so..:spinning:

my sister is in advertising.. and her current assignment is to work on the walgreens hair care aisle................... and her task is to re-organize the categories

by

wavy
straight
repair
etc.............

and was told to come up with a name for the black hair care section...
u know. other than...
ethnic
kinky
coarse
relaxed
................
what does the ladies of LHCF think is most respectful and best descriptive of our hair section...

Hmmm, that's a good question. I've always accepted the 'ethnic' haircare section because I knew that's where I needed to go! What if they broke it down the way we do here: natural and relaxed? I mean, non-ethnic people don't refer to their hair this way right? So I think if they had those sections it would be easy for us to find what we needed, even though we use a lot of the same things, it still might help.

I really do understand why they want to replace the term "ethnic". I mean, everyone has an ethnicity, white people included. So using ethnic in place of black isn't really getting it.

I don't have any suggestions as to what is should be replaced with.

I work at CVS and our section is ethnic hair care too. White people dont consider themselves ethnic so I guess that why it always work:lachen:

I like that to but that can apply to white people too...I was gonna say textured but again it can work for both...

And I kinda like that fact. Stuff that is marketed to black folks can work for white folks, and stuff marketed to white folks can work for black folks. I'd like to see the sections divided up by your HAIR, and not by the color of the scalp under it, is all I'm saying.

I like textured too....thats good.

Then from there she can go to relaxed and natural products related products, then just all the products for your "textured" hair in general.

Companies make things so hard when they try to tailor their products to fit a race, instead of hair type. Curly, Straight, Textured, relaxed, natural....wouldn't be easier if the whole hair care section was broken down like that? What's the difference between CON and HH anyways?

I also agree that the distinction/separation of haircare products geared towards people of color needs to be reexamined because hair comes in a variety of textures and really is not exclusive to one race. I have seen women and men who don't look and may not be "ethnic" with 3C/4A hair.

I would feel more comfortable in a haircare product aisle or section classified by "Chemically Treated" and "Textured". "Chemically Treated" would encompass permed, relaxed/straightened and colored hair, while "Textured" would cover all those with curly hair in various degrees and thickness. That's what I would like to see.

chemically relaxed as one section and coarse/curly for the other section. We're not the only people with coarse/kinky hair and certainly not the only race who relaxes.

I'm gonna go with "Hair Care" for the daily double. I am sick of teh word "ethnic" being correlated with color.

Minds well have a sign that says "Darkies' products here!"

I like "textured" best, too. Or "highly textured". After that, maybe "curly". Though I'm sure the message would get across eventually, I think there might initially be a number of black people who don't recognize the term "curly" as applying to their hair. Namely the folks whose hair gets called "nappy", since before the hair boards I used the term "curly" essentially for type 3s. Hmm, come to think of it, then, maybe in fact "natural" would be the best. But then that might confuse straight hair types whose hair is natural. Wow, this is harder than I thought . . .

No matter what they do, someone will catch feelings and get upset.

I could care less what they rename it to as long as its politically correct.

I agree with "Textured" because it applies to all of us: curly, kinky, texturized, or relaxed.

i dont think textured is a good name. doesnt everyone have a texture? i mean we know what it means but.....

i think relaxed and natural is the best term. because anyone can be textured, or be chemically and color treated so whats left?

i know, but that's what makes it so hard. everyone can be natural, too, including straight hair types.

as long as they don't call it African or African-American hair care. I, too, think it's better to go by a description of the hair. that's why i liked "highly textured" since that's a mainstream term for "curly" or "very curly". But funny enough, as long as the products themselves don't get mixed around and are sorted like they are right now, people will still soon come to see it as the black hair care isle.

i just had a hilarious thought, with the whole store divided that way. there could be an AA snack aisle and then the default one. and ours could be full of over-salted over-sugary stuff that has pictures of shockingly healthy-looking black people on the front of them, just like our hair care isle is full of petroleum and burn-your-head-off chemicals with people with shockingly healthy-looking hair on the box. :lachen:

How about just mix it all together considering most of the items that are designed for 'ethnics' aren't good for us anyway. I tend to use 'nonethnic', curly haired products. Too much petroleum and mineral oil in that aisle.

What about the feminine hygiene ethnic aisle or the cleaning product ethnic aisle. Toilet paper, pain medication...

Why can't they mix them all together? Why do we need our own section? They can put them right in with the other products and put the relaxers and other chemical kits over by the hair color kits and stuff. I can't think of any other name besides chemically straightened/natural.
