Can someone tell me where I can order Shea butter?

I was blessed to get a jar from Daayiah (sp?) when I first joined LHCF and I really like it.

TIA

I was gonna say from nature with love too or african stores in your area if you have them. I have noticed that my BSS in my area are carrying it too. You should try there also.

I buy my from butter-n-bars.com I originally ordered it from there website, but found their ebay store a minute later after ordering from the site. The ebay store had it about three dollars cheaper. When I asked them to cancel the order, they kindly refunded me the difference between the ebay store and the website. They are very flexible.

Unrefined seems to be the way to go. You get it in its raw form with all the goodness in it.

I used to buy it from Nature With Love but for the past 2 years I buy it at MMS. Their prices are better and I like the quality. They have both un-refined and refined. Plus they also have shea oil...I haven't tried that yet, but plan on it. Here's the link -

Have you used any other butters from them?

I am planning on ordering the olive butter (sounds really good) today. I'll let you know how I like it when I do. I order all my oils from there. I have a shea butter and oils recipe I posted on LHCF a long time ago.

I do need some recipes....need to do a search. The shea butter that was sent to me as a gift, I just use it plain, seal it w/ oil. It only takes a little.

Steph's Note--
Keep in mind Karen has formulated this recipe in ounces, it makes just shy of 63 ounces of cream. If you prefer to make smaller batches, you'll need to convert it to grams. If you need help, contact us or use the Measurement Convertor on our website.
Ingredients:

Instructions:

Instructions- Heat the oils, butters, and waxes on low until everything has melted, and cool to about 140°F. Heat the aloe (I buy the stuff you can drink) and water to about 140°F as well. Put the oils into a large mixing bowl and start mixing on slow. Slowly add the water and aloe mixture and keep mixing on low. Gradually increase mixing speed until you're on high, and mix, mix, mix, until the bowl feels about body temp., then add your Germaben II and essential oils. (I chose these for their healing and skin friendly properties, and everyone so far has commented on how good it smells). This makes a lot of cream, so be sure you have plenty of containers on hand!

Notes & Comments:

Thanks Karen for sharing this great formula with us.""

Have you ordered their coconut oil before? If so, is it refined or unrefined?

I have , they have a few different kinds and I never understood the difference, The one I got I loved, but NOTHING compares to Extra Virgin Organic Coconut oil!

I like unrefined shea butter, which is the yellow colored one.

Interesting. I was wondering why the on I get at the Farmers market is yellow.
Is this true for all shea butters? If it's yellow, it's definately unrefined.
I wanted to whip some up with fragrance and want to get the best kind.

Just found this info.
I guess I'll get the tan unrefined one.

Yeah apparently it does so it seems...

"It should be noted that the process used to refine shea butter strips it of most of it's positive properties. In order to make the shea white it must be bleached which also distroys all of the vitamin A and E. Unless there is a specific reason to need 'pure' shea, unrefined or 'raw' shea butter is far and above a better product.

"When shea butter is extracted with the toxic petroleum-based chemical “hexane”, traces of the solvent may remain in the butter. Currently, the market is saturated with butters extracted with hexane. This process turns the butter a whitish color and takes out the distinctive natural odor – which provides a good way to detect if the product is processed. However, sometimes leftover shea butter from the expeller-press method is mixed in with the solvent method and sold as "unrefined shea butter". To get the best benefits from shea butter’s inherent healing properties, it’s important to use a source that has third-party verification of its purity, such as the “USDA Organic Certified” seal.

In the refinement process, shea butter is exposed to heat of up to 270 degrees in order to remove its characteristic nutty smell, and chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate are mixed in and added to the shea butter. When shea butter is bleached, it goes through an acid treated filter at high temperatures. These actions remove the natural essential fatty acids, as well as valuable proteins and minerals."

The white version is considered the refined version and the yellow is considered the yellow version.

Unrefined shea butter is sometimes referred to as white because of the contrast in color with the "yellow" shea butter. Yes shea butter that is white as a crayon is ultra refined or refined shea butter, a shea butter that is ivory or more of a tannish white is the color of unrefined shea butter. "yellow" shea butter gets its color from either adding palm oil to it or during its extracting process a plant root is used to achieve the color.
