After reading through numerous posts, it seems that many of you ladies use Coconut oil and milk, castor oil (eeh my mom used to make me drink a spoonful everyday as a child!!), jojoba oil, and so on.

I'm confused at what each one does and which ones you need, or maybe you need them all?

Where do you buy them also? (I'm in Japan and a lot of ethnic hair products I have to order online or get my mom to send them over.) I did see a can of coconut milk at my local supermarket but it was nearly $5!!!!

I wanna make sure I'm getting the right oils and milks before I mess my hair up anymore!
Thanks again ladies!

Hi there!

you dont have to buy these oils at an Ethnic Beauty Supply Store.
You can get most of these oils at regular grocery stores or health food stores. I always find my oils ( Extra virgin Olive oil Grapseed etc...) In the Cooking isle. You dont have to use all of the Oils. Use the oils that fits your needs. I dont know how the Stores are in Japan But i Hope i Helped!

Try camellia oil. It's native to Japan and is of excellent quality. It's similar to jojoba in thickness and how it feels on skin. It has a fairly neutral scent. It's pricey, but probably won't cost as much as to ship something in from the States.

One more small trad Japanese hair tip. Use the water that's boiled off the rice to comb your hair w/. It detangles as well as adds strength.

Thanks to both of you ladies for the advice.

One question: what oils do you use for what? For shampoo or pre-poo, DC, and etc? Do you use coconut milk too?

Just a little curious on that.
Thanks!

I don't do all that pre poo stuff. I simply use oils as hairdressing and not to specifically wash out. I tend to gravitate to coconut (Indian vedic and Monoi de Tahiti) and jojoba. I choose depending on what my hair needs at the mo, mood, and for smell. These plain oils can be used in any all all manners you choose...pre poo, hot oil, mixed w/ conditioners, even for facial masks and the like (in this case camellia and jojoba, not coconut...too heavy) Around here, oils tend to be used to "seal" in whatever moisture you choose to use in your hair dressing.

I have some coconut milk I plan to experiment w/ for a conditioner, but I have nothing to report there yet.

Try the local camellia oil I say, but you can try other oils that might be available in your grocery store like peanut oil or olive (if that's available). If you just want to import something, shea oil is a nice thick oil tho not greasy...it's a more "dry" oil than others w/o the hassle of the butter.

I use Extra Virgin Olive oil To seal My Ends with. When Co-washing i apply it over the Conditioner. I recently ran out of My oils...i havent been to the store yet so im using Canola oil (the kind you cook with) LOL!
Oh yes i prepoo with them also. I haven not tried Coconut milk.

BTW, to make your live easier at LHCF, most of the really complicated regimes are done by naturals. Since you're relaxed/straightened and want to stay that way, most of that stuff would be overkill.

You asked about regimes in another thread....are you close to any Indian/Pakistani/Muslim people in Japan? I knwo there's small pockets here and there...and they bring ayurveda w/ them wherever they go.

umm i dont think the most complicated regi's are done by mostly naturals:ohwell:.
Actually i try to keep it as simple as possible....Alot of Natural and Relaxed heads use oils in many different ways....it really is not that complicated:look:

Perhaps that's you and it's certainly me wrt simplicity, but how many challenges and the like are aimed at the relaxed? Do you think baggying, constant co washing, air drying, finger combers, 8 million oils/butters users, most vedic users, etc are relaxed? If they were, they'd probably be transitioning because their relaxed hair would be jacked due to of all the direct and constant moisture discussed on many threads. The protein levels would kill relaxed hair. Besides, she uses a flat iron on a regular basis and much of what's discussed is anti heat.

I've been a member here 5 years and natural all of those years, so I didn't say what I did as a judgment, but an observation.

Well good luck to you in your hair endeavors. You'll find your regime and products that work for you and your situation....it just takes some time and patience to get it sorted.

Trust me im not trying to start anything by any means....
im natural (for 14 years) and i knw things can get complicated at times thats why u have to work through it. Im living and learning everyday but regardless of what you are (natural or relaxed) its going to take some work new methods and learning on how to care for hair. Trust me im not trying to start anything by any means....yes i do see where you are coming from when said relaxed heads dont have as many challenges. But regardless if you are Natural, Relaxed being a Newbie it can be somewhat of a challenge learning new things..trying out different products etc..
Im just saying i see some relaxed ladies using the same methods as Naturals (Pre-poo Oil Rinsing etc....)
thats all....

I use Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Coconut Oil! I use it to seal my ends and even message my scalp with. They both can be found at a great price from LHCF's very own stinastina: http://stinastina.ecrater.com/

She has the best customer service and is very friendly! HTH!

ive ordered and will be trying JBCO soon for the first time, after that I'm sticking with just Coconut Oil for a while. I'm tired of trying oils , I love Avocado oil too though, Macadamia nut oil smells too bad, I have some walnut oil to try out too, but yeah I'm stickin with just coconut now

almond oil was just okay
jojoba oil didnt impress me
shea oil the same
carrot oil-too orange
olive oil-good but sick of the smell

Yes Olive oil Smells Horrible! LOL

I havent tried Coconut oil yet....i have been eyeing for some time now.

I never heard of oils messing up your hair but it could be possible. I can see overkill. For those that are considering coconut oil I would do it. I love it and it smells great. I go to a health food store and get the virgin coconut oil. Pay about six for it. Olive oil does kinda stink but if you want the benefits of it mix it with the coconut oil. That will even the smell and you will have the benefits of both oils!! Both are suppose to be good for growth, moisture and split ends. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I heard.

Thanks ladies for all the advice! (I want to thank you all personally but I'd have to hit the thanks button 3467362899833 times to do so.)

Anyways...I'm going to check out Coconut oil and Cameilla oil over here...I think they will be easy to find.

Manushka**thanks for the comment! (It's my "kid" from my school...I love kids! I would adopt all 200 of them if I could!!!!)

I use just two oils, coconut oil and evoo to seal. I find that the evoo is a little heavier than the coconut oil. The coconut oil adds lots of shine to my hair when I flat iron and it doesn't weigh it down. I use extra virgin coconut oil that I buy at walmart and one jar lasts me a whole year.

Thanks for that info! I'm going to look into trying those oils when I flat iron and wrap...and maybe a little in a deep conditioner...
Still a newbie at this...why didn't I find this site years ago????!!!!
