Naturals-- Ever considered barrettes?

My cousin, who had near MBL hair as a natural teen, joined me on this LHCF hair journey. She had some damage from a perm and is starting all over, this time with a clear eye on what is good/bad for her hair.

She realizes that when her mom put the ends her braids into little girl barrettes. They were well oiled and wrapped tightly around the plastic barrette. "Protective styling!"

I tried it the other day with a clip and it kept my ends not only tangle and KNOT free, but with a cute little curl at the end.

I'm in kinky twists right now and will be weaved up until Christmas, but once my hair's out I plan on doing this and treating my hair like I would treat my daughter's hair.

Would YOU consider or do you already use barrettes on your ends? Not to go out, of course! But at night?

i do this with my daughter's hair, i was wondering did it lead to breakage...erplexed, but her hair is waistlength, so maybe not...i guess i've been doing a few things right after all!

I don't know, but it might be made to work even for day wear. You could use the click clack type barrettes with something slightly more adult and pin your hair around in a bun or updo against your head, but still wrap your ends around the barrette. Just after wrapping the ends around the barrette, pin it to your head. Maybe use something like this:

Or if you need multiple braids. You know, put your hair in a ponytail and braid 4 braids from the ponytail. Wrap the ends of each around one of these:

and then wrap the braids around the ponytail to form a circle of flowers around the bun. Would be cute.

I'm so glad you said for night wear only, lol. I was like, is this serious? Anyway, you know, that might be a really good idea. My mom is really gonna think I've lost it with this hair stuff when I come over to rifle through all our old little girl hair tins.

I just had a flashback of running on the playground and feeling those damn things slapping me on the back. I don't think I'll be purchasing these anytime soon, but thanks for bring back the memories.

I don't think barrettes lead to breakage. I wore them all the time when I was a little girl and I had longish hair, probably around APL or so by the time I reached 8 or 9 (I think my hair was relaxed at this time). I had a love hate relationship with them. I remember if I turned really fast those dang on things would hit me in the eye or face, but if one fell out I had to find it and make sure I put it back on my ends. Wow, this really brings back memories .

I didn't even wear them as a kid because my granny thought it lead to breakage and my tomboy a$$ would lose them anyway...

I use black ones, and fasten the balls underneath my ponytail so they are not visible. I would definitely try putting a black kiddie barrette on my ends and then rolling up the ponytail/pincurl and pinning it so the barrette is not visible.

I kinda already do this with bobby pins at night. I apply Dabur Amla and braid. I loop/slightly pin curl my ends with the bobby pin and attach it the top of my had. Then I put on my scarf for the night. So far so good my ends have been responding well.

Sheeit I need to get some because when I tried putting those twists in my hair it wouldnt stay for NOTHIN I'm like dang I need some barettes the rubberbands was not what's up.

See, the idea to put them on the ends and then hide the barrette in some manner is smart... :scratchch I tried bunning my not pulling my hair all the way through the ponytail holder on the last pass, but my ends got chewed up with the quickness. If I used the barrette, it might protect the ends better...

This thread has me seriously thinking about raiding DD's barrette stash! She would be ready to fight, too!
