Ok ladies I need your help BIG time… Here goes, I’m new here, and I don’t understand any of the lingo on the board…. For example I have no idea what 4a or 1b or 2a is, so I don’t know how to list what type of hair I have… I mean with out a perm my natural hair is that thick and spongy stuff (note: I currently have a perm) with a brown to light brown tint.

Also I’m not sure of the correct length to list for myself at this time… The photos shown at the bottom & in my profile are of my current length. So ladies please help me figure out the LHCF lingo lol…. Thanks so much for your help with this.

p.s. I also need some help on what to use on my DRY BRITTLE hair thanks to this Winter weather...

As far as hair type, no one here would be able to tell without seeing your new growth. As far as length, you are shoulder-length.

Hello and welcome to the boards! Some people use the hair typing system (which isn't free from error/confusion) to classify their hair and to help them find their hair twin.

The typical chart goes from 1-4, with one being straight hair and 4 being the most highly textured/kinky. You can check here to see the different pics used in hair typing http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types.

From the pics you'd posted I'd say your length is probably shoulder length (SL) or collarbone, barely (CBL).

Check out the stickies at the top of this forum and under favorite stickies you can find the list of acronyms used.

I"m not sure what to suggest for your dry brittle hair issue. A lot of ladies here like (as well as myself) Ovation Cell Therapy (www.ovationhair.com)

Good luck!

Wow!!

Ladies I want to thank you so much I didn't think I would get such a fast response... I think I'm going to love it here.

Welcome! We need to see 2 or more inches of your new growth (natural, unaltered hair) to determine your hair type.

You look full SL to me.

In response to your brittle hair, what is your regimen and what products do you use?

To be very honest with you I DON'T really have one... I pretty much go with the flow, and I think that's what my problem is. I just started self perming, and that seems to be working out fine... I will go any where from 6 to 8 weeks with out a touch up... But in between that I really don't have a regimen, and the products I'm using right now are Garnier Fructis long and strong, and I take my skin, hair and, nail supplement... Oh and a Isoplus detangler....

Welcome! Don't worry about typing, SL, Weekly deep conditioner, castor oil to seal moisture, humidifier, baggy method.

They look fine to me. But, I'm not one for blunt ends (I think it looks unnatural)...and as long as they aren't obviously split/damaged then I think they're fine.

I agree. Your hair looks very healthy and beautiful. Your ends will fill out over time, but they look fine as they are.

For the dry hair, I'd recommend using more moisturizing hair lotions. My personal fave is Ultra Black Hair Lotion Creme Moisturizer by Cathy Howse, BB Oil Moisturizer hair lotion, or WEN cleansing conditioners (used for washing and conditioning but triples as a moisturizer) to moisturize with and seal with extra virgin olive oil (evoo), jojoba oil, coconut, almond oil, or any othe natural oil of your choice. there are other moisturizers out there, but I recommended these because I use and have great success with them.

I would also recommend bunning your hair after moisturizing and lightly sealing it in with oil. Protective styling is highly recommended during the harsh winter months as well. Baggying (putting a plastic bag secured over the moisturized bun overnight) helps to retain moisture pretty well. HTH (hope this helps).

Welcome!

Hair typing is to find out what type of curl pattern you have. Unless you are transitioning to natural I wouldn't give it too much attention. Curl typing helps figure out what types of products to use depending on your hair.

Here is the link for curl typing: http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types

Now the Ultra Black Hair moisturizer and WEN cleansing conditioners are bought online. UBH moisturizer can be bought from www.honeyfig.com and the WEN cleansing conditioners can be bought from www.qvc.com. Careful though, if you don't want the auto shipment, then make your purchase without it, okay? This is what I do. I like to order when I'm good and ready. Look for the set designed for African American hair (tea tree, fig and lavender fragrances) You don't have to get the set by the way, so you can purchase them singly. Interestingly enough, many of us get fantastic results from the WEN almond mint conditioner as well.

Dry Brittle Hiar.

Wash with Baking Soda, rinse with Apple Cider Vinegar, and DC with Organic Root Stimular Replenishing Pak.

Hi HH.

Welcome to the boards. I think you are starting form a really good place. Your hair is basically healthy. It may not be as moist as you want, but that can be fixed. Before you do anything, you might want to think about not becoming a pj (product junky) it is so easy to do when you are new and wanting to improve your hair's condition.

ITA (I totally agree), that you need a good moisturizer, and to seal it with a little oil. Wen, is an excellent conditioner that can be used as a DC (deep cond.), a rinse out, and a leave-in. If you need a less expensive alternative you can try Hair One from Sally's. I've found that for my hair, the best way to moisturize is to use a good leave-in and seal with oil or butter. I also use watered down rinse out conditioners as leave-ins.

One of the best things that you can do for your hair is get a good haircare regimen going. Here's mine:

1. Cleanse (shampoo or co-wash) 2x/week
2. Condition (instant 1x, and DC 2x) 3x/week
3. Moisturize daily
4. Low/no heat usage
5. Low manipulation
6. Protective stying
7. Protein Treatments as needed
8. Dust ends as needed

I hope this helps (HTH), and happy hair growing (HHG). :yep:

I have these Items in my home now... And using these will help me with my issues?

Well....

I had really dry hair. Especially my ends. Even after DC's my ends were still crunchy. I believe it was due to my experiment with oils. This went on for a few weeks.

I than washed with baking soda. My hair wasn't silky smooth or anything but it was clean and wasn't stripped like how it is with shampoos. My hair was also at a high PH since this is a base above 7 and hair likes to be at about 4.5 to 5.5 or so the ACV is acidic and brings it closer to the hairs ideal ph.

After I poured the ACV (1tablespoon ACV to 2-3 cups of water....used about 9 cups) and let that sit for like 40 minutes my hair was SOOO SOFT! My ends felt hydrated. Now you probably don't have to leave it on that long, but I was busy. The ACV is a clarifier/chelater and got rid of everything that was on my hair blocking it from being hydrated. I did this in preparation for my DC.

I than rinsed and used the ORS Replenishing PAK and it was like BUTTA BABY. My hair was still really soft, hydrated, easily detangled, and shiney.

I've neglected it for about 2 days. I'm about to pay it some attention now. lol

But, it worked for me....

This step by step and play by play post was great... It gives me a game plan... Thank you so much for taking the time to do something like that for me.

:welcome:

HI! I reccomend looking for a STAPLE moisture condish... and doing steam treats. This will change your hair for the better.

Since you are relaxed, I am sure some of the Relaxed ladies can tell you more about the need( serious) need for protien as well.

Good luck!

if your hair is dry and brittle try drinking more water and take an omega supplement also in addition to what everyone else said.

This step by step and play by play post was great... It gives me a game plan... Thank you so much for taking the time to do something like that for me.

You are most welcome. Have fun taking care of your hair, and remember it is a journey and not a race. We all have to develop our own haircare regimen over time by paying attention to what our hair needs and learning what to do to meet those needs.

ITA with samanthajones regarding relaxed hair needing more protein, and I hope some relaxed ladies come in here and give you more tips about their protein requirements.

Thanks again ladies... I will do a search on relaxed hair threads... I am so hungry for information, but I know I should pace myself. I am currently searching for a nightly routine, and trying to find more info on protective styling. I like the idea of washing my hair then doing a braid down, but I don't know if that is protective styling lol...
