I'm not impressed by Kinky Curly....

In hair purgatory
Well i tried kinky curly a few times now. i tried it on my texturized hair and it made it feel extra dry(and i used various leave ins) and slimy and i had poor curl definition(my hair looked wavy).I usually washed it out immediately after applying it. I used about half the jar before i realized this is doing nothing for my texturized hair.:swearing: so after cutting my hair i decided to use it on a natural portion of my hair. well the curl was wavy upon application and looked very smooth. after completely drying it made a small coil. What the :censored: !I get the same results with a gel thats 99 cents:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: i feel like ive wasted my money.

when i bought it i was under the impression that is wasn't even a gel so i was pissed when i tried to use VO5 conditioner as a leave in. I was pissed again when i could not even slick back my hair with this stuff. it makes my hair BEYOND flat(no waves but not straight and slick) and zero hold. So far im not seeing any pros other then its natural ingredients and nice smell.(and i dont really care about the naturalness of a product and the smell doesn't linger)

please tell me why this gel is so hyped.

I've never used the gel, but I'd read that if you apply too much product it will come out crunchy/greasy.

I also read that it works better with freshly washed hair and then adding Knot Today. I was actually thinking of buying KCCC on Friday but now I'm like hmmm I dunno.

I don't know if I have this product (I've bought a few "curl definition puddings" but as I shared before, creams aren't my cup of tea so it's buried somewhere if I have it. A good friend sends me samples too so maybe it's a sample I have.)

Anyway, it's hard to know if the product is working if you're using "various leave-ins". I think we sometimes make the mistake of combining things that might not agree and so cancel out each other's positive effects. Do the directions say to use with other products? Sometimes less is more.

i used various leave ins as an attempt to cancel out the drying effect of the KCC on my texturized hair. it was futile. they said to use it with knot today but i wasnt willing to spend more money on the line. on my natural hair though i just need a little infusium 23 and gel doesnt make my hair hard.

Does Infusium 23 make your hair soft, or you use it for strength? I haven't used it in a long time (just the conditioner) but I was under the impression it had protein. Could that have reacted badly with KCC?

I hope someone who uses it can come and share what they use it with. I'm gonna ask my friend whom I suspect may have sent it to me, what she thinks of it. I'll be back to share what she says or suggests. It'd be a shame to have to throw it away, but if it doesn't work...oh well.

But let me see what I can find out.

I didn't like it either. I felt like it made my hair shrink up even more and it had a weird consistency that I didn't like.

I use it on my daughters hair and it works fine. It does leave a residue. If gel works better for you, than I would not reccomend buying it.

I looked up the ingredients and wondered what was potassium sorbate and pectic.
Potassium sorbate is a potassium salt used especially as a food preservative and pectic is a water insoluble acid, meaning it will not dissolve in water. The other ingredients were natural but when you mix natural with the wrong stuff disasters can happen. Oh well...never tried the stuff and won't.

the 'knot today' was no better than infusium (i figure they are interchangeable and would not use both at the same time) and the curly custard was sticky and had a smell that grossed me out. I do use the 'transitioners tonic' and i like it. Im sure someone can make a homemade batch thats comparable but i rather buy it already made and i have yet to find a place that sells liquid MSM (which the tonic has).

Here are some suggestions I got for how to use KCCC. (Turns out it's a trial and error thing--no wonder I'm a no-product lazy bum. I couldn't deal with experimentation and the repeated disappointments if I didn't nail the right thing the first time. It'd be too much like stressful work :perplexed):

    • Cantu shea butter then meringue pie then KCCC
    • Giovanni Direct mixed with a little coconut milk, then KCCC
    • JML leave in (?) but do not use a lot of oil under KCCC
    • Knot Today under KCCC prevents crunchy hair from resulting
    • VO5 Strawberries and Cream under KCCC but use VERY little KCCC
    • CW w/ VO5, condition with Nature's Gate + Honey, use The Conditioner leave-in (?), spray ends with S Curl and apply KCCC very sparingly = soft, no frizz hair
    • Blended Beauty Light Styling Lotion with a blob of BBD Stretch added (lotion-y leave-ins are best eg Giovanni Direct, Elucence MB, watered down Sheamoisture, Kids Organics Shea Butter, etc), then very little KCCC

I actually like the KNot Today it works well at smoothing the cuticle of the hair so it is great for airdrying. I don't know that it works much better than Giovanni Direct w/a little oil added to it though. But the custard was a definite no-go. I think it might work better on type 3 hair.

I completely understand your frustration. It took alot of trial and error using Kinky Curly. In fact, I just started using it again after a jar sat underneath my sink for a few months. This is my regimen:

1. Con wash hair
2. Rinse thoroughly
3. Apply custard (not alot!):lachen:
4. Apply oil (I used olive)
5. Pull back in pony tail
6. Air dry

This worked great! I've been swimming a few times a week and this has kept my hair from breaking and still looking nice. :yep:

If you have Knot Today you can use it before the custard, but not necessary.

girl don't feel bad. I bought the stuff along with the knot today and the pomade and it did absolutely nothing for my hair. I ended up giving the products to my sorority sister.

I was thinking of trying this at some point. Hmm, maybe not!

You hair is similar to mine and I can attest that it was a complete disaster. There was so much product in my hair it was ridiculous. We won't even discuss how it felt in parts of my hair that actually did dry up.

KCCC may work for some textures but it did not work for mine, I even let a lady with hair that was not as thick as mine purchase the remainder and she had the same results.

Folks are right this is like a serious experimentation for which I have no patience or money.

Thanks for the review. Yeah, if I had to guess I would have guessed it might work better on less dense hair. But a disaster for her, too, huh? Did you do it like this method here:

I leave her messages and she replies and she seems willing to bet big bucks that it would work for me. But I am HIGHLY skeptical.

Napp, did you do it like this? If you don't want it, I'm sure you can give it away. You might just wanna keep it in case you discover later that there's something you want to tweak. I bought the Knot Today to use as a detangler and was not impressed, so I gave it away in a product swap. Now I wish I had kept it so I could try other things with it.

I was not in the shower but my hair was soaking wet. Now I noticed on this youtube she says that she has 4B hair in one spot in the back of her head and the rest based on what she says is 4A.

Well I have 90-95% 4B seriously cotton type hair as you well know, so in order to get even 1/4 of those curls, I had to pack on the product.

I felt the same way about KCCC at first. I thought it was drying and that it dried hard and crunchy. I finally found the right leave ins and the right amount for my hair. Also I was expecting my hair to be do something that it's never going to do, be less bulky. Once I stopped trying to use so much and a LOT of leave in, I loved it. It's one of my staples.

Sorry it did not work for you. I just tried it for the first time yesterday and it gave zing to my z pattern. Also, I went out with my friends last night and slept ferociously on my hair. All I had to do the next day was fluff.

I like KCCC.

after trying it on my fully natural hair ive decided i do not like it by itself. it is not heavy enough to control my hair even if i pack it on. so i use a dab of it when i apply my regular 99cent gel because i like how its slippery when i apply. i can glide my fingers through my hair easily only when i mix them because my cheap gel is very thick . and the lady in the video is NOT A 4B imo

Aw, Napp, sorry you didn't like KCCC. I don't use a lot and it it the best curl def gel I've ever brought. I guess it works for some and not all.

I agree that the KCCC works best as you say here.

I like it on my 4a/b fine, thin, but dense head of hair. And w/a mist of water, I can have decent second-day hair with the KCCC/Knot Today.

KCCC seems a bit "gentler" than the Fantasia IC gel. I still use Fantasia for laying the hair but the KCCC is good for curl definition.

I have had success with KCCC and Knot today. I do not get the cruchy dry hair others mentioned. I do find it helpful to add H20 to my hair while only applying a small amount. It does not prevent shrinkage, but I am able to get 3-4 days by misting with water (or humidity from the shower) and fluffing with my fingers.

Sometimes I just use Knot Today and apply a small amount of KCCC to my canopy and the outer perimeter because i do not like waiting for my hair to dry.

I think 4b will not get curly curls with KCCC. I think you will get waves. This happened to a friend of mine who tried it. I'm not sure if I'm right about the waves. It's word of mouth I'm going by.
