What do you use to define your natural 4a type hair?

I don't. Everything that will really make my curls pop, make my hair feel like crap.

But to answer the question, lots of water, heavy butter (shea or whatever,) gel and a blow dryer with a diffuser to dry it so that it hangs lower.

I tried to stop being a gel freak and used conditioner and water. It worked marvels for my hair and now if I use gel it is only a little bit. My hair is now soft thanks to this info.

I do the same except I use Pantene Hydrating Curls. If I want tight curls and my hair to look shorter than what it already does then I use my Denman.

Ladies, I have a question for you. Does your 4a hair curl or does it only wave? I only have 4a in the front (forehead area). The rest of my hair spiral curls, the front has waves.

Oh and I use water, conditioner, eco styler gel and castor oil.

I use 2 different methods, it depends on if I want a soft or firm curl.

If I want a softer curl I use a daily or moisturizing conditioner. Tresemme is fine, whatever you choose is up to you of course. I section my hair, and fingercomb the conditioner in. Squeeze out the condtioner with my fingers.

For a firmer curl. I use EVOO or, a leave-in conditioner or a hair lotion. Section hair off and fingercomb with whatever I chose. Then I use Eco-Styler Gel (clear), hair still in sections and fingercomb gel in.

I have used these methods for 13 to 14 years now.

I now rotate between Hairveda's Whipped Gelly (friggin awesome!) when I want to do a shake and go, and Curls by Sisters Smith Wet Set Hair Pudding (when I want to define my curls, but not look like I have a jheri curl).

Its fairly cheap http://curlsbysisterssmith.com/moisturizers.aspx I'm dying to try it, but I want to try my Hairveda products first. If I buy too many products at once I get confused as to which one gave me the better hair day.
