Bantu knots....erm NEVER AGAIN!

Bantu knot guru checking in. Seriously, though, you probably did too many knots without enough product. Whenever I do knots on my hair (wet or dry), I do about 9 at the most, sometimes 6. Anything into the double digits is too much, IF you are looking for that wavy, loose look.

The first pic is of bantus done on wet hair. I had somewhere to be that night so I actually took the knots down BEFORE they were dry. I didn't get a back view pic of this look, but you can kinda get the idea (i hope).

The second pic was another wet set, but I waited for my hair to dry completely before I took them out. That was 9 knots (3 x 3 grid on head).

The last pic was a set done on dry hair, fresh after a relaxer. I think I did 6 knots.

Also, IMO bantu sets look best when you add some product to it, like leave in conditioner or moisturizer, along with some oil to seal. :yep: Hope that helps. I just don't want you to give up on the bantus! It really is a great style. One of my favorites.

Excellent tips. Subscribing.

OP: Sorry your set didn't come out right, but you had me rolling with your post.

Thanks bulldawg. I'm glad you posted this because bantu knots were OVER for me! I will try again, I really liked how yours turned out.

I love your set. I do bantu knots everyday, they're my go to style. I'm not relaxed so it comes out more like a curly fro. When I do the first set I do on wet hair and use something heavy like castor oil or shea butter, and I do about 12 knots. Then for the next few days I dampen my hair, add castor oil, and only do 5 knots.

Once you practice a few more times you'll be able to figure out what process works best for you. Oh and make sure to part your hair in the way you want it to fall when you take them out. It's easier that way.

Maybe it would have been better if you did twisted bantu knots. You do two starnded twists or braids the put it in the knot. But i never set them under the dryer so idk how they would turn out.

this might work as long as you don't put any kind of holding product in them, because when my hair was transitioning and longer I did two bantus at the top of my head just too see, they came out glorious, but then when I did my head for real I added some holding mouse, twisted them, bantu'd them up. When I took them out the next day, EXPLOSION, tightly tightly coiled hair that explodes when you try to finger comb.

And I did some on my now short and natural hair last night while wet, WORSE mistake ever, I had soo much frizz fuzz and breakage. My hair only likes bantus when my hair is washed, dryed and with shea butter for moisture, no holding products.....

Whoo that was funny! :lachen: I think the tamed down version with the headband and ponytail looked nice. :yep: I feel you though cuz me and BK don't get along on wet hair. I can maintain my rollerset hair that way though. :yep:

Girl........I was rollin when I saw this pic....too funny, I'm sorry that happen to you, but it don't look so bad though.....I never tried bantu knots......i don't know how to do them, but not bad IMO.

The pic in my siggy is generally how mine turn out. I only do it like a few weeks post relaxer though and I don't pick it out much - maybe separate them into 2 or 3 curls.

I like it pulled back in the headband or in the ponytail. Maybe try it on dry, straightened hair, thats only way they work for me...I have some pics of my bantu set in my fotki.

I agree with the other ladies that said it looked great with the headband. I've never done a bantu knot out, but I've seen some great results...yours included.

I agree with some of the other ladies. BantuKnot-outs come out better when the bantu knots on done on dry, straightened hair.

Hey, I kinda liked the first pic! You had a kind of Frederick Douglass look going on :lachen:
I'd better like it, because I just did my first bantu knots--without having seen this thread--and I might come out looking the same way! I did mine like this girl's and I'm hoping mine comes out this cute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpXst3FXGb8&feature=channel_page

I really like this, I'll definitely try it. Your hair is beautiful, bantu knots would come out great with your length

lol.......u are hilarious.......

dont like bantu knots that much either....i tried twisting first then bantu and i think it was ok.....

BUT i did a braid out the other day and later that evening put my hair into twisted bantu knots and it kept the style well...

I love bantu knots, they have definately helped while transitioning, but I haven' done them on wet hair. I usually start with dry hair and the results go from curly fro to wavy bob. Now it took some practice and like you the first time I did them I made sure I had no place to go the next day :lachen:

Wow I've actually never tried the braided bantu knot-out. BargainPrincess and babydimp make it look great! :yep:

My Bantu Knots always turn out great, if they get dry. My problem with Bantu knots is that they never get dry...well not never but I would be sitting under the dryer for 4 hours and then have to sleep on them. Too much.

Every time they look like a rollerset and the roots are always super straight.

Uggh. I hate bantu knots. I put my perimeter in bantu knots last night in hopes of stretching my naps out for blending with my half wig... and I look a HAM.

I'm bumping this for the girls who are thinking of trying these stupid knots... :stop: Don't do it!

I think bantu knots work better on shorter hair. I cut my hair 4rm a little lower than shoulder length to a shaved kelis look. before i cut my hair i did bantu knots and the ends are what kept me from wearing them outside. but as i was growing my hair out of the cut and it was about neck length I tried again and loved the little curls bantu knots gave me. So I jus think its the length that determines how good they come out.

They can look good on any length of hair if you know how to do them. :yep: I started doing them when I was shoulder length and I am now around arm-pit length and they turn out fine. Just like any other hairstyle it does take practice, though. And patience.

I hate bantu knot-outs on my natural hair. It never turns out right and I get major tangles. On my flat ironed hair it's a hit or miss.
