I've never straightened since I started taking care of my hair in early 2007 BUT I think they might say the following:

DC often (every week) and if needed protein treatment for the moisture=protein balance
They use a heat protectant, CHI, IC...
Properly moisturized hair
Limit the amount of times you use heat
using low setting on a flat iron
skip a blow dryer and air-dry and then flat iron
Roller setting
Ponytail setting
Do not straighten dirty hair
Some folks here use shea butter ( a lil' before heat)
Some swear by the steam flat iron that purports to moisturize as it straightens

That's all I've got so far....

It's mostly in the prep for me.
Overnight pre-poo w/ oils
Clarify
Protein treatment (Emergencee/ Aphogee 2min)
Steam w/ moisturizing DC
Detangle well
Leave in, heat protectant on damp hair
PinkSkates Tension blow dry method
Low flat iron temp in very small sections.

Saran Wrap w/ a little EVCO or Jojoba if it's not as straight as I'd like....That's it.

I'd say the protein, steam and small sections are my biggest tips.

I agree with all of the above. I just found out last week that a new secret for me is to moisturize after deep conditioning and apply the heat protectant over whatever moisturizer I use. It made my straightened hair really bouncy.

I would look at PinkSkates method!!!

She is the Queen...:worship2:

I use coconut milk and Lime, Steam with moisture for post poo....USE Sabino Moisture Block

and have excellent results.

yes she is really inspiring me to try it the natural way. I get tired of feeling like I'm abusing my hair and scalp by putting it thruogh such stress all the time

this is kind of what i do now with my relaxed hair. I hope to keep doing this during some sort of transition/experimental period to see how my natural hair will respond.

My roller-flat iron method

I laways rollerset and DC with heat before I flat iron :)

Ditto. For me it's rollersetting instead of blowdrying. Rollersetting gets my hair straighter and gives it a silkier appearance, which allows me to use a lower heat setting on my flat iron.

Subscribing to this thread. I'm adding to my natural education. My first attempt to straiten will be on Friday when I'll be 3 month BC. Hopefully I'll be able to get pics and post them. If I can learn other styles, I won't feel so bad for not being able to braid.

I use heat on my hair. The trick is just to not turn it up too high. I've never had any problems with direct heat in the past 2.5 years.

Awwwww...thank you SammyJ!
AJJ, I felt the same way many years ago when I said no more relaxers near my scalp!
My regimen and how I heat prep my hair is in the FOTM section.

Yep - The blow Dryer is just too drying for me. Of course I spent like 150 bucks on it...:rolleyes: and I don't use it.
Rollersetting is really great.

What's your secret?

I honestly think my hair can take a lot of heat. My old stylist told me that, and I didn't pay it any mind, but I transitioned for a year by flat ironing twice a month and had no damage.

I always use heat protectant, and I deep condition every post flat-iron wash (I did a protein treatment last time).

I have rollerset and blowdried, and the blowdryer gives me better results. :yep:
