DH to fund this.

I've never tried it personally, but my mom has and she had great results. Like some of the other ladies, she recommends that you take your own products.

I go all the time... I only go to my stylist for my relaxer... Shoot my stylist costs 45.00 for a wash/set or rollerset!! I go to the beauty school and get a roller set for 7.00, a wash and set for 10.00... woo-hoo!! And I am in and out!

You have any pictures? I'm going tomorrow. I will do a dc tonight. My area school use all Rusk Products. I have only used the Smoother (love it), so I don't know about the other products.

Leona, i wish i could visit the one you mentioned, but fm 1960 is almost an hour's drive away....

I used to visit these, as well, years ago. They'd do a great job, however, the times are not convenient - most aren't open on the weekends, some aren't open on friday! i planned on visiting one in h-town, off of 59 south next week.

I know this tread is old, but I’ve been going to the local Cosmo School since 2007. I go every Friday the owner knows me by name and I know just about all the students. I was debating doing my roller sets myself at home since this lady who has been roller setting my hair for the past year recently graduated. But honestly I don’t have the patience right now and I know they can’t do any harm just roller setting your hair. Just make sure they are detangling your hair with a wide tooth comb and combing from the roots 1st. I take my own products and have my own rollers and clips and I always leave there with my rollers in to give my hair a chance to set. Oh yeah, a roller set only costs $8 which is not going to break the bank especially when salons charging between $35-45 for a roller set.
