Okay..I'm a fan of ateya, only because her hair is soo fly. One thing I've heard her say before was that the healthier your hair is, the less it holds curl. Do yall find that to be true?

I've never understood that.

The only thing I can think of is that stronger hair would require more heat in order to break the bonds necessary to make it curl. But that doesn't explain why the curl would fall out faster.

Hmmm. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I thought the opposite was true. Most times hair is damaged and so you can't get it to do much over anything. You end up using more heat and then causing more damage

Healthy hair curls fine...check some Foktis on this board

I agree with the other ladies, that just doesnt sound right to me. I would think the healthier the hair is the more coopertive (sp) it would be

Uhhh i dont know where shes been but not only does damaged hair not hold a curl so does fine & thin hair..ohh and cheap weave too!

I would think that relaxed hair won't hold a curl because it is heat/chemically damaged or just needs to be clarified/chelated.
Not sure about natural heads.

I found my hair to be the opposite. When I had really healthy relaxed hair I would rollerset once per week and the curls lasted the whole week without me even having to pincurl. As my hair got more damaged and thinner it held the curls less

when my hair was unhealthy it held nothing. I'm speaking of split ends, broken off areas, dry and unkept....but when my hair is healthy it curls with the thought of a roller, when I'm not stretching I rollerset faithfully and wrap it at night, it takes a good 4 days for my curls to fall and it to actually become a roller wrap.. My hair holds curls tremendously...So maybe Ateyaa meant to say it the other way around or maybe she was just speaking for HER hair.

I'm in agreement that the healthier my hair is the more it holds curls. My thin damaged hair could not hold any hairstyles no matter what I did.

However, I did see the video you are referring to and her hair was not holding the curls that well, but I am not sure what the explanation is for that since her hair appeared to be healthy.

No.

One of the classic signs of damaged hair is hair that won't hold a curl. If your hair won't hold a curl, your elasticity is shot to hell. Your hydrogen and salt bonds at that point are extremely compromised from having damaged hair. The cuticle probably has lots of chips in it and in some cases, the cortex is probably exposed. In order to realign these bonds you need acidifying treatments and protein. This is why consistent acidifying product usage is important for all hair types since these bonds collectively hold 2/3rds of your strength and elasticity. This is even more important for the fine hair heads.

If you chronically over moisturize your hair, you can also notice a decrease curl holding abilities.

Wow. Havent heard words and phrases like that since I was in college...

Ateyaa has folks doing some really dumb ish to their heads. :nono: I don't see what the big deal is, what yall call "swang" I call lifeless and flat. *shrugs* to each their own. But she's wrong...again.

:lachen:

Can you post the video? Because I am confused. Why would relaxed hair hold a curl? I don't think she rollersets (I might be wrong) so this doesn't make sense to me.

the opposite is true for me. i'm a relaxed head, and when my hair stops holding curl, that's trouble for me..

I've only seen a couple of her vids but it seems that it may have to do with the way she styles her hair. It appears like she likes to wrap the hair. Maybe her hair doesn't hold a curl so easily because she naturally wears it so straight.

MY SHERO!! This is the type of learning that will teach us to grow hair - it's less about the cost and brand, and absolutely more about what our hair needs, why it has those needs, which products satisfy those needs, and the frequency of use.

I really don't see what the big deal is with her hair either....especially OVER here. I could name at least 20 people on this board with hair WAY more fly than hers :ohwell:

Yall please be respectful. While her methods contradict a lot of our practices, it works for her and she is just trying to help. :ohwell:

I agree with you. When my ends needs a trim because they have knots or splits, then my hair cannot straighten nicely or curl. When my hair has a fresh trim and is healthy then my hair curls perfectly.

WOW..didn't know so many would respond. Well in some of her videos she has said it's hard for her to keep curls (when using a curling iron) because her hair has reached "full health). She also said that her hair is hard to wrap because it falls because it's so healthy. If I can find the video I would try to post.

....i don't know about that.

I love ateyaa too....her personality is great and she motivates women to take care of themselves thats the important thing...she does a lot to her hair and it looks good...I dont agree with everything she does but for the most part is good :)

But i think hair (i am relaxed btw) curls when is healthy..when my hair is unhealthy it does nothing

....now ya'll got me worried. My hair dosent hold a curl for a long time unless it's been wet set. Are you all using any products to get the curl to hold?

I'm speaking for myself...the only time my hair didn't hold curl was when it was over processed, or seriously damaged. Once I cut it, I didn't have the problem again. I don't have to use any product get my hair to hold curl, it usually just stays put.

LOL Thats what i was thinking! Unless I have product on my hair either from wet setting or using a moisturizer, then it wont hold a curl.

AND, when i've JUST washed my hair and havent put anything in it, it will not hold.

Now 3-4 days later, when i've put pomade on my scalp, oil sheen and moisturizer on my hair, i'll put my rollers in and the curl will last.

I thought it was just a matter of your hair being dirty and clean. I figured dirty hair would hold a curl because you got product in it to do so. Clean hair doesnt seem to act right until i put some moisturizer or SOMETHING in it to tame it and hold its shape.

There are also other reasons your hair won't hold a curl, CHEAP *** CURLING IRONS ! My hair use to get on my nerves every part of my hair would bump- that was all I was getting from this curling iron at home (not using my marcels) One section in my back and it wasn't damaged wouldn't bump (my texture is different there) I got a better iron for home and it curled by not like the other, I have been dealing with that patch in the back for my life long 30 plus years and all I can say is GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Nah, But cheap irons do it too, (*12.99 for 3 revlon curlers- Need I say more, no, my hair was not curling & sometimes not even bumping)
