In Need of Some Opinions..

I would just post this in the WL End of Sept Challenge page, however, I am need of faster responses in order to make a certain decision.

To trim or not to trim?

Keep in mind:

-I am trying to reach WL by the end of this year with my avg growth being .5 or so each month

-I really don't have a trusted person to trim my hair. Never really have. I have suffered a few setbacks. (I would be going to a new salon tomorrow if I decide to get the trim)

-These are recent pics of an OLD press with lots of new growth hiding there.

-I plan on protective styling from Oct- Dec. with braids, etc.

It depends.

If your ends are damaged... trim!

If your ends are healthy, don't trim!

You can't always tell thin ends that just may need a little time to grow and thicken up from damaged ends in pics, but you know your hair!

Thanks Neith!! I honestly can say that I have a few splits but I really wouldn't consider my ends to be damaged.

Thanks so much Neith! I wanted to dust my ends and keep it moving onto protective styling then wait for december for a real trim but everyone around me is telling me I need a trim desperately now.

I really needed the honest opinions of my ladies in this forum before I make any major decisions....

any other opinions out there????

If they are not damaged, I would stick to your plan of dusting and protective styling.

If you have just a few splits, then I suggest that you do a light dusting. If you don't have any serious split ends or breakage, I wouldn't worry about it. Just my opinion.

Why Trim?
In my opinion, you're going to be hiding your hair anyway for the next 4 months with protective styling.
When you take your hair out at that point, you'll probably feel the need to trim at that point anyway.

Why not just wait, braid up your hair, and trim one time at the end of the year?


Anyway, many people growing their hair long don't even bother trimming, or they trim their hair once a year. If your hair is healthy, and you maintain it, you have nothing to worry about.

Stop listening to others around you, and listen to your hair instead.

I would trim the individual splits, but I wouldn't get an actual trim. to me, it doesn't look that bad. I think you should wait till your an inch past your goal, sinch your almost there, and then get a good trim to even up.

yea i would suggest dusting the individual hairs.

no need to go to a stylist and trim tho if you really want waistlength this year,

@ bold: no, you don't imo erplexed. your ends look fine in the picture. they don't actually look very thin or scraggly. of course, that's not to say one can tell from a picture alone the condition of a person's hair but you've said you only have a few split ends. it's important to get rid of them, so just continue to dust.

i don't think an actual trim is desperately in order based on what you've said and the pics.

Protective styling with braids until the end of the year? No I would not trim. Besides its harder to blend blunt-cut ends in the synthetic hair (if you are using). Trusting a new stylist? No I would not trim until my goal is reached.

You are right about the whole trusting a new stylist thing Frizzy. I really shouldn't do that at a time like this.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Everyone around me is hounding me to trim my hair and when I tell them I am trying to get to WL by the end of the year, my cousin laughed and said I could spare a few inches. And I honestly feel like I am not satisfied with my length now nor do I regard it as super long despite what everyone says around me. (If they only saw some of the lovely heads full of hair on this site! ) Other people tell me my hair will be in worse condition if I don't trim now before I go on my braiding/protective styling track.

I feel like no one really understands my hair-mania or whatever you want to call it besides you guys.

To them I probably seem like a hair maniac, but I just want to really care for my hair so it can grow to its maximum length and health.

Don't trim until you reach your goal of waist length. Plus, your hair doesn't look like it needs a trim.
