... a hair stylist gives you an unsolicited flyer or business card to advertise their services? For example, if you are at the local Wal-Mart and they walk up to you and hand you a card? That happened to me the other day and I don't know whether I should be offended or not! I had my hair braided up the way I normally wear it under my wig. Since I was just going to Wal-Mart I left the wig at home. I think it's annoying to me when stylists do this. It makes me feel like they are trying to say something without coming right out and saying it...

I didn't want to go THERE, but the stylist that handed me the card had her hair in some micros, and they didn't exactly look fresh.

Their hair looks so crazy. Most likey people who do hand out those cards are hair stylist not hairdressers. To me hair stylist know how to stlye hair and a hairdresser kows how to make and keep it healthy. To answer the question I could care less. I know how my hair is being treated lol

In NY I remember riding in a car and I looked to the left and some woman was making braiding motions at her scalp and pointing at me, her way of inviting me in to get my hair braided. I guess you have to advertise somehow.

It's helpful....I found a good African braider for my dd that way...I didn't find it offensive...she was handing them out to every black person that she saw and right on time too.. I took my dd to her shop the next day

As far as whether or not to be insulted, I wondered the same thing the first couple of times. Now I just see it as one more sales method. They've gotta make a living too.

But as far as how I feel about the method? Not a fan. If I need something, I'll find you.

That's what I would say too, it's not personal- they're just trying to advertise their business.

it doesn't bother me at all. that is how they get new clients. how else is anyone going to know about the services that they provide. when i become a makeup artist, i going to pass out business cards too. now if you get offended by it then that is something personal going on with you. i don't care what you look like, i just need to make some money!

normally i dont mind because they hand it out to everybody but recently i was walking down a big street and saw some woman staring at me. i thought it was nothing and kept on moving. then i noticed some one was following me and i turned around and she went "miss" and handed me a card for braids and kinky twists.That really rubbed me the wrong way because there were tons of jacked up heads and weaves passing by her but she singled me out(oh and i had my kinkytwists that i did myself in at the time)

If they're passing it out to everyone in the vicinity, then no, I don't mind at all.

My problem is when they come up to me and say something like "Girl, I could really hook you up. You NEED to come see me" or "You should let me do something to that head, let me write down my number for you", all said with a stank look and trying to touch my hair. That's just RUDE. And it's happened to me more than once. I do not find it helpful, I find it offensive.

This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about! I never see stylists handing out cards/flyers to everyone. Whenever it happens to me it's like they bypass everyone else and give one to ME. That's what I have a problem with. I would understand if they were passing the flyers out to everyone, but it seems like they often pick and choose whose hair looks the worse IMO and then give the flyer to them.

If it was something where everyone in my vicinity received a flyer/business card I wouldn't have a problem. But I wouldn't consider it to be JUST advertising if you're only picking and choosing who to pass out flyers/cards to.

I put other because it depends on how they approach. They have to be out going to get new business but they should be professional in there approach. They should look good themselves and they should introduce themselves and say they work at this salon and that they are trying to get the word out.

I have had a person come up to me and say that I really needed my hair done! I admit that I wasn't looking my best that day but that is just plain rude!

But I must give some room for people who work for themselves because my husband works for himself (not in hair) and he has to be a go getter or forget it. There is no steady paycheck if you don't make it happen, but you must be professional.

Well, look at it this way. She saw that you already wear kinky twists. So you like them. so you might get them done again in the future. Possibly by her.
You are her target market.

I was just going to post the "fried and laid to the side" thing after reading the first part of your post, but you said it. Many hairstylists don't think your hair is done unless it looks processed and manipulated to the maximum. Why? Because that gives them more work to do.

I'm not bothered by it and I've had it happen to me before, especially if I have my hair "bushed out." I normally get the ones that hand me their business card while they're staring at my hair. They can't even look me in the eye to get my business? Pshaw to that. So before they walk away, I give them their card back. I'm going to end up throwing it away anyway and it'd be better for them to give it to someone else who might keep it.

eh--I can't think of a time I've ever been offended because they're usually staring at my hair and commenting on its thickness, etc--usually I just take it without comment. I feel bad telling the truth: I don't go to stylists ever. Now, when other people are trying to pass on their stylist's flyer/card, I get a little irritated--their hair IS their stylist's advertisment and 99% of the time it is NOT a good one.

I've been handed a card by a braider. I assumed she just wanted my business coz she saw me in braids and figured I could be a customer. I find it to be a bit annoying! Mind you I'm used to having my hair styled, and looking good on most days. But I've been approached several times when I was just looking "regular". These chicks are beasts!! Nobody asked youuu for help..Fall back!!!

I have some off days when my hair isn't looking as nice, but for the most part I do my on hair, and there have been times that I have shown up to a hair salon looking better than when I left the hair salon. Sometimes those people that hand out that business cards inviting you to their salon , have hair that really doesn't look any better than yours.

I think what they see is just an opportunity to make money off you. I have had stylist do this as well as Mary Kay reps.

I was in the library one day and this lady came up to me whispering about how pretty my skin was. I thought she was just giving me a compliment, then she hands me her Mary Kay card. She goes on to tell me that she would love to do a make over on me. WTH....

So I later took it to mean that she saw my skin as a platform to say look how Mary Kay made her look and she could then get other women to buy the makeup.

Kind of like when you see ads in magazines for hair aids, or miracle growth serums or just new and improved relaxers and you know damn well the model already had naturally long or naturally curly hair. But the ad would have you think their product did it.

It could be that or the fact that she was a braider and could see you wore braids. Therefore you might be willing to pay her to do it.

I don't know why folks would think they are being singled out either. Think that's an internal thing. If I am a hairstylist and i see someone with hair PERIOD, then you are a client candidate.

If i am in the car washing business and i see you unlocking your CAR, then i'mma give u my card cause you are a client candidate.

I agree like I said before but there is a professional way to approach someone and a rude way. For a hair salon everyone should be a candidate even if there hair looks great I would think.
