How often do you comb through your hair...
I'm transitioning and I'm thinking when I'm all natual I'll do it twice a week...
right now I'm six months post relaxer and it's starting to get harder to do...and I know it'll get tougher as the months go on....

Hmmm, I detangle my hair once a week when I wash. I can ONLY detangle my hair either when the water's running through it or with tons of conditioner in it, and I make sure to finger-comb first. I'm starting to think that even this is too frequent.

It really depends. If my hair is styled then I don't comb through it just pick it out with my fingers and when it's styled it only gets combed when it's washed, normally it's a serious detangling session too. Now if I'm washing and going I comb about once a week and finger comb when I'm cowashing which is about three times a week. HTH. Finger combing is great I suggest you do that and use a Shower comb when you cowash, I love that thing!!! Then detangle about once a week with tons of conditioner on your hair. I NEVER comb my hair dry unless it's straightened. if you are combing dry that could be why you are having issues because the natural hair probably is starting to take over.

I detangle a few times a week when wet bunning, and after I wash out styles that I've worn for days (twistouts, braidouts, etc.)

At least once a week. If I wear it straight I have to run a paddle brush through it once a day or my hair will tangle and break.

Much of the time my hair is in twists or puffs so combing only happens about twice a month when I detangle. I comb my hair either wet or drenched in conditioner.

I also found that I lose less hair when I comb starting from the ends.

I rarely comb my hair. It's usually in some "safe" do like twists or braids so I usually use my fingers when I undo to redo. The only time I use a comb is when I undo it all like when I plan to wear it out, which is rare.

I comb it once a week, the day of washing. Either detangling or when I style it. I may wear the same style for a week and then repeat the detangling again.

When I finish washing my hair I briefly detangle with a shower comb. WHen I am out of the shower I use coconut oil and hair lotion + the denman brush to get any loose hairs out and then style.

Not very often do I detangle because it is 99% of the time in a protective style of some sort.

But when I do I use the denman brush, lots of water and or conditioner. I start at the ends and work my way to the roots.

These are usually intense sessions particularly since I am a tenderheaded girl so me and detangling have always been mortal enemies! :lachen:

Once the United Nations of Hair Dentangling has met and determined that this process is mandatory all the leaders get together to determine, when, where and how.

When we are in agreement then the prescribe hair untensils are set on the counter or in the shower and a frustrating time is had by all!

This is a very huge production and it is not done very often. :perplexed:look:

But remember I am tenderheaded, very very tenderheaded, others may not have issue with this process at all. I am probably one of the few who don't really care about how much hair has shedded, my concern is how much pain and or discomfort will be delivered during the detangling process.

But seriously, for the most part I use my fingers to detangle when I am redoing protective styles such as twists and twists with extension hair.

Detangle once every 7-10 days with my Denman or a wide-tooth comb. If i'm wearing my hair out a lot, i'll do some finger-detangling in the shower when i co-wash.

i don't comb my hair

Me either. My hair is 4b and is a little bit below shoulder length stretched. I've discovered that combing my hair does little to nothing as far as preventing tangles and breakage is concerned--in fact, it only causes more. As far as detangling is concerned. I attack specific knots and clumps as I see them, preferably when my hair is wet with conditioner and oiled. For very kinky hair, I think the key is in prevention of tangles through protective styles. I actually don't do any protective styling really, and while I could probably get a few less knots that way, the ones I get aren't too bad overall.

Wow, Ladies. I'm not the OP but thank you for your helpful advice. I realize I've been combing much too often. Typically I comb 3x a wk, but I could really finger comb. Like many naturals, my hair only looks thick so this should be an easy change.

tell me more.....what do you do....

i really don't do anything. even when my hair was longer, i didn't comb it. i would pick it out sometimes. my hair doesn't need all of that. i just use my fingers to style/part my hair. i can create some really neat styles with my fingers. now if i was going to do cornrows, then a comb would come into play, just to make sure my parts are precise. when i wear puffs i use a boar bristle brush to smooth down my edges. i have a palm size one, so i use the sides of the brush to smooth.

i also keep my hair very moisturized.

It depends on how it's styled. The longest I've gone without any kind of detangling was a month. I guess I average once every 7-10 days.

I'm transitioning as well. I haven't done the BC so my ends are straing but not bone straight. I usually wash one a week and detangle then wehn I do a roller et. This usually lasts a couple days and then I bun for the rest of the time until I wash. Boring but I have little free time to be really bothered right now. I want to experience with twistouts and braid outs. I have no I dea when I will do a BC but I hav ebeen trimming with eash wash, its quite addictive. :)

My goal is to brush my hair once a week (in twists after a deep condition while in the shower and after finger combing first). I rarely/never use a comb.

Suffice it to say that it's already been 10 days this week, and not a detangling session in sight.

Also a lot of people have been saying the denman brushes are the bomb for detangling. I don't have one, I've looked at a few stores but haven't seen any. It suppose to do everything from make natural curls more lively to remove shed hair. I think you use it on wet hair that has been detangled with shower comb. HTH

Every once in awhile, I'll comb my hair, but only when doing twists/braids or parts. I mainly comb when I'm doing individual small sections of hair then twist/braid it up, to remove any tangles that may be.

In the shower, I used to comb all the time to detangle, but ever since getting hipped to the denman brush I am always using that and sometimes still use my detangling comb. Now if I'm in the shower and reach out for the denman, sometimes it's not in it's usual place so I'm SOL cuz I just KNOW my lil buggers swiped it to do their dolls hair!!:lachen:

I use my fingers to detangle as needed.

It's funny the OP posted this yesterday because yesterday my co-worker asked me if I ever combed my hair after I complained my twist-outs weren't laying flat. I don't think it would have bothered me if that ever wasn't in there.

Ive combed my hair once this year. I just detangle with my fingers when my hair is soaking wet and full of product. Though I only do that once a month at the very least.

**southern bella, your twists in the picture in this post is my next goal. I love them ;)**
