Do you let stylists use more oil/grease/moisturizer than you use normally?

I went to a new salon on Friday and was relatively pleased with the outcome...
My hair was based VERY thoroughly and after my relaxer and neutralizer I was DC'ed for about 30minutes (my most recent stylist has been skipping this step). I'd scratched before my relaxer and so a little spot burned, they offered me SeaBreeze to prevent bumps. I was roller set on orange rollers (not magnetic) and my stylist used a lot of blue setting lotion---ALOT...and then overlaid it was hair spray (Mizani Oil I believe). That was my least favorite part, I have been doing my sets with water, leave-in and oil (sheen or olive). When dry the assistant "greased" my scalp (using something light by Design Essentials). My hair was then sprayed with oil again, finger combed, and Paddle Brushed into a wrap, then gently brushed to smooth. My style was simple: RollerSet, then wrap it up (I didn't have anywhere to go).

I welcomed some of the oil because it is freezing actually below freezing here but I felt like that was too much. I also didn't like all that setting lotion and next time will probably ask for just alot of water. (All my stylists have seemed to really like oil sheen)

They seemed more focused on the actual wrap looking pretty, not the next day results. I'm in protective styles but if I actually did want to wear my hair down there would be ALOT of oily, shiny, weighed down hair and roller marks!

Questions (aside from the poll):
1)Am I the only one who thinks stylists seem to want to use a lot of oil/grease?
2) Is all of it necessary, I mean, am I "under-oiling/greasing" my hair when I do it myself?

Looking forward to all of your wonderful responses...:yep:

A stylist cannot read your mind.

If you want less oil/product whatever, you need to tell her.

Did you say anything while sitting in the chair?

I wouldn't let them put all that oil in my hair. My hair strands are thin and get weighed down very easily. I wouldn't let them use any type of bristle brush on my edges either!!... so fragile lol:nono:

Aside from relaxer instructions (do edges last, etc), and no heat, I like to first see what a stylists natural inclinations are...I have found that sometimes I learn a lot this way and stumble upon new products/techniques etc.

When I go to the stylist I always ask what products they plan on using on my hair and then I tell them what can and cannot be put on my hair...For so many years I was always complacent and not saying anything, then going home after getting a relaxer, re-washing my hair and starting over. Got tired of paying all that money and not being happy when I walked out.

Just like another poster said, you have to tell the stylist what you want. If you don't want that much oil on your hair, you will need to tell them because they may have clients that like all that oil.

My experience has been the opposite...my hair NEEDS a few drops of oil (just a few!!!)rubbed in after styling, or else it is so fine it is floating away!...every time I come home from a salon I have to do this myself.

Over the years I've learned it just doesn't take all of that. Usually I rollerset with a leave in, some serum and I spray a little oil sheen before I get under the dryer. Voila! I look beautiful and healthy after it is fully dry. I think they just don't want you to be disatisfied when walking out of the shop. They make it look beautiful when you leave the shop...but the next day you look a HAM!! Then You'll come back :look:

The different stylists I went to up North, they were more focused on making it shiny, and making sure it moved.

The stylist I went to down here, focused on making my hair as greasy and shiny as possible.

LOL:lachen:

I have had those 2 experiences....not quite with the North/South but with the MidWest/East Coast...1 wanted it to move so attacked me with Marcel Irons and Spritz, and now well....They always have out some oil and "light" grease....
