I know, I know, I should know this by now.:rolleyes: But, because my hair was shorter, I didn't think it applied to me, just yet. But, I got my hair into a good sized ponytail today, and I am happy!:grin: So, to take breaks from sew ins, I wanted to start bunning with weave, to make it fuller. But what are the benefits of bunning, and should it be done on damp hair or what? Someone school me!

Bunning retains moisture in the hair because the ends are tucked away, and therefore not able to be damaged or dried out from the air, manipulation, or rubbing on clothes.

I do buns on wet, damp, and dry hair. You have to know which is best for you. I prefer wet or damp, because they retain moisture throughout the day, however some people have reported that bunning damp or wet has caused breakage because the hair is so fragile when it's wet.

I believe SistaSlick has a great article on protective styling.

I do tension free buns, by using large open "V" hair pins. For me bunning keeps manipulation down, hence helping you retain more length. They also aid in helping to retain moisture to your ends, since they are not constantly rubbing against clothing. Also buns, are heat free hairstyles, No need for flat irons or blow dryers.

:yep::yep: ITA ..

I know there are a lot of threads on this as well, and I have read them, but I would like to know too because....

I am having a hard time finding (many) 4a/b's naturals who do this on a regular basis, that have APL and longer hair. I am thinking the reason for this is because of the tangles, and it doesn't last long because of the fuzzing around the edges, so the detriments may outweigh the benefits. However, I really don't know at this point.

I bun on wet hair just because it helps me get my hair tighter. My ends and all but the top layer of my hair stay moist all day and it helps me retain my length not to mention its low maintainance and doesn't require heat. Because of my job its got to be slick so I use Fruit of the Earth aloe vera gel to slick it back and Goody ouchless bands

My hair retained the most length when I was wearing a bun. Please be sure to not wear your bun tight, as your hair will pop, causing breakage. As long as you are tucking your ends under, you're fine. Personally, I just made a ponytail and then pinned the ends under. Very rarely did I wrap my hair around in a circle, but when I did, I'd secure it with a huge scrunchee.

Good post - I am sure I have enough hair to bun, but the ends dont seem to be long enough to do anything with.

I bun my hair all the time. The benefit for me is, that it helps me retain length. It is as all ladies said, a hair style that does not require air drying. I do a wet bun. Depending on how far post I am, it may be a sopping wet bun, or a damp bun only because it takes so long to detangle (+12 weeks post). When I bun, I use oucheless ruber bands, I make a braid, and I fold that braid under several times, or wrap it in a circle. It's a simple hair style that takes 5 minutes that you can air dry. That's a win/win to me :)

I been wet bunning for almost a year. I love it. I don't get any obvious breakage. I use the Goody Stay In Place hair bands. Its easy and quite simply. I love it. I also use the scarf method. I believe bunning helps with moisture retention and split free ends, since my ends are tucked or covered. I believe this is helping me to grow my length. But you have to fine what works for you.

This is what I do.

How do you get your hair pulled back into a bun and get it all secured when wet and natural? I have the same question how can I bun with 4a/b hair? It all sticks straight up and out when wet? I don't want to run a comb through it because it causes to much breakage. What about braiding in the front and bunning the back? Will this suffice and give the same results?

Are you ladies using a soft bristeled brush at all to smooth down the top? Please let me know, especially because I am many weeks post.

Bump... Bump... Bump...

Does bunning require a band to hold the hair? I ask b/c my hair does break if I put too much tension on it, like a seamless ponytail holder or a elastic headband.

Can anyone recommend a Youtube video of wet bunning?
