Hey girls!
I'm still not too savvy on this whole co-washing thing I haven't done it because I'm not too sure how
do you follow up the conditioner with a dc as usual?
is it for people that want to wash their hair more frequently?
Is it for people with dry hair?
Is it for everyone?
Is it for people that don't have time to DC.
I'm so confused about this. I thought I understood it. I thought it was for people that are kind of against shampoo as a principle...
??:perplexed

People cowash for different reasons but the main reason is - instead of shampoos, as most shampoos contain SLS which can be drying. I cowash 2ce a week, but I also shampoo when I feel like my scalp needs to be cleaned (every 2-3 weeks).

Some cowash without DC'ing after - I tried this, didn't work for me. Some even leave some of the conditioner in their hair after rinsing out (i.e. not rinsing out completely) or squeeze out the excess conditioner...

Some shampoo wash, then cowash, then DC (or not)... I have done this a couple of times when my hair hasn't felt right after shampoo or shampoo bar washing...

I cowash (I'm learning now to switch between moisturising and protein conditioners to avoid over moisturising) for a few minutes, then DC for at least 30 minutes - My hair loves this.

Co-washing might not be for everyone because a friend of mine tried it a few times and she doesn't like the results... although I thought cowashing wasn't for me until I tried DC'ing after and now I love it.

Hey MixedChica401,

I was right there, too! Here's how I understand co-washing:

Just think of it as "shampooing/washing" your hair. That's it. Instead of using traditional shampoos, or shampoo bars, just use conditioner. Some folk co-wash while in the shower, wash their bods, then rinse themselves clean. Others, devote the time to lather up, let it sit and then rinse. They can follow it up with a DC (deep conditioning) or whatever.

If you look at it as just "washing" your hair, I think you'll get it.

I co-wash a lot more now, that I've BC'd (Big Chopped). I find that while in the shower, I'll pump up some condish in my palms, lather the TWA (teeny weeny afro), and then rinse. I'm doing it a lot more now, and it's not difficult at all.

HTH (Hope this Helps)! :yep:

and...thanks for explaining the abbreviations you used!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every morning when I get in the shower I wet my hair and add conditioner. By the end of my shower, I rinse and style in a bun. I do this everyday mostly for moisture and will occasionally use a mild protein conditioner when my hair might feel weak.

Once a week, I use a deep conditioner and sit under heat, then rinse and style in a bun.

I only use shampoo when I notice extreme build up (which does not happen often), when I am doing a color or extreme protein treatment (Aphogee) or when I am wearing my hair straightened. HTH.

I am relaxed and this has helped me tremendously with growth and retention because my hair desires lots and lots of moisture. Is it for everybody? I think it depends on the condition of the persons hair and their lifestyle.

I had a hard time with this concept too. Now I co-wash with seakelp conditioner, then aloe vera gel on scalp and hair. I seal with QP mango butter and airdry.

No prob, homie! I remembered when I first joined how lost I was with all the abbreviations, so I hoped that explaining would help you get a jump-start. Glad it did!
