am just curious if food products work. was thinking it would not only be cheaper but very convenient.

what food products can you use on hair and with what results?

i love coconut milk, coconut oil.
you can also use olive oil, avocado, banana and im sure ill think of more later.

The only food product that I've tried that actually worked (at least judging by touch) was mayo mixed with a cheap conditioner (to kill scent).
My hair felt weird while it was on but after I rinsed it off it was the softest it's ever been with a dc. Most of the time I feel like conditioners/deep conditioners don't actually work on my hair.
Avocado and coconut milk didn't do anything at all for me.

Food products do work and I love them.

Angelicus, I think, loves mayo as a DC. I've never used it (I can't even look at it) but it seems like a great idea.

I do use the caramel treatment...bananas, honey, molasses, olive oil, wheat germ oil, acv....it's a great DC. Love love love the softness it provides. If you search for the thread "yum caramel" you'll be able to find the recipe...the best one was posted by Lucky's Mom.

I think Oooop2 (I think that's how you spell her username) does a banana/honey treatment often, like every couple of days. But you'd have to ask her because I don't think I have that info 100% correct.

I use coconut milk as a cowash. I buy the canned organic kind with the fewest preservatives. I just pour it on after I get my hair completely wet and then rinse it out at the end of my shower. Softens my hair and I think the protein gives a little strength. I think coconut milk has a lot of the same properties as coconut oil and it's cheap.

A lot of people love honey, either in their dc or as a final rinse mixed with something else. It's a humectant and a moisturizer. A dc of honey and olive oil is great. Olive oil provides a lot of moisture (which is weird because it's an oil) and it's one of few oils that can actually enter the hair shaft. Great for sealing hair or as part of a DC.

Apple Cider Vinegar (acv) is used as a final rinse usually. It makes the cuticles flat and seals them shut, which helps lessen tangles and keeps your strands from feeling like velcro. You should dilute it a lot though if you're going to use it. I know that others also use it as a clarifier because it helps to remove build up. It can't remove everything in commercial products but it's fine if you use kitchen stuff.

Tea rinsing has become very popular lately. Apparently the caffeine is supposed to help extend the growth phase and decrease shedding. And depending on the type of tea (ex: nettle, rosemary, sage, horsetail) it may help with growth and strength as well. I know Muffin posted about doing a green tea, honey, and lemon final rinse.

JustKiya posted a finding a while back about adding salt to conditioner. There were a couple long threads about it. People reported that it really helped soften their hair and made detangling easier.

Yogurt (full fat, plain) is great as a protein treatment. Also if you mix it with lemon it's supposed to be a natural relaxer (because of the acids). Naturalgurl uses it a lot. You should check her fotki for other natural ingredients because that's all she uses. Coconut milk and lime mixed is also used as a sort of natural relaxer, but it seems as if people have gotten better results with yogurt/lemon and yogurt is much easier to deal with.

Oh and baking soda. I use it as shampoo (it's the only one I have). Mix with water and pour on, let it soak in, scrub, and rinse out. Or you can mix it in your conditioner for a cleansing conditioner wash.

I can't think of anymore at the moment but if I do I'll come back. Also, there are a lot of great ideas in the natural living forum.

I've had success with:

-coconut milk
-EVOO/EVCO
-Honey
-Eggs and/or mayo

I think I'm just going to stick with these for now, but I may try the ACV rinse once more to make sure its effective

great info!!!!! thanks!

I've had really nice results with honey. The only thing to keep in mind is that it will slightly lighten the hair.
