i cant remember but i think i read somewhere that propylene glycol is just another name for mineral oil is this true or am i mixing things up in my mind?

It's the "less toxic version" pf ANTIFREEZE.:nono:

For some reason afro-hair curls up REALLY nicely when you put tons of it in a product. :lachen: It's one of three chemicals I actually avoid and I'm a cone-queen.

Basically if you drink THIS kind of antifreeze you'll "almost die" not actually die. As in...you'll WISH you were dead but it won't truly poison you.

IT IS USED IN CARS. :wallbash:

Propylene glycol is a derivative of petroleum (petrolatum)

I used to get mineral oil (paraffinium liquidinum) and petroleum (petrolatum) confused, but they're pretty much the same I guess.

Seems like it is used everywhere, not just in haircare products (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol)

Propylene glycol is used:

propylene glycol. Along with other glycols and glycerol, this is a humectant or humidifying and delivery ingredient used in cosmetics

It is a derivative of petroleum, however... the two substances are VERY different. They do not share many similarities.

Monopropylene glycol is produced by reacting propylene oxide with water. Propylene oxide is the petrochemical (derived from petroleum or natural gas).

I got my info from that link.

I avoid this ingredient, but not very strictly. It doesn't cause build up like petroleum. It's in A LOT of things... it's pretty much impossible to escape it. It's even used in the food industry.

It's up to you whether to use it or not.

My personal motto is yea, it's good to limit your exposure to harmful chemicals, but think about the air you're breathing in, the water you drink, all the common sources of chemicals you are exposed to 24 hours a day. Makes no sense to drive yourself crazy because you can never really eliminate all sources of carcinogens and chemicals that are bad for you.

Yeah, that's why I stopped tripping over ingredients so much. I went all crazy when I read that certain things were harmful and started throwing things out. I don’t believe much of the hype anyway because lots of these pseudoscientific articles are put out by people in the natural health and beauty industry ANYWAY.

I still use some natural things but I’m sure what we use in beauty products is marginal compared to what we are uncontrollably exposed to.

I know. It's not worth stressing over. I am so over thinking a skull and crossbone should go on the front of most products. It's good to be informed, but I'll pray about it and keep it movin'. The fear factor has worked us over many times.

*Runs off to eat a dirt sandwich and sip spring water, 'cause everything else is dangerous, and these seem to be the safest!* :look:
