So I'm walking out to go to work today and I see my neighbor and her daughter (my dd's bff who has BEAUTIFUL 3b/c curls) coming down to the bus stop and I notice the little girl is hiding. So I'm like, HEY, don't...then I saw her and her hair was straight. OK, I figured she pressed it. She seems so self-consious so I was like, "your hair looks pretty, did you straighten it" and her mama (who is Italian and her dad is black) said, "yeah, I relaxed it." Everything just stopped...I said, "you wa?" :look: She was like, "yeah, it was so dry and I got some new products, Minazi (Mizani) and I'm happy about my decision." Clearly a signal to say, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!:perplexed So I didn't say anything but I was heartbroken. She's FIVE and her hair was BEAUTIFUL! I always tried to help her and I understand I'm not the one that has to take care of it but DANG! I don't want to be judgmental at all but five? Isn't that a little too early to even CONSIDER putting chemicals on your child's head?

She did what she thought was best for her daughter and for her. Five is not to young IMO if the parent knows what shes doing.

Everyone not going to agree and most are prob going to bash this woman but it's her daughter.

But hey, if the mother didn't want to deal with her child's curly hair then she is within her rights to do whatever she feels is necessary.:rolleyes:
 
I guess that's the problem, she doesn't know what she's doing. I offered to help, I'm going to introduce her to my cousin's (ya'll), and hopefully it won't turn out bad.
 
I think thats too early but, thats JMO...that lady has to learn like everyone else does i suppose...at least she didnt cut it off like my mama did me..:rolleyes:..
 
Poor girl. What ever happened to chicks doing their daughters hair? Is it so difficult we have to smack chemicals on them right out of the womb? Five is too young for a relaxer in my opinion.

Heck...I'm gonna invent an in utero kiddie perm.
 
Umm if you can't take care of natural hair b/c of moisture issues good luck with relaxed. :(

Yes she still has hair but the chick was crazy.

I don't have an opinion on the 5 y/o. This is off topic but I'm still mad about the 3 year old whose mother kicked him out of the door way when this woman tried to enter a building.

The poor kid will look like some of these babies I see...Broken and short, Self Esteem issues, and the gammut of trouble.

Lord.....I read somewhere that the Scalp and Skull Do not fuse until age 13, so chems are an Unwise choice for a child.

Exactly, a relaxer isn't going to help that. She should have taken care of the moisture issues.

I don't wanna jack the thread, but I was on another board and this girl made a thread about it. She was on her way to her doctor or something and the mother was screaming at him. A man said it doesn't help to yell and she cursed him out. Poor kid.

Back on topic, hopefully the mother will find someone to properly care for the hair. Nothing I hate more than to see a chewed up head on a tot
 
If the mother knew how to take care of the childs hair before a relaxer or was taking her to a professional to get her hair done, then I don't see any problem with her relaxing a 5 year old. As long as precautions were taken to protect the childs scalp and make sure her hair didn't become damaged, then it shouldn't be a problem. If not, then I feel sorry for the child.

Here's the back story. My daughter and her oldest are 3 months apart. Her daughter is really light with gray/blueish eyes, my daughter brown skin with big dark brown eyes

My daughter had super curly hair as an infant up until like 2 years old then her hair type started to change a little. When they were infants, we would walk through the mall and people would flock to my cousins daughter. You know how "we" get when we see a black baby with colored eyes, lol. Well she always kept a hat on her head and everytime people came to ooh and ahh, they'd lift up the hat and say "OH" then place it back down gently. I believe she was embarrassed of her daughter's hair type. Really tight coils, she called it buck shot beady beads :naughty:

She said she couldn't have her baby walking around looking like that

I must say I am saddened by the Bunny fact. I will have my own personal memorial for him.:look:
My Grandpa raised Bunnies. I did not get attached.... for this very reason....:sad:
 
I don't think 5 is too young as long as the mother knows what she is doing i.e. stretching and moisture/protein balance. IMO, the problem is the fact that the mother could not take care of her daughter's natural hair and thought giving her a relaxer would make things better...NOT. I hope the mother learns how to care for her daughter's relaxed hair soon.
 
HEY that child used to be me ok mommy started around 6 as i can remember but it may have been 5 trying to remember kindergarden here so yeah. but im learning how to take care of my own hair now for the record my mom had no idea what she was doing cuz she was the baby and everyone else did her hair ok.
