While in the Indian Market a while ago, I bought some Dabur Chyawanprash paste. My market boyfriend told me it was really good stuff. I read on the label that it can be mixed in water or milk or spread on bread and crackers. While I plan to use this internally, I was actually thinking of mixing it in water and pouring over my hair :look:. I was online trying to find more info about it and found this:

"The holistic traditional formula of chyawanprash improves skin complexion, glow and fights dermal bacterial infection. It promotes hair growth and helps absorption of calcium resulting in strong bones and teeth. It is especially good for alleviating cough and asthma. The anti-oxidant properties of the tonic act against the ageing process and maintain youthfulness. Chyawanprash enhances fertility, keeps menstruation regular and helps to overcome difficulties in conception. It also improves muscle tone by enhancing protein synthesis effectively."

The main ingredients:
Amla
Ashwagandha
Pippali
Kesar
Guduchi

Karkatsringi
Shatavari
Bala/ Vidarikand

Thoughts??

So, its something to eat? Did he say that it would work in the hair at all?

I'm full of questions, I know:lachen:

It is something to eat. I didn't ask him if I could use it in my hair, I only thought of that after reading the ingredients :look:. I'll have to post all of them when I get home. I haven't even removed the foil seal and I can smell it...it's very pungent.

I'll post an update once I try it. Girl, after my first time in that store, he became my unofficial boo lol. He always takes care of me . He even gives me movies to watch and stuff. I got to watch Slumdog Millionaire in to comfort of my own bedroom :lachen:

I need to get me an unofficial boo that can hook me up too
However, the place I go to is mainly run by ladies :ohwell:
I don't need THAT kind of boo :lachen:

Nah, I wouldn't want that kind of boo either . He's so sweet, bless his heart lol.

ETA: darn it, I forgot to list the ingredients last night (it's a LONG list of stuff :ohwell:) I'll do it tonight. I'm gonna taste it tonight too :look:. Wish me luck.

I have it at home but it is not easy to eat. It is very thick and has a sweet/sour/pungent taste, but it is supposed to be very good for you. It has over 40 herbs. You will find alot of information if you google chyawanaprash.

Googled it and this product is going on my wish list! I definitely think you can put it in your hair: honey and ghee are the 3rd and 4th ingredients/amla is the first!

How to make ghee (clarified butter) at home

Materials: 1 pound unsalted butter (organic if available), a large sieve, 4 sheets of cheesecloth or muslin, a dry heavy-bottomed deep pot, a clean dry pot to hold the finished ghee, a clean 1-pound glass jar with lid.
Step 1. Melt the butter over low heat gradually in the heavy-bottomed pot. Do not stir.
Step 2. Over low heat, cook the melted butter until it is a clear golden liquid. It may bubble some, and a foam may form on top, but if you have a deep pot it won't boil over. Golden or light brown solids will form and may settle at bottom. You can skim off and discard thick foam if you like.
Step 3. Remove from heat while the liquid is a clear gold. A darker color means overdone ghee.
Step 4. Line the sieve with the 4 sheets of cheesecloth and place over the clean dry pot. While still hot, carefully strain the ghee through the cheesecloth-lined sieve into a clean, dry pot.
Step 5. Transferthe strained ghee carefully into the clean jar and shut tightly.
Note: Ghee at room temperature looks semi-solid. Ghee does not need to be refrigerated. Always use a clean utensil to scoop out ghee for use.

your hair and your tummy will enjoy!

What did it taste like?

What did it taste like?
I love Indian food, but I could NOT bring myself to put this in my mouth :lachen:. This is clearly an acquired taste/smell type thing. I don't know what made me want to try it, I was just walking past and felt "drawn" to it. After I read the ingredients and saw the price, I just took it home with me. I'm going to try ingesting it again in some hot water. Maybe I'll be able to stand it if I treat it as a tea. I'm going to try it as a hair paste or rinse (haven't decided which one yet) tonight.

Hmmm... sounds like it might be good for health.

Chyawan Ingredients
 • Amla :- Amla Fruit is rich in Vitamin C and Pectin. Tannins present in it retard the oxidation of Vitamin C. It is well known fact that pectin decreases Serum Cholesterol in human beings. It inhibits Platelets aggregation and lowers cholesterol levels. It is a tonic, has a haematinic and lipalytic function useful in Scurvy and Jaundice, prevents Indigestion and controls acidity as well as it’s a natural source of anti-ageing. It is one of the supplements used in hyperacidity and Liver disorders. It stops premature graying or hair-loss encourages nail and hair growth, improves eye-sight, cleanses the mouth, and nourishes the teeth, bones. Cleanses the intestine and regulates blood sugar.
 • Ashwagandha :- It modulates body functionality so as to control stress and regulate immunity.
 • Pippali :- It helps in cough and other respiratory problems and also strengthens lungs functions.
 • Kesar :- It energises the body and also makes the skin look radiant.
 • Guduchi :- It makes us strongers both physically and mentally. It also has astringent properties which rejuvenates our immune system.
 • Karkatsringi :- It beneficial for recurrent cough and cold.
 • Satavari :- It’s helps to promote general health and increases stamina. It improves itelligence and it very useful in improving eyesight.
 • Bala/ Vidarikand :- It helps to fight general weakness and gives strength and stamina.

I found this too:
In my experience, the first thing that happens with use of Chyawanprash is that assimilation of nutrients is greatly improved, and the evidence for this is that people whose hair tends to fall out, especially after shampooing, find that their hair no longer falls out and that it becomes thicker and more its natural color. ^^^ thanks for this info!

Your description is exactly what I read when I googled it. I tried again tonight and I just can't bring myself to eat this. I'm scared it'll be kinda slimy/greasy.

I did dissolve some in mineral water and used it as a rinse. This stuff is thick and looks like sludge so it took a while for it to blend in the water. I poured it over pre-oiled hair and let it sit for a few minutes while in the shower. I rinsed and it was soft. It seems promising, but I wanna give it a few more tries before I give it a thumbs up. Ironically, it doesn't smell so bad on my hair. I could smell the cinnamon, sandalwood and raisins; it was a kindy spicy scent. I'm air drying so we'll see what I'm looking like in the morning.

Okay, it's morning (obviously ) and my hair is soft, yet fro-ish. After cowashing and stuff, I used MHC Coconut Milk Hair Moisturizer, Afroveda Whipped Shea-Amla Butter to detangle and sealed w/H2H End All. Like I said, I'm going to try it a few more times a few different ways before I give an official thumbs up or down.

I'm still going to TRY to eat this stuff. The health benefits just seem to good to pass up...I just hope it doesn't taste like poison:drunk2:. Looking at it, it reminds me of Vegemite.

Hmmmm... I been thinking about this product for awhile. I hope someone can describe the taste. I want to take it for my over all health.

Why don't you mention or tag OP. Maybe she can help. I'm curious to know if she did get round to eating it.

ETA, I'm so nosey, I'll do it for you.

Hey Eisani did you ever get to try it? What did it taste like? Some very nosey sistas wanna know

I didn't know how to tag at first, but now I do. ( Only at the top where it says tag.) Thanks for tagging Eisani.

I finally got around to tasting it and that stuff is still in the back of my pantry  I couldn't do it. I dont think I tried it again on my hair, but since I'm going back to an ayurvedic routine, I'll be sure to pull it out and revisit.
