TRANSITION OVER! 11-22-14
I have been natural going on 5 months now. My first 4 months was great and my hair thrived. This last month, my hair has been bone dry, and hard. I don't know why because I clarify and I use shampoo 2Xs a month. I am open to suggestions because I am trying to keep up my progress. I was using HH hello hydration, but now my hair doesn't like it.:ohwell: I don't know what to do with my hair anymore. It is not responding to any products that I use and I am at my wits end.:wallbash: This has never happened to me this bad before. My hair is tangling up something fierce. I am so discouraged right now.

HH is loaded with silicones DD. i'd think you're having a build up problem. Clarify a couple times then follow up with the best deep moisturizing non-silicone conditioner you've got.

see what happens........

I'm going to try that tonight. Thank you. Can u tell me of some products that are not loaded with silicones?:ohwell:

Where can I get Aubrey's from? I am willing to change my regimen to get my hair back to being happy again! How do you baggy? I'm kinda slow on this wagon.

Try using some natural stuff so you don't have to worry about 'cones for a while.

After clarifying try a honey and olive oil deep condition.

Baggying is basically covering the ends with something (I use castor oil and covering it with a shower cap. It keeps the ends from drying out.

When you say hair, do you mean your whole head or just the ends? Keep in mind that you could have scab hair and might need to slowly start trimming it down.

I have to agree with the poster that mentioned baggying. I have read about baggying since i joined the board but it was really never an option for me since I wore my hair straight most of the time. Since I have been doing braidouts during my transition, my hair is unusually dry, especially at the roots.

I started by making sure I jumped back on my deep conditioning routine, clarifying, and then baggying my hair each night (after I put the plaits back in) I also make sure I moisturize the ends and seal with castor oil. These past few days the light bulb went off in me and I did ALL of these things and when I took my hair down today, it was moisturized and so soft from root to tip.

A recent post by pmichael suggested that clarifying may be the culprit in causing extra dry hair. Have you considered not clarifying your hair for a while to see if that improves it. I am really thinking about eliminating that from my routine in the future.

But one thing that helped me with dryness is washing with conditioner and then sealing my wet hair with a heavy oil or grease.

I hope you find a solution.:yep:

Could it be the weather? I see you're in NY. The cold dry fall/winter make my hair dry... I'll be looking for some braids or twists soon to protect my hair from the cold winds

I would also suggest an oil rinse as a final step when washing/co-washing. I was using a cheapie coconut oil (food section in Wal-Mart) & I would work it in my hair and then rinse with cold water.

i second the oil rinse. i added evoo and castor oil to my twists liberally and then rinsed w/ warm water in the shower and then i cowashed w/ Aveda Brilliant conditioner...my hair was VERY moisturized and soft. Also like others said, lay off the cones and maybe try clarifying only once a month and find a really good moisturizing shampoo to rotate in your routine. Also try diluting your shampoo. If you haven't tried Aveda, you might want to. It has turned the health of my hair around tremendously!

Your hair is beautiful mkstar!

I am thirding the coconut oil. This is a huge staple for me. I haven't tried the oil rinsing yet, but I do seal with tons of coconut oil everyday (except when flatironed) and it has helped my hair tremendously. Also, I have learned that my hair needs to be shampoo'd after about 5 or 6 cowashes to get all the buildup out. Not a clarifying poo, but something gentle which for me is my bumble and bumble.

Try the Caramel Treatment. It's fantastic for moisturizing.

I also love cones and I always use a clarifying shampoo. In my experience, not all clarifying shampoos are equal. I use a shampoo that is made for removing the chlorine from hair after swimming, it leaves my hair very very soft.

Also add oil to your regular conditioning regimen- or my favorite- shea butter.

My hair was horrifyingly dry - I didn't think there was anything I could do to it that would stop the snap crackle pop anytime I even looked at it wrong. This is what I had to do. You might not have to do all of it, but here it is. I'd suggest starting with one thing, and doing it for a week or two to see how your hair reacts before adding or moving onto something new......

Good luck!!

1) No silicone - silicone coat & seal your hair until it's washed/clarified off. If you are using something with silicone in it, and then try to moisturize on top of that - you aren't going to get NEARLY the good results as you could on 'uncoated' hair.

2) No mineral oil/petroluem products - it made my hair feel drier - at this point, I can tell - just from how my hair feels afterwards if a product I used had mineral oil in it.

3) No Shampoo - I found for my hair and scalp, it was FAR too stripping and drying - I cowash only, and clarify gently with about 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of conditioner. My hair and scalp STAY clean and smelling fresh.

4) Baggying - for a while, esp. when it's EXTRA hot (and I suspect I'll have to start up again now that the dry heat is on) I had to baggy every night - I wear my hair in flat/two strand twists, but this would work for wash & go's too - depending on the style, spritz your hair with a water/conditioner/humectant mixture, put on a shower cap, put on a cute headscarf, and head to bed. Or, get your hair wet, coat with conditioner, go to bed. It took me about a week and a half to get my hair SUPER moisturized, and then I only had to do this every other night, and lately, I've been doing it once a week, if I feel like it.

5) Henna - it's a crucial part of my routine, and I can't say that anything 'changed' my hair without mentioning henna as well. I overused it (once a week) at the start, and that was setback as my hair went CRAZY hard and dry, but my current once a month schedule is about perfect.

I think that could be it also, my hair is dry and hard today. And I cowashed yesterday and added castor oil.:perplexed

I agree with baggying. I pretend like I have a jherri curl and a moisturize my hair and throw on a plastic cap at night. Your hair should be nice and moist in the morning.

Oh, thank you for all your help! I'm going to try the overnight baggying first, if my twists don't work out. I appreciate all the help you've given me.:grouphug:

I quickly realized for my 3C hair texture conditioner alone was never going to work- it leaves my hair with buildup no matter how good I rinse so what I end up doing is making up for dryness with a nice thick pomade daily.....or a nice oiling one day and, after shampooing the next day, a follow-up oiling....i LOVE (as does my hair lol) thick moisturizer applied lightly....

I find the best way to be effective with products (and others may disagree) is to switch them up and OFTEN! I often find a reliable product line and stick with all of the product within the line and load up on them.... like if your favorite product line has 3 types of leave-ins then switch them up day to day, week to week to shake up the routine.... Something of that nature. I stick with Oyin products usually and they have never failed me, they are all natural and almost 100% organic and I like that they don't have parabens at all now.... I'll spend like $80-$100 a season and load up on staples so I don't have to re-order too often. Don't be discouraged... my hair was the same way until I found just one line I liked.....it helped me to develop a regime around this one line and use the products to their maximum effectiveness....

let me know what you think!

I never thought about treating my hair like a jherri curl but it makes sense.

My hair started acting up about two weeks ago and I attribute it to the weather change. Cold weather makes my hair dry and tangly if I'm not careful.

Aside from overnight baggying; I believe that a steamer has been my saving grace for overall dryness. I don't think $129 is too much for a lifetime investment.

I have 4b hair and I used to have major issues with dryness. However, since I wasn't educated on really taking care of natural hair, I thought it was something I just had to live with. After I discovered this board, I learned that my hair shouldn't be dry. I've tried a lot of different products, but now have found the Redken Smooth Down line and my hair is loving it. The Butter Treat and Detangling Cream make my hair feel like heaven! For dry ends, I discovered, from Avon of all places, a dry ends serum that I just started using last month and it is doing wonders for my ends.

I use deep conditioners & AO honey suckle rose as leave in moisturizers ... its the only thing that gives me moisture :perplexed

Same. I've just started using conditioner as a leave in. I've tried a lot of things, and this is the only method that gives me moisture that lasts. Glycerine/water/aloe mixes work well, but I've found it doesn't last as long as I'd like esp on my ends.

I'm transitioning (6 mos post) and my hair is hard and dry. I really really don't know how I will be able to care for my full blown natural hair..

I love AO Honeysuckle .. how do guys use that as a moisturizer? Doesn't that build up?

I also find if I use it too often my hair gets a little mushy. What protein do you use?
