I'm Getting A Weave - Should I Be Concerned? Appt Fri 3/20

So I decided to get a weave because I noticed my daily bunning has caused some breakage plus I wanted to change things up. I’ve only had one back in '02 so I don’t have a lot of experience.

So here’s my concern. My hair is longer and thicker now so I’m wondering will my hair be bulky under the full sew in? Is there a preferred way my hair should be braided to get the best results? The stylist said he plans to do the circular method and use a net. Is that the best or should I recommend something else.

I read some of the old weave threads over the weekend and I plan to tell him not to braid too tight. Is there anything else I should know?

Below are pics of my hair and the style he is going to do.

I'm natural but I straighten my hair to make it easier for him to braid (long story :wallbash: )

I think the vertical cornrows make for a flatter weave, but I'm only wearing my second one...

As you can see from my avatar though I have a lot of VERY thick hair, and the weave (see siggy) doesn't look bulky at all. You can only tell if you grab my head or the base of my neck b/c she had to double the cornrows back up towards my crown to braid all the hair.

You can check my fotki too for more pics.

HTH!

That's what I'm thinking too (vertical cornrows).

You have a lot of hair and there is no sign of bulk in your siggy. Very natural looking.

I justed checked out your fotki. Love your hair and protective styles!

Do you absolutely need to get a weave for protective styling?...People may not agree but weaves are not for women with hair like yours; Your hair is so thick and pretty; i don't think its worth the risk.

I think if he braids it thin enough you should have no problem with the circular pattern. MY hair is thick too, and that's what I usually get. Since he's using a net, that helps the weave lay even flatter.

BTW: you have gorgeous hair!

your hair is absolutely beautiful....your hair is like my short term goal...that being said; my hair girl always gives me vertical braids...in the past I had circular braids b.u.t it was rather bulky

Girl, do not scare me like that! No, I do thank you for the warning. I want to try it for the protective styling and also the ablity to wear hair out everyday. I've been bunning 5-6 days a week since I found LHCF a year ago and I'm bored. But truth is I could try other natural styles. All I do is bun, WNG or twistout.

I didn't expect much risk since I'm not going to allow him to braid too tight and I plan to wash/condition/moisturize my hair underneath. I would just hate for it to sit all high up on my head looking crazy.

Something to think about...

and thank you for the compliment

I'm just a little nervous because I met him this weekend for the first time and I got the impression he wasn't that experience. We actually started on Sat but had to abort because my hair was a tangled mess and I had to be somewhere 3 hrs later and there was no way he was gonna finish on time. But now that I've straighten my hair I think he can handle it.

Have them braid it straight back. It will lay flatter that way. Zig zag always turned out bulky for me.

Okay, it sounds like the consensus is to have him switch to straight back. Thank you all.

Glam: I'm glad you chimed in. I saw you up in a lot of the threads I was reading this weekend so I know you know a lot about it. And you do your own too right? If this one works for me I might make that my goal to be able to do my own when I feel like it.

Queen: Thank you. Your hair looks great too.

Oh and Ediese you have made AMAZING progress in your siggy!

ITA agree with the other ladies who said that vertical is the best. The one time that I ever had a circular pattern it was too bulky and when a circular pattern grown out it looks really unnatural, like a hair helmet.

Your hair is beautiful BTW.

(to the bolded) see exactly that's what I'm afraid of. You all are reinforcing what my gut was telling me.

:yep: The weave I'm wearing now I did myself but the last one I went to the salon. It really depends on what style I'm going for and how busy I am. It's really not that complicated once you learn how to do it though. Especially if you already know how to braid.

my hair is similar to your length, though our texture is different and your hair is probably "a wee bit thicker" than mine. :)

you'll be fine. i was sooo nervous before i got my first weave and i made some mistakes that caused a major set-back for my hair. as long as you avoid those mistakes, i think a weave is a wonderful protective style! and i disagree with Dommo, weaves are a great protective style if you take care of them properly. they're even okay for women with long, thick hair!!! :)

some tips that have helped me recover after set-back: don't leave it in longer than 10 weeks! and when its close to take down time (like a few days out) i start oiling in between the braids with an applicator bottle with a slim tip, to make sure i can oil between the braids. it makes for a smoother take down process. and please make sure they TAKE YOUR HAIR DOWN GENTLY when they do remove it!!! that was where/when 99% of my damage and breakage occured!

other than that, some LHCFers use applicator bottles to apply shampoo and condish between the braids during regular washes too. i did not do that, but if you want to that's fine. if you are gentle with it and gentle with your own hair, it is a great protective style! hth

hopefully you can post some pics!

Personally, like a few of the other ladies I believe you'll be fine. I've been wearing sew-ins for close to two years. Like wyldcurlz said it's all about the take down process, truly. Your hair is beautiful!! It won't hurt it at all, everything ain't for everybody. That's all!!!

HTH

Wyldcurlz and J-Moe thank you for the tips and encouragement.

I will try to post pics this weekend. I like the way it turned out. I got a lot of compliments and most people assumed I just cut bangs in my hair. I told several people what's really going on.

Okay, so now for the issues. My head is itching like crazy. What do you do to relieve it??? I bought some braid spray and also some oil that's in a nozzle bottle (suggested by a co-worker) but I still have daily issues with itching. Honestly I don't see lasting 6-8 weeks dealing with this :wallbash:. I'm thinking the next time I want to try a lace front. I still have a lot of research to do on that first.

Help!!
