I know that an important key to growing healthy black hair is not to manipulate it that much, but I just can't help it! Seriously it seems like I'm always putting my hair in buns to protect it, but I never last long before I take it down and start running my fingers through my hair, playing in it, and wreaking all sorts of havoc :whyme: I also comb it too much. Everytime I take it down I get the urge to comb it. I didn't think twice about what I was doing to my hair until I got my relaxer on September 1st. By my calculations I should have been BSL, but instead I'm about an inch or two above it :perplexed. I feel it has a lot to do with me manipulating my hair more than I should. I'm going to try really hard to not torture my hair so much and protect it more :yep:. I guess this is a sort of confessional for me, and I was just wondering if any of you ladies are or were guilty of bad hair habits that you've found very hard to break. It feels good to get it off your chest, lol.

You're not alone, *Muffin*! I keep wetting and brushing my hair just so I can feel it falling down my back:look:. When it's dry and the curls come in I keep messing with them, too! It's a compulsion, I tell ya:nono: I just know I'm gonna lose any progress I've been making if I don't stop it...already getting more and more broken hairs. I need a 12-step for my HIH (hand in hair) disease:wallbash:

My name is november wind and I have HIH disease.

Me too! If I see any crimps and curls in my hair from wearing it in a bun I have to comb it out, and if my ends look puffy (probably from excessive combing) I have to spray it down and comb it some more. I also get the urge to wash it obsessively just so it looks longer. IDK, I think I need to be in that 12-step program right along with you, girl.

 Nope ya'll are not alone....I've been here since Feb 2006 and I *still* haven't reached APL for that very same reason. :wallbash:

Hey EMJazzy, welcome to the HIH club:grin:. Right now I have a plastic cap on my head, attempting to keep my hands off. I just know that it's gonna come off soon (I'm missing my curls, yall)

Girl you are not the only one :nono: I plan on wearing my hair in a bun this whole fall and winter to reach BSL by December and MBL not too long after that . Wearing protective styles can be boring especially when I see someone else's hair down and bouncing :ohwell:. But girl think of the progress and goal you are trying reach, if you want to wear your hair down then wear your hair down :yep:. There are lots of ladies that have wonderful hair and are successful with wearing their hair down.

Something has to be done about this madness. We should all band together and contrive a way for us to stop manipulating our hair. I'm going to pick a way to wear my hair throughout the day and not comb or groom it AT ALL. The only exceptions being when I moisturize my hair in the morning and/or at night and when I wash my hair. And when I'm at home just bumming it I'm going to try to keep my hair covered with a silk scarf or put it in a bun or something. I'll wear it down only occasionally.

I feel you. I'm not afraid to wear my hair down if I want to, it's just that I know I have a bad habit of excessively touching and combing my hair. I just want to train my hands to not comb or groom my hair so much. It's nice to know I'm not the only one :)

Yeah I have HIAD (Hair In Afro Disease). I twirl the left side of my hair obsessively. I also touch my curls no matter where I am. Even in meetings! Its horrible. I need help LOL
