ok i know some of you ladies love coconut milk and use it often. i just started using it and i love it too, esp. for my mom and dad's hair.
any way on the can it says must be used in two days after opening it.

so if i mix it with aloe vera, honey, oils or whatever will that preserve it longer or do i still have to throw it out?

You need to freeze any leftover portions immediately - if you are not using it right away.

i mixed mine with casto oil and honey and did a pre poo with it but next time i may try it as a deep conditioner and/or 3-5 minute rinse

I use my coconut milk as a conditioner/rinse. After I wash my hair (baking soda/water) I just pour the whole can over my head (I really only need like half but the rest goes on my skin, which is great) and let it sit while I shower. I rinse it out at the end.

Its also yummy when mixed w/avocado, honey, EVOO, EVCO. Sometimes I add a squirt of mayo or cheapie condish and use it as a prepoo. My hair loves this treatment. I agree w/the others who say you can freeze the leftover milk. I pour it into a freezer bag, label and stick in the freezer door.

I made some fresh the other day well at least what I think it is. I took one young coconut(found it at whole foods) and a pack of dried organic unsweetened coconut chips. Cracked the coconut put the juice in a blender(after I strained it of course) scooped the coconut meat out, it is NOTHING like the brown coconuts. This was creamy like a custard and it was so good I ate maybe a teaspoon of it by itself and naturally sweet yummy. Anyways put that in the blender, added about 5 oz of chips and about a cup and a half of boiling water. Blended it up really fine, and then strained the mixture three times with one of those mesh strainers using a spoon to press everything out. And then put it in a jug I had. Its so cool too, 3/4 of the mixture is really thick and rises to the top (its white) and then the other part is the water. Just like probably in a can. I know this seems like a lot of work but it was so worth it to me. My kids drank half of it though! Oh yeah this made 46 ounces of milk.

I wonder if I could just use this part? That would be great, especially since it's creamy. What does a young coconut look like compared to the brown hairy ones?

Anybody just used the creamy part straight on their hair? or mixed it with the coconut juice and then used it?

These are exactly the ones that I found by the fruit, in ice. You probably could use it just like that. It was hard not to want to eat it all though, its just sooo good.

I thought those were just regular coconuts with the outside cut off LOL. Well, now I know.

Thanks to searching for this pic, I found instructions for making the milk and I wasn't too far off. Thats good common sense. :lachen:

No more canned coconut milk for me thanks to this recipe. One more way to cut out the crap (preservatives, cans). I wonder if there are locally grown coconuts, lol, I doubt it. Anyway, this way I'll be able to make it as creamy/thick as I want it to be as long as I use less of the coconut water. Thanks for this!
