Today, I went for a consultation at Underwraps and was told that I had spacey scalp. Ladies, I have never heard of this before. The way it was explained to me is that I have sparse areas where there is no hair, or few hairs, covering my scalp. This is news to me b/c I have never been told this by my dermatologist, former stylists, or even seen this myself. She stated that I had hereditary baldness in my family line somewhere. This is news to me too b/c not one female in my family has suffered from heredirary baldness. In fact, I am the only one in my family with short hair.

Ladies clue me in b/c I am lost.

Was she trying to sell you something? If so, maybe she's full of it. I've never heard of that either, but it makes sense as far as "space" as in space between each hair. Hmmmmmm, sounds shady to me, but then I'm crazy like that.

Yes I've heard of spacey scalp, it's not bullish and it's not new. Whats underwraps and what do they sell? Is there some benefit to them telling you that that makes you skeptical? Did they try to sell you something?

She wasn't and it got me to thinking if what she was saying had any validity to it.

Did she advise against the chemicals because of this "spacey scalp"?

Actually no, she just made that statement and that was it. She asked if I had ever had any problems with relaxers, or chemicals, in the past and I told her no and she said oh, okay you will be fine then.

ITA with this whole post. But then again, on second thought, "spacey scalp" comes to mind when one is just starting out doing twists. You know how some scalp is showing when you're parting, and as it grows, less scalp shows. But if that's a salon consultation thingy, I haven't a clue what it can mean.

Hmmmm, your "spacey scalp" sounds a lot like my "thinning crown" problem. Anywho, Stress can very well cause the same problem, problem is that the thinning won't show up till 3-6 months later.

Spacey scalp sounds like thin hair, to me. We all have different densities of hair in different sections on our head. Having 'thick' hair might mean that you have thick strands, or that you have a LOT of fine strands. Having 'thin' hair might mean that you don't have a lot of strands, or that your strands are very fine.
So, her 'spacey scalp' might just be 'less than super dense' hair.....

I always thought "spacey scalp" could be caused by parting your hair too much in the same spot. I didn't know it really had a name. Maybe I misred the OP. I know a lot of women who part their hair a lot in one spot lose hair in that spot and it's recommended that you switch up your parts because of that. I also think there were people on this board who complain about a "spacey scalp" from rollersetting too much.

Uh yeah, it just sounds like thin hair to me too. Maybe she thinks "spacey scalp" sounds better/less alarming/whatever. My scalp is "spacey" alright because the hair that used to cover it has largely fallen out for whatever reason. The thinning may be localized or diffuse, but the bottom line is there just isn't much hair on, hence the space between hairs.

My mom basically said the same thing to me after seeing a pic of my parted new growth. She suffers from alopecia.. as did her mother. She told me that it was a sign that I may have alopecia as I get older. I'm not sure how acurate she is.. but I'm hoping its not true. :nono:

Oh.. you can see the pic in my siggy. HTH.

So spacey scalp is actually a term. I've seen people with big parts, where you see more scalp but they don't necessarily have thin hair. In fact I see this with ladies who have long thick hair as well.

My parts are relatively small and I have fine hair, although I do have areas where the part is bigger. My sisters have small parts as well and you literally have to hold their hair down to keep the parts open.

I think that this discussion is going to lead us to a discussion on what is thick/thin, dense, etc.

Fine, Medium, Coarse describes the texture of hair. Thick or thin general refers to the density of hair (how much hair in a certain amount of space). All the research I have read says that people with "African" hair have less hair per square inch then other races. I found that kind of surprising (especially cause I have lots of hair). But either way, I think that she meant that your hair is not dense.

This thread is so on time. I had thought about starting a thread asking HOW do girls get those huge spaces when they part thier braids? When I do my braids you can barely see the scalp, but when I look at other girls' styles, there's mad scalp showing.

I've had stylists tell me my hair is very dense and very thick. But they usually say it with a sneer, kindof like I did something wrong. So I wasn't sure how to take that. I guess that's just why my parts aren't as big as other girls. Mystery solved.

Lord, I hope it is not true too.

I know what you mean. I once had a hairdresser who told me that I have 5 hairs growing out of each of my follicles (sp) I don't think that is possible but most people average 2-3 hairs per cluster which is what she was probably talking about. Unless I get a good braider who can braid tight without hurting me then you won;t be able to see my scalp when I get braids. When I used to use the teeth headbands they would disappear into my hair. I have a friend who still uses them and they create visible parts in the front of her hair. It alway amazed both of us.

I have some thinning in the back crown area of my hair. I guess I have "spacey scalp" too.
I think it is stress related and also I like to sleep on my back sometimes. It itches too! Does your "spacey scalp" itch Tishee?

That "spacey scalp" term is :lachen:me up.

Hey sweetie,

It does when it needs to be washed but not any other time. I am going to have to revamp my regimen to wash/cw more often b/c after 3 days my scalp is screaming wash me or else. With the cool weather here and my constant colds, I have neglected to wash as often as I should/need to.

I had just taken some pictures of my hair, and this thread came to mind.

I have fine hair, as does my mother, and her's is thinning, especially in the crown area. Anyways.. I think I have a spacey scalp, although I had never heard of the term before, take a look at my picture! This is just been washed and twisted before air drying.

My hair type is 4a, I think, and I am using castor oil in an attempt to thicken it up, although I am on the MoeGro Challenge, I will see how it goes, or should I go back to MT?

I have one area in my head that looks exactly like your mom's scalp. Does the castor oil appear to be working to thicken it up at all?

I believe my hair has thickened, it actually looks a lot thicker when it's dry, but it is still not very dense, yet. When you look closer I have lots of short hairs all over my scalp, in between the hairs, if you can picture it, so it is definately thickening. I just have to wait for the 'infill' hairs to catch up!!

I have this, too. I have a bottle of JBCO upstairs and will start using it to see if it works for me.

This is what I thought of when you mentioned "spacey scalp"....if that is the case I have it too but MT and OCT is helping me tremendously! :yep:

If your were losing hair, the crown of your head would be thinning, only men lose around the hairline area. I think that women with curly hair, whenever they cut their hair really short, it seems like their scalp is showing more.

i actually get what they mean about a 'spacey scalp'. Like when people with really thick hair part their hair, you only see small area of the scalp, while others with finer hair I'd usually say they have bigger gap in the part. Lol i doubt it's anything serious when the name of the 'condition' is spacey scalp lol doesn't too professional and legit to me.

good point and now that I think of it I completely agree.
