Henna: Older/Clearance Batches, Are They Just as Good?

I want to start hennaing and even though I have really dark hair, I am hoping that some of my browner/redder areas can get that rich, jewel toned burgundy that I have seen on some heads. I also want the conditioning, thickening effects because I want bigger, heavier hair. Do the older batches (summer 2006/2007) of henna that you can buy on clearance give the same amount of dye? How about the same amount of conditioning?

On the site it says that they have checked the dye release and it is the same. I emailed the owner and she told me that henna can keep for up to 5 years in the freezer. But every other source I have seen says only a year.

I really want the opinion of my LHCF family. Please share your opinions/experiences.

i buy my henna from local indian stores. I dont know how old this henna is, but it works just fine for me (and my wallet).

The dye releases and my hair is conditioned.

I once brought home a couple of expired boxes of henna from the local indian store. I used them and they worked the same as the ones with newer exp codes. No difference I could see.

Use 2 drops of a terpene like limonene essential oil or tea tree oil and boiling water. Allow to rest over 10 hours. Some people use henna after an hour or two and I don't know why !!! The dye will release. And we never truly know how old henna in the Indian stores is. But it always seems to work.

About having dark hair. Just the other day, I was in the store restroom with the fluorescent lights and I saw the burgundy in my hair. At home, I couldn't tell to much but it's very visible in natural light! I was surprised. So, if it still looks very dark at home, be assured that others will be able to see that wondrous translucent red.

I buy my henna from an Indian Store as well. There is boxes of it piled up on the shelves. I'm thinking some of them could be rather old--but I've had no issues with the color or conditioning. Works great.

I think that if you put cinnamon in the hair (maybe honey/cinnamix), it'll lighten the hair. Maybe it's cinnamon oil.
