Deep Conditioning? I really don't like it, it does nothing for my hair. I've tried so many deep conditioners and they all do the same thing for me, nothing.
Am I alone?

Girl i almost fell out of my chair after reading that statement! Just joking.:lachen:I'm sorry deep conditioning doesn't work for you, i swear by it (it's the reason why my hair is so healthy). Are you PROPERLY deep conditioning? After i read an article i was so surprised i was doing it the wrong way.

I've tried doing it before shampooing, after shampooing, after shampooing and conditioning, just deep conditioning, ACV then deep conditioning lol everything. Do you have a link for that article?

Well it's from another site but i'll go ahead and post it.
I think alot of ladies will hopefully benefit from it.

Maybe it's the kind of DC you are using and the way you DC. Do you DC with heat or without heat? Do you use a protein or moisturizing DC or both? How long do you DC for? I also know that some ladies on this forum don't DC very often, maybe once a month. Maybe you could just spread out how often you DC.

HOW TO PROPERLY DEEP CONDITION:

Surprisingly, a lot of people do not know how to deep condition their hair properly. They say that they are applying the conditioner weekly but still suffer from dry hair and tangles. This note will provide you with the information your need to achieve soft, silky, manageable hair through proper deep conditioning.

Step One: Squeeze out Excess Moisture

After shampooing, use your hands to squeeze excess water from the hair. Using a towel, gently press out any remaining moisture. Refrain from rubbing, twisting or squeezing the towel around the hair. Your hair is extremely delicate when wet and rubbing the hair vigorously will only rough up the cuticle and damage the hair shaft. Look for towels with a smooth side as the tiny hooks in most towels may grab onto hair strands and pull them out.

Step Two: Apply Conditioner
Using your fingers, part the hair and apply conditioner from the top of the head to the bottom of the strands. If your scalp is easily irritated or if you go longer than 4 days between washing, avoid getting conditioner on the scalp. Some conditioner will leave a film which will irritate the scalp or cause the hair to smell after a few days. The only exception is a medicated conditioner which is intended to condition and remain on the scalp.
Use a wide tooth comb to distribute the product throughout the hair.

Step Three: Cover with a Plastic Cap

http://healthytextures.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/07/01/bld057288.jpg Twist the hair up and secure with a plastic clip. Avoid clips with sharp teeth or bobby pins, which will break wet fragile hair. I use a butterfly clip available at most drugstores. Cover with a thin plastic cap or saran wrap. Deep condition with heat under a hood dryer for 20 minutes.

Alternative Deep Conditioning Methods

If you don’t have a hood dryer, there are a couple things you can do. One is to soak a hand towel in hot waterand use it to cover your hair. Then, place a plastic cap over the wet towel to retain the heat.
Or, you can cover your hair with the plastic cap and then cover the cap with a dry towel placed in the dryer for a few minutes.
Lastly, if you don’t want to mess up any hot towels, you can put your conditioner in a bowl and pour hot water on top to make it nice and warm. Make sure the conditioner is not too hot for your scalp by testing it on your arm. Apply the warmed conditioner to your hair and cover with a plastic cap.

Step Four : Rinse and Style

After conditioning for 20 minutes, rinse out the product. If you wish to avoid getting back into the shower, you can rinse in the tub or over the sink. Just make sure you rinse thoroughly. I prefer just getting back into the shower as rinsing in the tub or over the sink has always produced a lot of tangles but it is your personal preference!
After rinsing, squeeze out the water using your hands and cover with a plastic cap. Proceed to style. Your hair should feel silky soft and manageable.

Even something as simple as applying the condition in sections and delicately squeezing out the excess water, i didn't know. I used to just apply the conditioner in the front of my hair and on the ends, never applying any to the middle. Also i used to try to deep condition on sopping wet hair!:perplexed

Or you can try DC'ing on dry hair. I do this method and it work wonders for me and no jumping in and out the shower.

This is what really made the difference to my DCs: how I applied the DC, use of heat and of course, what type of DC I used. I apply my DC like if was doing a retouch, section my hair the same way and apply from root to tip and always spend at least 30 mins under a heat cap. Try some of these tips and see if you notice a difference. You should be noting a difference in your hair with your DCing.

I've DC with heat and without. I don't see a difference with either. I sometimes use protein or moisturizing DC, like alternate. I've tried DCing for 2 mins, 5 mins, 10, 30, 45 and 1hr and still no difference lol. Yea I was thinking to just spread out how often I DC like every 2 weeks or every month.

How does your hair feel after it's dried? Do you airdry?

You may not notice the difference in your hair...maybe you havent found something you hair likes but if is a penetraiting condish is helping your hair health

It feels very dry. I mostly airdry but sometimes I rollerset.

Now that is really interesting. It should not feel dry at all! Do you think that you may be using too much protein? That could produce a drying effect. I had that problem when I first started here. How often do you moisturise generally? It does sound as though you should be upping your moisture all round.

I am having this problem too. I do notice that my hair feels marvelous after a prepoo, but after DC... my hair feels dry as normal. I have been doing it on wet hair though, so I will towel dry (or t-shirt dry) first next time and see if that makes any difference.

I've been using Silk Elements Megasilk Moisture Treatment and my hair is still very dry :nono:. I moisturize everyday or every other day. Mannn I moisturize my hair so much.

Do you mix your conditioners? I have found that I get best results when I mix a proteinish con with a moisturizing con. First I coat my hair with say ORS replinishing pak or Aphogee 2 min. resconstructor, then I coat with a creamy moisturizing con like Joico Moisture Recovery, add a little more of the proteinish con, add a little hot water, put on cap, leave on for 1 hour or use heat for about 30 minutes. It also helps to clarify first too sometimes.

Hmm that's interesting, I've never tried that before. Wow thanks :yep:

It definitely works to deep condition with heat. Before I knew better many years ago, I used to just put the conditioner on damp hair and let set for a few minutes, then rinse.

I have definitely noticed a difference in DC'ing with heat vs. without heat. My only problem is that I hate sitting under a hot hooded dryer for extended periods of time.

Since I am natural, I conditioner wash my hair leaving a bit of conditioner on my hair to further protect it during the week.

Isn't petroleum a major ingredient of that product? If so that might be the culprit..

Maybe u can buy one of those micro cap heat turbans. www.Afrokinks.com sells them. All u do is microwave the gel packs then insert into the cap and you can move around and do what u need to do. The heat lasts for 25-30 mins, but I just keep it on for like an hour when I can. It makes DC a bit easier

How often do you clarify? Do a clarifying poo first, then DC. I remember the first time I did that -- WOW! It was as if it was the first time the DC actually REACHED my hair; the difference in the results was immediate; I was standing in the bathroom after I rinsed it out and said out loud "Now I see what all the fuss is about!"

I only use the Aveda DR as a conditioning treatment that I just put on for a few minutes after shampooing. I don't notice any difference from deep conditioning (or conditioning) otherwise, either.

HAHAHHA YEAH, I COULD USE THIS INFO TO. I'd learned not to do it on sopping wet hair, but i know for sure I have not been getting this conditoner properly into the middle of my hair even though my hair is fine. THANKS FOR THIS!!

I do however notice a difference when regularly dcing in the thickness, and health of my hair, and less problems detangling. Keep trying ladies, its worth it!!

Lol that's cute. I clarify at least once a month.
