What product made the difference?

I will offically say PROTEIN has helped me. I'm sure most of you know that already
I'm relaxed
Joico kpak, Duotex, emergencee, and my mane and tail mixture ROCKS :yep::yep::yep::yep:

I'm currently a texlaxed kinda gal... I just deep condition all the time, rotating between protein and moisture.

Honestly that deep conditioning every other day or as close to it as possible has maintained my hairs condition to fabulosity. So when it was breaking, I just start dc'ing every other day and within a few days, it's all good.:yep:

What's working for me is cowashing every day or every other day - I'm not using a daily moisturizer - I seal my ends with oil, and when I would be due to moisturize I just CW again.

I'm natural. When I experience breakage, I modify my techniques.
I will usually trim and get individual braids for 2 months to give my hair a rest. And recently I started washing and drying my hair in sections.

A garlic treatment did it for me. My moisture/protein is relatively balanced so when I couldn't figure out what was going on, I resorted to EVOO and garlic.

Stopped the breakage (and shedding) immediately!

I had braids. I did not get my hair tied up at night. Before the braids my hair had grown quite a bit. oh misread the OP. sorry. I am reading to take notes since I have breakage.

I would say Protein and Moisture! But I picked protein.

I have virtually no shedding. I would lend that hand out to Both, I feel they both lend something important to your hair.

I just started CO-Washing and I love the softness in my hair! Once a week will do!

So how were you wearing your hair?

I have recently found that cornrows and a carrot oil concoction I made is helping a bit with breakage. I still get a little bit but not as much.

I'm relaxed, and I use MT on my scalp and as an occasional DC. I also use Aphogee products as needed, and the other day I tried NTM Deep Recovery Hair Mask...love it! I am seeing a lot less breakage since I started using protein on the regular.

I use different protein conditioners (often) and in a rolling rotation!! I have come to realize (Thanks Patricia/Artemis)that my hair needs protein at least twice a week, however I don't leave it in for extended amounts of time and always follow up with a moisturizing dc unless it is a protein treatment with slip...i.e. PM Super Strong Treatment.....

I would always use protein (at least once a week) but I concentrate more on my roots versus the ends ..now it is vice versa and the breakage has stopped and I am retaining my length as my hair is baby fine....

Sorry so wordy!

I still have breakage.... HELP!! AHH! lol.:lachen:

I think I need more moisture, but I also have to be sure not to decrease my protein as well....wouldn't wana be off balance AGAIN!

For my breakage, I started using Motions CPR as a prepoo at every wash. It worked wonders for my hair. I also made sure to get a really good moisturizing conditioner to deep condition with. For me, the best is Joico Moisture Recovery Balm. In between, I wash with Aveda DR shampoo. No more breakage. :yep:

I learned that I need to deep condition with protein instead of moisture because I moisturize my hair everyday or twice a day.

Deep condition with protein immediately followed porosity control, and then a deep condition with moisture right after -both with heat.

I did not vote because I always do both - always both.

I voted protein. I use the Aphogee 2 step, but I've read so much about the Aphogee 2 min reconstructor, that I think I'll get that. The protein really helped with the breakage, and helped me stretch to 7 weeks post (not much for the pro-stretchers). I also bought the Joico Kpak and can't wait to try it. The other day I was reading about porosity balance (thanks newflowers) so that 's also next when I relax to see how my hair reacts to it.

DC'ing at least once a week. Plus I learned how to properly moisturize my hair in between washes and that means a water-based moisturizer followed by an oil to seal it in

I have a question. I'm recently out of braids too and have ALOT of breakage and shedding. Is using protien more than once a month too much? Sorry to glom on to another's post.

Maybe someone already said this...but you have to know why you are breaking before you address the problem:

Too dry?
Too much moisture?

Both can cause breakage from what I have learned here.

Someone mentioned clarifying first. I agree. Then wet test a strand or two in different places on your head. If your hair snaps quickly with no stretching, you need moisture. It's too dry.

If it stretches a looong way and then breaks you need protein. It's not strong enough.

If it does a normal stretch and bounces back or breaks after that little stretch (which normal, healthy hair will do), then your hair is probably healthy but has some porosity issues who can lead to breakage. The cuticle may not be closed enough, thus leading to weakened hair and breakage.

Roux Porosity Control is ALWAYS wonderful as a final step to make sure the cuticle is sealed and you keep whatever progress you have made in rectifying the problem. I can't find it here in the UK, and I have looked for it, but it's probably the reason my hair never broke or shed in the US. I used it because my mom gave it to me and it smelled good. I didn't know it was exceptionally good for my hair. Shame...:nono:

Someone please correct me if I wrote wrong info.

I hope this is helpful...

This is the simplest and clearest identification description I've seen. "breaks fast=dry, stretches then breaks=need protien, otherwise attack porosity.
I'm almost sure I have to cut away the damaged hair first. Otherwise it seems pretty strong and healthy.
Question: Is losing approx 100 strands of long and short (pieces) too much for natural hair. That's what I lose every 2-3 days when I GENTLY reposition my bun and/or cowash?
